Is AI an existential threat to humanity?

My concern about AI is there are so many weak people out there who don’t want to think anyway, so they will become reliant on obtaining all of their knowledge via AI and never have to actually learn anything. At some point there might not be anyone left with the knowledge to program AI. So then we are left with AI going as far as it can go as the only source of intelligence among an idiocracy.
