How come schools

 
Good question, but the answer is because of $. Also, lacrosse was a club sport until this past year, its first as a sanctioned OHSAA varsity sport.
 
The main thing is the money , but most players do it out of the school season unlike football. So it is important for them to have own equipment. When I coached ad a bigger school in Columbus, we did have helmets to pass out if needed.
