Herbstreit to Michigan

I know he will be a preferred walk on. But even if he didn't want to go to osu for whatever reason, why Michigan is the question. My initial thought is the education. I would love to hear others thoughts on why Michigan. This will be entertaining I'm sure. Go Blue!

Kirk is a Buckeye through and through. He and his dad were both Buckeye captains. As a QB, though, Kirk was one of the worst OSU QBs of my lifetime. Not as bad as Bellasari, but not very good…and never beat Michigan.

He’s on scholarship according to Sam Webb.

24/7 only reports what scholarships a given recruits announces so it isn’t always accurate. But he doesn’t have any listed offers. Maybe they offered him as a 2nd QB in the class to help fill out the room and he took it because it’s his only offer.

Very good offer if it is his only one.

Michigan is a fantastic school. This OSU alum has no problem admitting it. Chase is a great kid but a mediocre QB. Michigan did get Ted Hammond last year out of X. Maybe they are playing the long game. I think the scholly limit is 105 now. My understanding is that walk-ons may be a thing of the past. I wish him all the luck in the world.

Herby letting his kid go somewhere that’s getting “the hammer”?

I thought he was full scholarship

Roster limit is 105. Conferences will decide how many scholarships teams get. B10 has not said yet but SEC only conference to announce will keep at 85. If add 20 to football will need to add 20 to women's sports so I expect the B10 to also keep at 85.

Kid is getting hammered on social media- he wasn’t even the 2nd best QB in his league, and there are only 4 teams in the GCL! As a parent, i cant imagine putting your kid in this position to be ridiculed for being a nepo offer, if he thought it was rough getting criticized at X…but good luck!

I don’t ask this to be disrespectful or dismissive, but have any of Kirk’s kids played a meaningful snap in college? I would assume this follows that trend.
I'm not sure any of them have ever been anything but walk ons, and certainly only got on the teams they got on because of their dad. Not that there is anything particularly wrong with that. But I do think one of them got on the kick off team for Clempsen.

I think Zac saw some semi-meaningful snaps as like walkonTE4, ala Pat Gurd this year, that OSU likes to utilize. But no, they did not.

Thanks for the information. Some of the places that I read say that everyone will get some money moving forward (NIL rather than scholly?) but less people on the roster. The title ix thing I had not considered.

You NEVER know about these things. Once upon a time, there was a QB1 from tiny little Rabun County High School, in Tiger, Ga., named GUNNER Stockton. And the only time I saw him play was in the AA quarterfinals, against the Thomasville Bulldogs. (alma mater of ALL Pro William Andrews, and UGA OC Mike Bobo) FAST forward to games end, and the previously undefeated Rabun Co. team had been WHACKED 45-17, by a Bulldog team that had no business shutting down what was projected before the game, to be the record setting night of Stockton and the undefeated Rabun Co. team, as he was projected to set the ALL TIME GHSA passing record, that would never come. And all he got was 150 yds. passing, and a BIG FAT 'L' for his trouble. Fast forward three LOOONG years down the road, and Stockton had not only had to endure two years sitting behind walk on Stetson Bennett IV, but later Five Star Carson Beck. And THEN, in game THIRTEEN of the season, destiny rang it's lonely bell. And Number 14 was called at halftime, to shoulder the burden of assuming the reigns of the Georgia Bulldogs, who had been held to SIXTY yards and three points, the first half. By what was said to be the best defense in the land, the Texas Longhorns. A daunting task, to say the least. And as the seldom used backup walked briskly onto the field, the stadium AND the players ERUPTED. And with a 6-3 deficit, Gunner Stockton was finally given his chance on the biggest stage of his life. And two quarters and one OT later, Travis Etien went up the middle for four yards, and into Georgia Bulldog lore.

I'm not so sure about that. He's always quick to take a shot at OSU fans. Did you see his latest comments that OSU would be better off if they weren't playing at home on 12/21/2024? IMO Kirk is a jerk.

Don't know much about his son. I wish him well!

Not trying to pile on but there were 17 Quarterbacks that made the division 1 All- Ohio list and none of them are named Herstreit or are committed to Michigan. Again- my kids would be embarrassed if daddy got them a job mowing lawns, let alone a “scholarship” to play at a school like Michigan. Not a great life lesson IMHO

His dad could get him on any team, I’m guessing the kid chose Michigan, not his dad.

With the expanded scholarship rosters and a need for bodies in the room, Michigan wasn’t going to get another ranked QB to join Underwood in this class. In a near half decade of dunking on Ohio State, Michigan saw another chance by offering one of the most visible and notable Buckeye alum’s son a scholarship. Seemingly his only one.

My guess is if Chase were a 2024 kid, he’d have been a PWO at Michigan.

Michigan pulled off one of the best PR moves in college football by signing Chase, imo. Signing the son of the most recognizable voice of college football, whose family has a rich tradition with the buckeyes was genius! What else would be the value of burning a scholarship on a mediocre, at best, high school QB? Ohio’s Mr. Football, and Gatorade player of the year who is a four star junior is right up the road and Michigan hasn’t offered him? I’m not a Michigan fan, but hats off to them on this one..

NCAA dictates 85. Some conferences can choose less but not more. That is how it has been for years unless something has changed. Now, unsure what this all means with NIL as I'm sure there are some work arounds.

People are usually pretty shocked to learn these. Outside of high end football and basketball few people get a full ride. Good grades and testing helps programs get creative with academic money to get there or close.

Big changes coming to all D1 sports next year. Rosters for most sports at many schools will be much smaller but if conferences/schools chose there could be more players on scholarship.

Football is far and away the sport with the biggest roster in the NCAA with an average of 128.2 players on each team in 2022-23, and it will be hit hardest with the proposed limit of 105 meaning more than 23 players will lose a spot per team next season.

Let’s explore the changes coming to NCAA D1 sports for the 2025-2026 academic year if the settlement is approved.

  • No Scholarship Cap: NCAA D1 schools will be able to offer scholarships to every athlete on their roster, eliminating previous sport-specific limits. This means schools will have more flexibility in financially supporting their athletes, increasing the number of potential college sports scholarships.
  • New Roster Limits: NCAA is introducing new roster limits that match or exceed current scholarship restrictions for each sport. With scholarship caps gone, most programs will be able to offer more scholarships. However, they must follow the new NCAA roster limits for each sport. For example, NCAA football scholarship limits will have a roster cap of 105 players, up from 85. Keep reading to see the full list of new roster limits for all NCAA D1 sports, including the current and new numbers
  • Scholarship Type: All sports will now be classified as equivalency sports, allowing schools to offer partial scholarships. This is a huge change from the current system where some sports, like football, basketball and volleyball, are headcount sports and only offer full scholarships.
