POTP Whiz of a Whizzer™ Trivia Question(s)
Who was the last Panther to defeat a state champion?
Hint: this wrestler, who plays two other sports at Elder, is one of three brothers to attend Elder.
Bonus questions: (1) When did he do it, and (2) who did he beat?
Your answer(s) need NOT be in the form of a question. Winner receives nothing. Good luck.*
*Current members of the Elder wrestling coaching staff and their immediate families are not eligible to participate. Retired coaches are ok. Void where prohibited.

Joey Thamann his freshman year?

Joey Thamann his freshman year?
Ding! Ding! We have a winner for the main question. Congrats!
Joey Thamann, who not only wrestles but plays football and baseball and of course is the brother of Tommy and Andrew, indeed is the last Panther to defeat a state champion.
To get credit for the two bonus questions, you must be specific.
Hint: It wasn't during his freshman year.

Bendure, Mason kid. Not Ohio champ. Maybe WV?
Ding! Ding! We have a winner on the bonus questions. Congrats!
Yesterday in the 132 pound Lebanon final Joey Thamann beat Colton Bendure of Mason 4-1 in a match that went to tiebreaker. Last year, wrestling for James Wood High School in Winchester, Virginia, sophomore Bendure won the Division 4 120 pound championship.
(Yeah, I know it was kind of a trick question. But Cram26 got it.)

Congratulations to sophomore Colin Broxterman (106), juniors Konner Lambers (126) and Joey Thamann (132), and senior Lucas Kurzhals (157) as they earned a trip to the Schott next week. Lambers finished second, Broxterman and Kurzhals finished third, and Thamann finished fourth. This will be the first trip to the state tournament for Broxterman and Kurzhals and the third trip for Lambers and Thamann.
Congrats also to senior Michael Yerian, who finished sixth at 285.
Finally, congrats to the other six Panthers who wrestled at Kettering: seniors Brady Mentz (138), Phil Corcoran (150), Brayden Kuhling (165), and Ian James (215); and juniors Zach Ridner (175) and Carson Williams (190).
The Panthers finished in seventh place with 95.5 points; LaSalle won it with 169.5 points and Moeller finished third with 165.0 points.

Some may know this little nugget. But this still impresses me every year. I think it speaks volumes of the program, alumni, supporters, and the coaching staff.

This marks the 44th straight year in which Elder has been represented at the State Tournament with at least one wrestler! Since Elder started the wrestling program in 1962-63 (this current season marks the 62nd season of Elder Wrestling), there have only been 5 seasons when Elder was not represented at the State Tournament. During the 1963 – 1970 seasons, only the District champion qualified for the State Tournament. During that time, there were only eight wrestlers who competed in the State Tournament. From 1971 to present day, the top four District placers qualified for the State Tournament.
