WR Michael Czyz, caught his 14th TD pass of the year in Game 8 for the Spartans, passing the single season record for the school.

He is averaging over 30 yards per reception.

In case you were wondering, DLS has 2 current NFL wide receivers as part of its alumni: Amani Toomer and Demetrius Williams

Pretty impressive for any school, much less one that doesn't win because of talent.

In related news another school famous for winning with litte talent, has a plyaer on the Davy O'Brien and Heisman watch lists....

What is amazing about Czyz is how small he is. I think he is about 5'9 and I would bet he has caught less then 30 passes this year total.

Yep, he is on the watch lists this year but probably won't win anything unless he has some great games in the conference championship and bowl games.

However . . . . he's got a very good chance to be an even stronger candidate next year.

Who knows. This year in the NCAA is crazy.

Do you think he'll be pumped up coming to Austin next year?

I will take credit for part of it, but I do think me mentioning uber talented players at schools known for not having talented players was on topic.

I agree. I think talking about any player with great stats would contribute to this particular thread. No doubt Consumerman will disagree but nobody else will care.

You might notice there are more comments about hijacking than the actual original topic.

To keep it on topic, I wonder if there should be a limit of D1 of NFL players from one HS where they have to be considered a "talented" program.

14 TD passes is impressive especially considering its' only through 8 games. How many TD catches do the other receivers have?

By comparison, Clint Renfro caught 23 TD passes in 2004 (his best year) but that was less than 1/2 of the team total of 50.

McKay Jacobson caught 17 TD passes his best year (2005) but that was only a fraction of the team total that year of 63. The other top three receivers had 13, 12 and 8 TD catches.

In 2006 SLC tossed 56 TD passes with the top receivers catching 9, 11, 12 and 14 TD passes.

I saw Renfro play

He was extrememly good

what happened to him

through 8 games

DLS QBs (3) have thrown a TOTAL of 89 passes

20 of those have gone for TDS

PASSING:

PLYR G ATT COMP % YDS TD INT AYPC

MACG 7 46 35 76 852 12 1 24.3

WAYNE 8 31 21 67 430 8 2 20.4

MONTANA 6 12 8 66 125 0 0 15.6

YTD TOTAL 8 89 64 71 1407 20 3 22.9

note 12 of those passes are by thrid stringer Nate Montana who only plays late in the game in blowouts

so the DLS starters have 20 TD passes in 77 pass attempts

and this is a veer option team

His best year was 2004 when he caught 23 TD passes. He was injured for part of the year in 2005 (his senior year). Was had several D1 offers and went to TCU where he is playing football and running track. His father is a TCU alumni.

that game on tv the other team could not stop him

he was truly excpetional

hope his injuries work out

In other words, the opponent is forced to put most of it's effort into stopping the strong DLS option running game. Then when the opponent focuses to much on the run, DLS frequently burns them with a TD pass.

No doubt . . . fun to watch.

you are correct

pick your poison

either load the box with 8-9 defenders to stop the run and get burned by passes

or play conventional and good luck stopping a crisp running attack with 2 great RBs and a great running QB (best case scenario) with agile fast lineman with military precision

good luck

Mater Dei would do the reverse especially in the 90s

4 fast agile WR and a good QB with a 225 lb Notre Dame bound RB who was powerful and quick enough (Mike McNair)

what are you going to do?

Going to the spread attack instead of their difficult to stop but predictable veer is a huge difference this year. In my opinion this is what killed them in the title game last year. CC being able to stack the line in anticipation of the run.

The Defense is very quick and is like a swarm of bees.
