Division IV Region 13

As a supporter of Lake Catholic, I think it is safe to say that they will be in the DIV R13 playoffs this year. LC is having a successful season, and a solid Cardinal Mooney team has also been added to the region. (They beat Lake in the season opener). I don't know a lot about the other teams in the region.

In terms of computer points, Joe Eitel has the top 10
1.Canton South
2.Streetsboro
3.Lake Catholic
4.Niles McKinley
5.Cardinal Mooney
6.West Branch
7.Struthers
8.Poland Seminary
9.Edgewood
10. Beaver Local

Drew Pasteur's ranking
1.Canton South
2.Lake Catholic
3.Streetsboro
4.Poland Seminary
5.Struthers
6.Niles McKinley
7.West Branch
8.Cardinal Mooney
9.Buchtel
10.Edgewood

Thoughts? Are there any other teams outside of these two lists that make noise in the playoffs? How accurate are the rankings?

The lists are ok, but Edgewood should not be on any list of a top team. They’re beating very bad teams for their wins and get blown out by any team with a pulse

I think not in any order these teams can win the region

CS
Struthers
Poland
Girard
LC
Streetsboro
West branch

I watched some of the Poland - South Range game on YSN and I was a little surprised. I figured it would be a close game, but I thought Poland would be on the winning side of the score.

Good list. I might just swap out Steetsboro for Mooney, or maybe, just add Mooney as a slight shot

Taking a closer look, Streetsboro's best wins so far are against Alliance and CVCA. Cardinal Mooney's best wins are against Lake Catholic and Clyde. I would definitely say Mooney belongs in place of Streetsboro. I'm also not sure why Girard would be considered a possible contender.

I'm sure nobody thought Jefferson would be a contender last year, and they won the region. Girard would be a contender just on the talent of their offense. I know they don't play much defense, but they have the fastest skill players in the region and a good passing QB.

Crazy think is Jefferson isn’t coming close to winning a game this year l

That's true...and what a disappointing turn-around for Jefferson. I'm assuming they graduated a lot from last year's team...but it doesn't look like they've been competitive in any of their games this year.

Does Girard risk getting bumped from the playoffs this year? They play South Range, Poland, Hubbard and Niles. I'm thinking they will have to win two of those games to be safe.

I would say these teams have a chance to win the region:
Lake Catholic, Cardinal Mooney, Poland Seminary, Canton South, Struthers, West Branch
The dark horses are Niles McKinley, Streetsboro and Girard
No one else has a realistic chance

The fact that Jefferson won the region last year was a fluke and required a lot of good luck more than anything else, a lot of very unlikely things happened and the stars alligned allowing them to win the region. Jefferson had everything go their way. Quite a few other teams in the region were better than Jefferson last year, but many of them had injuries and were all banged up, meanwhile Jefferson was relatively healthy. Mind you even if West Branch had their QB at 100% an available to play defense, they still get slaughtered by Glenville just the same.

I'd rather not bring up Glenville until we have to...it would have been great to see Jefferson play Van Wert in the semi-final last year. I don't know if their luck would have been enough to beat VW, but at least it would have been between teams that belonged there.

They would have needed all the lucky bounces to beat Van Wert as well, it would have taken a great deal of luck for sure.

This weekend's games of interest...

Canton South 6-0 vs Triway 2-4
Streetsboro 5-1 vs Field 2-4
Lake Catholic 5-1 vs Padua 3-3
Niles 5-1 vs Poland 5-1

Mooney 4-2 vs Chaney 2-3
West Branch 5-1 vs Marlington 4-2
Struthers 4-2 vs Lakeview 3-3
Girard 4-2 vs South Range 5-1
Buchtel 2-4 vs Garfield

1. I think Padua has a team that could beat LC if Lake comes in flat and/or doesn't take care of the ball.
2. Niles vs Poland is being discussed on another thread...but computer points and seeding are on the line.
3. Girard is putting up a lot of points, South Range is not giving up many points. The last three games between these to have not been close. WKBN has this as the game of the week and they have some good info on the series.

As a big fan of what Canton South has done this year I do think they're the biggest unknown in the region
I think their offense is top 3 in the region centered around a really good QB. Their defense leaves a little less than desired, it’ll be interesting the matchups we get the first 2 rounds. You can have teams like girard and Buchtel getting a high seed that nobody will want to play out the gate

Why are they a big unknown? They went 3 rounds deep in the playoffs last year, returned their nucleus on offense, they put up 40 points a game and while their defense is getting much better, have a tendency to struggle stopping the run. They also are used to playing in tight games which helps in the playoffs and are getting every teams best shot week in and week out. They are battle tested.

They're going to play 5 weeks in a row where their starters should be sitting by the end of the 3rd quarter if not earlier and the Manchester result last week was absolutely perplexing. I'm not saying they're on upset alert or anything like that but they are a team that it's been hard to get a read on from week to week
