D1 state duals final eight - 2/10 at St. Edward

Qualifying teams:
St. Edward
TBD from Findlay - they started at 4:00
Massillon Perry
Brecksville (won 8/14 weights to beat Wadsworth)
Dublin Coffman
Olentangy Liberty
La Salle
Springboro (decisive win over Harrison)

What seeding might look like (my opinion only):
-the obvious: St. Edward at 1, Massillon Perry at 2, Dublin Coffman at 3, Findlay bracket winner at 8
-somewhat obvious: Springboro is going to get seeded ahead of Olentangy Liberty due to a head-on dual meet win
-final opinion: Brecksville at 4, La Salle at 5, Springboro at 6, Olentangy Liberty at 7

If my seeds were to hold:
-first round Brecksville vs. La Salle dual could be a tight one. Last year the teams dualed first round, and it was a Brecksville blowout
-first round Dublin Coffman vs. Springboro dual probably will be tighter than what the individual roster talent profiles would suggest. Coffman has some real high end talent in a way that Springboro doesn't. However, Springboro covers the "14" real well, and Coffman does have a few holes.

To me, wrestling has always been an individual sport. Each kid is responsible for their own success on and off the mat. 2013 is the first year OHSAA crowned a dual team state champion for each of the 3 divisions.

As a wrestler, fan, parent, coach -there is nothing compared to competing, watching, coaching in Columbus at the OHSAA state finals. (This is an opinion; others can argue other states but that's not the point)

I have been around wrestling for almost 30 years. Throughout my time, I have been to a variety of in school duals at different highs schools in the state of Ohio. Each wrestling program, different and had varying wrestling history, some with hardly any to none.

The in school dual, I would argue is one of the best ways of promoting wrestling. The atmosphere for the wrestlers and the spectators- unreal. I understand the logic and reasoning behind team dual championships.

There isn't a right or wrong answer to when you choose not to participate. A coach makes a decision to protect his wrestlers. I don't think its avoiding matches as much as it is the season grind is a gauntlet. The 4 matches at the state tournament, those are the most important of the season. Every wrestler dream is to be a state champ.

Injury is the single worst part of sport. If I chose to have my team participate in the team state duals, and one of seniors goes down to an injury...that would be devastating.

The timing of the state duals, maybe that is something to look into? I think many more coaches and programs would be more willing in December/January than in February. Many kids are still shuffling their weights for the final haul of the season, I would think you would see more match ups take place with the wrestlers moving around to wrestle the best wrestlers within the dual.

Wrestling is the best. Coach's relationships with their wrestlers are different than in any other sport. They will do what is best for the wrestler and put their kids in the best-case scenario.

Enjoy this part of the season!

What happen to hartshorn

How necessary are the Regional duals? Do coaches outside of the top 4 in each region really want to participate this late in the season? Looking at the scores only 2 of the 16 final matches were close to competitive.

JMO, They should go back to how it was before the State took over. Eight teams from each division going to three different sites wrestling three rounds.

Does the bracket continue for 5th and 7th place?
Yes that bracket is a misprint...
