D1 R4 Outlook

let's get the talking going now: team rankings, underdogs, players to watch, up and coming teams, etc.

R4 is now home to kings and mason...how's it look for them?

juker's top 4 in R4:

Moeller - strong offense. loses two of the best d-poles in the state however. anyone know what they're gonna do? until someone disrupts them, they are #1 right now

St. X - very, very talented junior/senior class this year. look for them to finally gel and emerge #2 in R4

Lakota West - lose most of their goalscorers from last year, but this years team is the most athletic they will field. a #3 finish seems realistic.

Indian Hill - in the same situation as LW. some truely talented players will help them lock up the #4 spot, or even #3.

team to watch: Sycamore - still struggling after losing a whooping 19 seniors two years ago. but this years team i feel will take some steps forward and may open a few eyes this year.

how can you honestly put IH at 4th possibly 3rd? they won the city last year beating all these teams listed here in the regular season, yeah they lose alot of good talent but they still have alot of kids that are going to step up and open some eyes...and X is no way in 2nd or even close to winning R 4, they only have good middies, they have a new goalie who isnt that good, theyre d will be decent but they only have one attack man in chad carroll...oh and mason and kings being in division 1 is an absolute joke, they are going to get merked by any team in d 1 they play, IH Moe or X's JV's could beat Kings or Masons varsitys...

i can put IH where i put them because they rode their way through regular season on senior middies, and without them, i'm not sure what they're going to do this year. and i feel X is 2nd because of Collura will rally those boys and bring together their athletic ability to make them #2 in the city.

I graduated from last years St. X varsity team and you are absolutely wrong about them. Most of their JV defensemen from last year could have made varsity had there been enough spots. Their middies do not lose a lot from last year and they will probably have one of the highest scoring first line of middies in the state. Their attack will be even better than last year's attack. Not only do they have Chad Carroll, but they return James Hill who fought injuries last year but is an outstanding crease attackman, Blake Stanislaw is one of the fastest attackmen I've ever seen and will do many good things from the X position. Jordy Kamp and Grift Krehnbrink are two excellent left handed attackmen. The returning defensemen from last years team is quick and throws good checks. This team is still young and will be good for the next few years. I'll go out on a limb and compare this years team to the 2005 team. All these kids have been playing together for awhile as part of the Blue Jays or Indian Hill youth teams.

Go out on a limb.... your're way out in left field. I agree that this team will be better than last years, but that's not saying much.... that team was terrible. But never compare to the 2005 team. That team was a senior laden team that had played together since 5th grade. It was the best team to ever play for STX. You say that the attack will be even better than last year. I agree. Last years was the worse one in a few years. The fact that the two top scorers were middies tells you a lot. Chad Carroll is not the answer. Remember last year he was benched toward the end of the season.
This team will be improved, but the defense will have to prove itself since it will be made up of last years JV team, which choked against Columbus teams.

St. X attack

I would have to agree that you would be out on a very long limb to say the '07 team will rival the '05 squad. Many folks believe the 05 team was one bad call away from winning state - we'll never know.

However, this year's team WILL be better than last year, and much of their success will depend on the performance of the attackmen.

I think it's unfair to bash the attack unit from last year considering that the majority of the time the workload was left to a junior and two sophomores...All of which were inexperienced at the Varsity level. Furthermore, the attack as a unit suffered from the system....which was to feed a streaking Saelinger or Craig (which isnt a bad game plan)- thus the leading scorers.

Carrol (leading point man among attack in '06) and Kamp (leading goal scorer among attack '06) are your locks right now. Look for both of them to improve on last year's numbers. I think Stanislaw and Hill are equally effective in the middle, depending on what kind of system you want to run. Both had injury plagued seasons so, i dont really know.

A bigger question might be how the coaches will use the personnel on this much more experienced (overall) team.

IH, Moe, and X will be the at the top of R4 this year. Depends on who wants it most.

Last year's terrible team took Moeller into overtime, lost to Indian Hill by one on a late goal, and should have beat West in the first round of the playoffs. The refs gave West a break in that game, but that's old news. Most of the players on the 2007 team have played together since 5th grade. True you cannot replace Danny and Paul Collura, but this team will surprise people. I played with these kids last year and they really started to click towards the end of the year. And Chad wasn't benched last season because of his skills, there was a personal thing between him and the coaches. The defense is questionable, however I have faith in the abilities of the JV defensemen because alot of Cincinnati teams struggle against C-bus teams, but this offense knows the varsity system and has already been together for a year at the varsity level. Expect lots of goals from the middies again this year and more goals out of a veteran attack group. Oh and whoever made the comment that their goalie is bad has never seen him play. He played the second half of a lot of games last year and has lots of experience. He will be a solid goalie this year. Last year's team had too much drama and injuries to do much damage but this years team will definately surprise people.

this is exactly what i was thinking too. if the two attackmen (carrol and kamp) can step up, they will have an offense that can rack up the points.

St X also has the best defenseman from Mariemont. For the 2nd year in a row.

St X will continue to get better. I would hate to play them at the end of the year.

Maybe in 2007 but not even close in 2006. I recall a guy by the name of Mitch Frey. Name sound familiar. 2006 All American. Were you better than him last year......... I don't think so. Also at 100 pounds soaking wet, you are not very intimidating.

My complaint with you is that your trying to equate the 2007 team, which hasn't played a game yet, to the 2005 team. Sure this team will be better than last year. You can't get much worse. (Only one D1 win). The current team will have more experience and the schedule is easier. A lot of D2/club games. (anderson, turpin, seven hills, ccd)

I meant in the freshman class.

2009 Polplis

I know that kid. He's got potential...I see him as a LSM this year for St. X

Mitch Frey deserved more credit than was given to him as well. 2nd Team All-State? Come on, Northern Ohio! You're gonna tell me that some juniors (except Max Schmidt...that guy is just insane) are better than Mitch?

Somethings gotta be done with this voting system. Northern Ohio coaches outnumber ours greatly, which gives Southern Players a much, much harder chance at making 1st Team...and in Mitch's case, even when you're an All-American!

Fine maybe not the 2005 team, but this team will surprise people. They will also keep the same players for 1-2 more years.

X attack

Chad has gotten bigger and can shoot with either hand, look for him to have a dominant year.

Don't underestimate the impact James Hill will have this year. They missed him last year. He is a mature leader.

Grift Krehnbrink is a beast. He provides valuable attack depth. He'll be very good in '07.

What nobody has mentioned, their offensive coordinator retired, so the offense will probably be somewhat different this year.

I agree, but its not the Northern Ohio coaches, they have the same problem that we do. Its the Central Ohio coaches who control this sport in Ohio. IMA they are not interested in getting this sport sanctioned because they would lose a lot of their infuence and power.

Also FYI the All-American status is a US Lacrosse designation and is voted on by the local chapter. So the discrepency you noted about Mitch is not unusual. The All-Ohio teams are picked by everyone, while the All-American status is voted on by the Southern Ohio US Lacrosse chapter only. With Columbus having the most teams, and playing less and less Cincinnati teams, in many cases, they are not aware, or have not seen some of the premier players in the South. This is not an excuse. The system of picking All-Ohio teams needs to be revamped.

One last thing about the All-American voting, and then I'll shut up. Because the voting is done by the local chapter of US Lacrosse, the quality of talent picked is not equal between chapters. An All-American in Indiana may not be at the same talent level as an All-American from Southern Ohio, who may not be as good as an All-American from Central Ohio, who may not be as good as an All-American form the east coast, etc

OK, where i do begin? First Chad has gotten bigger tall wise, but hes still not that thick, avg size athlete, and anyone on varsity should be able to shoot with both hands, yet ill give it to you chad is good...

Grift Krehnbrink is NOT a BEAST of anykind, hes fat and slow, yeah he might have a good shot and can probably roll the crease on kids in JV, but this isnt JV, this is varsity, grift has never played a varisty game, he will get torn up by any legit D 1 defensman cause hes too slow and he just cant sit back and rip like he did on JV...

And i have never heard of a team having an offense coordinator in lacrosse, usually the head coach tells the kids what to do and calls in plays, but i don tknow

When I said "in '07" I meant next season (as opposed to this coming season), my bad. That said, I do expect him to help on offense this year. He is certainly not slow for a fellow his size, and can overpower people in certain matchups. It's not like they'll need him to be a big scorer this season or anything.

The Bombers last year had three coaches on varsity. Coach Collura is the head coach, then they had two assistants, one for offense and one for defense. Coach Collura was a goalie in college so he is not really an offense guy so much. The guy who ran their offense retired. So they will probably bring in somebody new to run the offense. It stands to reason, the new guy will probably bring some changes with him, no? To some extent? What that means, remains to be seen.

I've come to find out that in Ohio, our individual players are more athletic than the ones found on the east coast, and just as good actually. But as a whole unit, we don't play nearly as well, which is what kills us when and if we play teams from out east.

give me a break. when was the last time an Ohio team beat Georgetown Prep. the game there is much faster and they have substantially better stick skills. they don't play bump and bash, they play finesse

Collura rally???? that's an oxymoron ( I know I spelled that wrong) no way is Collura an inspirational coach. ever hear his "do it for the Gipper" speech? no? not suprising, he doesen't talk to the players at halftime. Only the defensive coach provides inspiration.

Look at what I said before you start ranting.

Our individual players are bigger, stronger, and faster than those found on the east coast. Our stick skills are also very well-off (take Jason Keck for example). So why is it then that we aren't able to compete with them? Simple: we don't play as a whole like them. I've seen some of these fabled east-coast teams like Boys Latin play before, and guess what? The kids ain't that big, and they aren't that so much better at one-on-one dodging than we are. But they put everything together so perfectly and near effortless...that's what they've got that we don't. We've got a huge athletic pool, and some of our individuals are as good, if not better than some of their individual players. But we can not play as effective as a team.

Nope, east coast laxers are just as big. Yes, they play better lacrosse because they have been playing longer.

I agree with Laxplayer somewhat on this one. If you go to camps like top 205 and blue chip, the east coasters arent that much better as individuals but there is just so much more of them. Nearly every kid on lets say Boys Latin or Georgetown Prep would be a stud if they played in Cincinnati. Their skills are just so much more refined. The midwest with the exception of a couple of programs, is still many years behind the east coast programs and it hurts to admit it.

east coast lax is musch better than midwest, but the athletic ability of the midwest teams is far greater than that of most east coast teams. East coast teams also play together almost all year round going from tourny to tourny. The best high school lax in the country is without a doubt in central new york, they bring the perfect mix of finese and physical play.

Central NY has some scary teams. But yes, I really think our athletic ability in the midwest is greater than those on the East coast...but they've just been playing the game for long that we just can't keep up.
