Conversion of 200 m track results to 300 m / banked

This will get some of the record keepers on here in an uproar!

The OATCCC & @OHMileSplit are excited to announce the conversion of 200 m track results to 300 m / banked track times for the 2025 Indoor Track & Field Season!!!! #letsgooooooo

This doesn't surprise me at all. It looks my other thread https://yappi.com/forum/index.php?t...m-the-community-indoor-all-time-lists.376652/ was fortuitous. I SWEAR I had no knowledge of OATCCC & Ohio MileSplit doing this.

This does not change requirements for record-keeping, however. Records can only be made on 200m tracks or less (less are hard to find these days, however). I will be curious to see how they will delineate, if at all, on what sized tracks each mark are made on. On my lists, it will be quite clear as I have a whole database on track sizes around the midwest and those of a few of the big meets.

This is great news. I always thought athletes in the northeast part of the state had a huge advantage in indoor season with Spire, Akron, Youngstown, Kent, Ashland all fairly close for most of them. SW/SE schools have two meets at Wittenberg or 3-5 hour drives ahead of them to find 300m opportunities.

Just a gentle reminder...only marks made on 200m tracks, flat or banked, are recognized for record purposes. Conversions are only for comparative and entry purposes.

Update: I'm well into the process of converting marks using the NCAA standards that are in use. It's a doozy of a project as I have to properly classify marks made over both yards & meters, banked and flat, and over-sized tracks into one comparative column. The biggest challenge is the plethora of boys' marks over the last 50+ years that result in 6 individual columns for the 1600/mile & 3200/2-Mile. I think you'll find this interesting in the end.

Request for input from Finishtiming & the community. I've been using the following set of conversions of under-sized, standard-sized, and over-sized tracks to the 200m banked/300m flat track configurations now common. https://files.trackie.com/uploads/article-inner/Documents/CIS-Indoor-Track-Conversion-Ratios.pdf

200m banked/300m flat are considered equivalent according to the prevailing theory/experience. Almost all configurations are handled...except one that I've found. The conversion factor that I see missing is that of old 10-11 laps/mile (160yd/176yd) tracks that are BANKED and converting those to a 200m banked tracks. I'd like some input on this if anyone has it.

So far, here are the different size/configuration tracks (in increasing size) I'm dealing with from past marks:

160yd (banked)
176yd (flat)
176yd (banked)
188yd (flat)
200m (flat)
200m (banked)
220yd (flat)
290m (flat)
292m (flat)
300m (flat)
307m (flat)

Here's a snippet of boys' 1600m/Mile combined list as of now. As you look at it, all the track sizes, banked & flat, are located in one column. The preceding column indicates the conversion factor necessary to convert from that performance into the equivalent performances over 1600m on a 200m banked facility using the conversion factors listed in my previous post. Each performance is placed under the appropriate column of track size/configuration. The converted figures are shown in the highlighted column, 2nd from the left. I given a key to the notations noted beside the converted marks of that column below for a better understanding.

Note: This is NOT the finalized list, but a list of where the current list of converted sub 4:15.0 performers/peformances stands today. The finalized list will have sub 4:15 performances, and sub 4:20 performers for the 1600m. The oldest mark dates back to 1971 when Ron Addison (Cleveland Rhodes, '72) rant an amazing 4:19.5 MT for the mile on Rhodes underground 176yd flat track his junior year. Multiplying that mark by the conversion factor given yields an equivalent 4:13.3 MT 1600m on a 200m banked track.

Here are the notations for the marks in the highlighted column:
" + " = converted mark from performance over a one mile race
" o " = mark over a 1600m or mile race made on an over-sized track ( > 200m). If made over an 1600m on an over-sized track, the conversion is 1-to-1. If the mark was made over the longer mile on an over-sized track, then the conversion is the standards 0.9942
" º " = mark made enroute to a longer mile peformance where the 1600m time was recorded by FAT.

I'm doing the same approach for the other track events over 60m, so if you have any suggestions, please feel free to chime in. Given the depth I'm taking this to, I think it is more realistic for me to push the publication for the all-time indoor lists to the end of this season, but it will be updated throughout to include any peformances from this season that meet the following criteria:

Boys' Cut-offs (converted marks for over 60m)
Performers / Performances
60m - sub 7.00 / sub 6.90
200m - sub 22.0 for both
400m - sub 50.0 / sub 49.00
800m - sub 1:55 / sub 1:54.0
1600m - sub 4:20 / sub 4:15.0
3200m - sub 9:20 / sub 9:15.0

Girls' Cut-offs (converted marks for over 60m)
Performers / Performances
60m - sub 8.00 / sub 7.70
200m - sub 25.50 / sub 25.00
400m - sub 58.00 / sub 57.00
800m - sub 2:16.0 / sub 2:14.0
1600m - sub 5:00.0 / sub 4:55.0
3200m - sub 11:00.0 / sub 10:50.0

Anyway, I wanted to get this out there for now to spark interest and comment. Anything to further the sport for future historians.

FYI - Please feel free to upload into any of your databases. That goes for timing companies as well.
