Conference championship question?!?!?

Heard a talking head mention something strange. Is it possible for a team, say Ohio State, to turn down an invitation to the conference championship with Oregon in order to assure health for the CF Playoffs??? Seems possible but is there an actual rule in the conference or NCAA to deter this???

I'd say anything is on the table now. There will be teams who lose conference championship games who don't go to the playoffs. Is that right? I'd be in favor of doing away with the conference championship games and adding another conference regular season game, and eliminate all but one non conference games. These conferences are too big now to miss half the conference.

The Big 12 may not even have one team worthy of being in the National playoffs. The loser of the Big 12 championship game should not be considered for the playoffs.

But here's the fallacy of the whole thing, it's not intended to be the top 12 teams in the country. If that's the case then why involve conference play? And we all know that an SEC team is at a disadvantage from other conferences due to schedule strength.

I think we are in agreement. It should be the 12 most deserving teams. The 4 power conferences should not have automatic bids and first round byes.

Eliminate the conference championship games. Just seed the top 12 teams according to ranking and start the playoffs. Why should an independent be given a bye?
Logically, only 6 or 7 of the 12 playoff teams will even play in a conference title game, so your gripe should be with the conference at-large invitees who don’t play in their conference title game, not independents who are not afforded an opportunity at a Top 4 seed.

There’s plenty for gripe to go around for both. No one is forcing Independents to stay independent.

I am in favor of just throwing the top 64 to 80 teams in one big league with division … each team can play only one non league (pre season) game with teams outside the league … then have an NFL style schedule and playoff.

They could probably cull the herd down to 40 to 48 teams pretty easily and have an NFL-style league.

There are 67 teams in the Power 4, but that includes plenty of programs that would have no business in an NFL type of league, such as:

Cincinnati
Houston
Kansas
UCF
Syracuse
Boston College
Wake Forest
Duke
Purdue
Indiana
Northwestern
Minnesota
Rutgers
Maryland
Vanderbilt

That’s 15 easy ones right there. You’re 4 away from a 48-team league already. Schools like UVA, UK, Iowa State, Illinois, Cal, Stanford, SMU, etc. could be on thin ice as the last four to go.

Even though they are not relevant … that is a lot of eyes you are eliminating … the one thing I have learned about with all the conference reshuffling … TV ratings matter.

TV ratings would go up if the big boys didn’t spend so many weeks playing glorified scrimmages against tomato cans.

I agree but too much money involved. Like someone else posted all conferences should be playing the same number of games. It's a joke UGA is playing UMASS, and Bama Mercer at the end of the year.

Agreed. The SEC really needs to brandish Chicken Shi+ Saturday.
That’s one thing that needs to go away for sure.

I’m sure FOX and CBS execs would jump for joy if they never again got saddled with Purdue, Minnesota, Maryland, Indiana, etc. in a premium timeslot.

Unless they are playing OSU or Michigan, then they’ll be happy.

If you get rid of Rutgers, Illinois, NW, and say Minnesota … and so on … why would those areas watch the games in this new conference … they wouldn’t … there was a reason the B10 took Rutgers into the conference … large population area … gave them a vested interest in watching all B10 games

So with this logic, are you claiming that cities and states without an NFL team don’t watch the NFL?

Do people north of the Mason-Dixon Line watch SEC games?

People watch because it’s the top tier of the sport.

Cincinnati has no NBA team, but there are plenty of NBA fans here.

Your logic makes no sense.

Talk about an apples to cucumber comparison there, AEW.

The cities without NFL teams don’t have a team playing in another league … Cincinnati doesn’t have a pro basketball team … big difference … and yes some fans will still watch … but more will watch if they are part of the league.

Ironically, Indiana probably would not had even made the cut on the first 40-48 teams a year ago.

If Oklahoma hadn't blown out the Crimson Pachyderms. I think that the selection committee would have left Georgia OUT in the COLD, once again! Even though every time MIGHTY Tejas sees a bulldog, they piss in their panties. WE SHOULDA put BEVO on a STICK, and ROASTED his butt, after their LAST loss. They're gonna regret trying to make that mad cow gore my boy UGA!

SOOOOO, put yourself in OUR place for a minute. Say you have fourteen teams, worthy of the playoffs. Yet they cannibalize each other like the NFL. And on the outside looking in, NOBODY to the necked eye, seems worthy of a TOP TWELVE ranking, with two or more losses. Look at the SEC THIS season, a little more parity than most seasons, BUT! GENERALLY speaking, we have at LEAST 6-8 teams, who are playoff worthy. THIS season, EVERYBODY, short of Mississippi State, would give ANYONE in the playoffs, a run for their money. Can you imagine Boise State having an even chance, against the likes of Mississippi, South Carolina, and Alabama? And as wildcards, throw in Vandy, LSU, Missouri, Florida, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. CONVERSELY, by FAR the second best conference is the Big Ten! And you go only FOUR maybe FIVE deep. And most seasons, it's two or three. But IF the committee, in a given season, had the audacity to put HALF of the playoff teams in from the SEC. I can hear the chirping and screaming ALLLL the way from Nittany Mountains, to the cesspool they call the Pacific Ocean. So I say, conference champs from the SEC, the Big Ten, and the ACC. And the remaining top nine in the rankings. WHAT say YOU?

Remember one thing. This is not an NCAA sanctioned/sponsored playoff. It is a glorified exhibition run by a few people in the SEC, Big 10, and ESPN.
