Darby is the best job.

<decent gap>

Whitehall has more general upside than Thomas, but situationally might be tougher than TW.

Marysville is tough sledding at the moment.

<even bigger gap>

Logan

May I ask why Marysville is tough sledding? I’m honestly curious.

i read they failed a levy and it now costs $700 per sport per athlete
I guess they have reduced it... a little...

I have heard from a guy, that knows a guy😂 that Hilliard Darby is looking to take a good look at Westland's coach after their successful season. As someone who likes to see the turn around on the westside I would hate to see it... but it would make sense.

As long as Darby is cool with tons of move ins and openly recruiting….if so he’s your guy. May be more challenging to hook up a rental for a player in Hilliard than the Westland district

Each one of these jobs seem to have questions.

Darby---Do they have the skill kids to compete? I've watched them and they seem to lacking the skill to compete especially in the QB department?

Whitehall---no real consistent culture here as far as winning goes can they get a coach who will stay and build or is it helpless

Marysville---who wants to deal with levy issues?

Worthington---seems to have very little toughness on either side of the line

Logan--no way they can compete with the Columbus schools, very up hill battle here

The silver lining to Whitehall is their league being subpar.

Darby by default is the best of the current openings. Remember that TW and Marysville are in their part of the OCC.

Here I was thinking the only job getting added to this thread was Alder, lol. Monday morning surprise from Emerald Parkway!

I’ll never understand what Logan was thinking. I know their league situation was dicey, but they weren’t winning against small SE Ohio schools. On the flip side, what was the OCC thinking? Stupid on both sides. I don’t know how Logan can sell that job to any one of decency.

I’d take my chances at Whitehall in that league way, way before the Logan job.

My guess is Marysville goes back in the ballot in the fall, but they should try for Spring when historically, there will be very small voter turnout. Going to the polls in what was going to be a monster voter turnout for the Presidential election was suicidal. They should have known better.

The Gales wanted Logan for all sports. One of those situations where Lancaster was telling the OCC “one way or another, we’re going to be in a league with the Chieftains.”

It had been in the works for a while. Below article from December ‘17.

Lancaster Eagle-Gazette said:
That did not sit well with Lancaster principal Scott Burre and athletic director Pam Bosser, who met with Logan officials on Nov. 21 to discuss forming a new league. Canal Winchester, Teays Valley, Reynoldsburg, Zanesville and Groveport were among the schools represented at the meeting with Logan.

“As an athletic director I want to put our kids in the best situation,” Bosser said. “I don’t want to go in a division where we win all the time. That’s not what I’m looking for. I’m looking for a division where we can compete.

"If that’s in the OCC in a realigned division, then that is obviously good for us, but if that doesn’t happen, and in order to do what is best for our kids and provide them with the best opportunity, maybe if that alignment doesn’t come back and is not favorable to us then maybe we will be open to what the Logan group has to say.”

I knew this. But it still doesn’t make it right for either side. The OCC will always have some unrest with that many teams and the growth in central OH. It’s just that of all the teams in the OCC, Logan is the one that doesn’t fit the growth profile. It’s going to be impossible for them to keep up.

Correct; and agree with you 100%. Logan is closer to D3 than they are D1 in the long-term if I recall correctly. The district is experiencing enrollment decline, and also under the gun on "growth" due to how many properties in the territory have gone into the AirBnB/rental properties domain in recent years (that plus yuppie/Double Income No Kids cohorts buying down there in the era of WFH.)

It won’t get any better with a fifth Olentangy and a fourth Dublin on the way. That means more OCC movement.

But if you look at some of the reasons Lancaster admin talks about in the article, especially economic factors, that makes it really puzzling for Logan. If it wasn’t working for Lancaster, on the edge of Central OH growth, then how does it work for Logan? Yes, they are probably closer to D3, but their football program is in a state of disarray that puts them in a much lower category than that. If you can’t compete and beat the likes of Athens and Minford, how can expect to compete with Pick Central, Canal, Reynoldsburg, etc?

have we considered that the Gales, who tried going on a “free win safari” by scheduling Akron North and a team from NNJ last year, only look out for themselves when they tell Logan that the OCC is a good fit for the Chieftains. Or when they take to the press to advocate for their best interests

I agree that the Logan job is a general graveyard as long as they’re in the OCC, to be clear. The coach that follows the next coach might have a better opportunity to make something work.

On another thread they said the JA coach will be taking the Darby job. Anyone have insight on that? Coffman is open, I have to think that's the number one job in Columbus now.
Coffman
JA
Darby
everyone else

He would be good fit at Darby, not sure if he is taking that job or not. I would say JA has the best chance for immediate success. Darby and Coffman have the uphill battle of the OCC but would certainly say Coffman is above Darby. Safe to say nobody will touch Logan if they are smart. TW and Whitehall are rebuilds with potential

I agree for the most part.

I think where I disagree (not even that much of a disagreement): you can look to compare Darby and Coffman in the short-term vs long-term.

Short-term: Darby may be more winnable. Marysville and TW will be automatic wins these next two years, and the non-league might be an easier road to hoe. Shamrocks by contrast is in the really rugged side of the OCC. Not sure the Ghost of Paul Brown can scrape up two league wins in ‘25 on Coffman Road.

Darby is prob more winnable in the next 1-2 years if their talent level with respect to the top of their OCC side is the same as Coffman’s w/r/t the OCC-Central.

Long-term: Coffman hands down is the better job. No dispute there!

Doubtful, they typically get a OCC assistant who then gets poached after 3-4 years for a OCC head coaching job. Don't see him heading that way but I could be wrong
He still lives in Urbana (it was already out there) and in the Dispatch he did say he was still looking to coach. Based on his last comment, JA prob checks those boxes.

Then again, this offseason water cooler talk is just that 😂

I disagree that it is hands down better. Darby is typically solid and has good support, I just think coffman is the program in Dublin and Darby is the 3rd best Hilliard but that could be flipped! That division for Coff is brutal though could scare off coaches and kids

Absolutely checks those boxes. Time will tell, but if he wants the JA job, chances are they have talked and if he wants it that job will be his before the new year

Just trying to understand why is JA's previous coach considered the front runner for the Darby job? In his 4 years at JA he has gone 6-5, 6-5, 7-4, 5-6. To me it seems since Glass has left after the 2020 season Jonathan alder has taken a step back in football.
