um of course it will help them...I could see if they jumped to DII then no probably would not help them all that much. Still for a DIII team, the schedule is brutal. I don't see very many DIII teams with that loaded of a schedule. They are starting a freshman pitcher....interesting year!

Cincinnati Reading 6 North Bend Taylor 1

Freshman starting pitcher Slusher gets the win. I have not seen her pitch but the word is she is pretty good. Nice form but the speed is not their just yet. I think Coach Day beefed up the schedule for her, to get her better. The word around town is she is going to be better than Erin Dickman, a 2007 First Team All-State selection. I don't know, time will tell. I do know the Slusher freshman is from Reading and not an open enrollment student...

So it was 6-0 MND?

How did the freshman girl do starting at pitcher?
Well at least MND didn't run rule Reading. Great competition, but seriously MND is much better off athletically then Reading. It is great to see the two schools welcoming each other since they are right across the street from one another and MND calls Reading home. Softball is probably the only sport they compete at I would say. MND would blow them away in volleyball or basketball.

That's getting a little crazy. Dickman was a stud from day one...no one was saying "nice form but the speed is not there just yet" about her. Nothing against Slusher, I'm sure she'll be good...but Dickman was one of those pitchers that only comes around every now and then. Her battles with Brookbank from DP were epic.

I watched Erin Dickman throw the ball her freshman year, and she didn't get really good until her junior and senior year...the season record book at Reading don't lie! Plus, if Brookbank never would of hurt her knee, she would of bested Dickman the second time they played their senior year too as Deer Park shut out Reading the first game of their senior year, I think like 4-0. I am just quoting what I have heard around town about the new freshman pitcher.

I'm not sure what season records you're talking about, but I'm willing to bet Slusher's stats this season will not match those of Erin's freshman year. I haven't seen Slusher yet, but I've talked with parents and players from both Reading and Taylor. The Reading parent and player chuckled when I mentioned the comparison (Mike Day thought Dana Daley was the second coming too :) ), and the Taylor parent thought she was good, but nothing special. Dickman was a great pitcher all four years in high school. Of course she was better in her junior and senior seasons...most players are. Not saying Slusher won't be special, just saying its a little crazy to invoke the Dickman comparison just yet.

No offense to the frosh and it was 2 years (and training later I'm sure) ago BUT back then, I witnessed her pitching balls that kept nailing girls left and right, making them take 1st in the process. When a pitcher repeatedly hits batters, are they not supposed to remove the pitcher? (I don't really know a whole lot about fastpitch softball is why I'm asking.) So she has her control thing down now? I don't know, because I haven't watched her in action lately.

Daley was not a big K pitcher, she was all about locaton. You could count the hit batters from her on one hand. I watched Slusher pitch a little against Taylor and she is faster than Daley. The control is another story, but I am looking forward to watching her the next 4 years.

Where did Erin go to college? Is she playing still?

Erin goes to Thomas More. She was injured in summer ball after her senior year at Reading. She didn't play ball at STM until this spring. She went with them on their road trip to Florida and did some pitching while one of their pitchers/bball players (Dana Bors) was still playing bball for STM. I don't think she intends to keep playing now that Bors is back, but who knows. Great competitor...and I also think Slusher will be a good pitcher...just not in the same league as Erin. Just my opinion...

You should remove them if you have another pitcher. Unfortunately, most teams have a number 1 pitcher who does most of the pitching. It's a luxury to have two good pitchers. (Madeira, are you listening? :) ) The second pitcher might have been worse...you never know.

Me too, hopefully there will be a little competition for Madeira this year.

Lady Devils drop two to GGCL powerhouse Badin. Slusher pitched the 6-2 loss while Reyes pitched the 11-1 loss. Slusher rebounds with a 10k's performance in defeating Taylor 3-1 keeping Reading undefeated in league play. Bring on Madeira!

Aren't Indian Hill and Deerpark good softball teams? I thought they usually field decent teams is why I ask.

Not bad teams. DP is always pretty good and IH is having a decent season for a change. I think Reading expected to beat them both rather handily, though.

What exactly is so BRUTAL about that schedule? Is there even one team listed there that is (or has been recently) in the state ranked top 10???

Traditionally there are only a handful of teams in the Cincinnati area who are considered brutal opponents. If any of the teams on that list played in the GWOC they might not win a game. Unless it was against Trotwood.

Scheduling MND and Kings (larger schools), and CNE a good D3 team (probably the #1 D3 seed) was a bold move, but you're right...the schedule is far from brutal.

Sportsster57 I agree that Kings and MND are larger schools but size alone is not as big a deal as everyone makes it in my opinion. Every week I see smaller schools beating bigger schools and it really comes down to what type of players you have. If a smaller school has 6 or 7 nice players then they can play with anyone. Just because a school is bigger does not automatically mean that they have better talent. Just a potentially bigger pool to draw from. Each team can only start nine, so if you have nine good ones......then what difference does size really make?

I agree. That's why I only mentioned MND and Kings. They are the only really competitive larger schools Reading played. In fact, the CHL has four Div II teams (Finneytown, IH, Wyoming and Taylor) in sb, none of them very good. The CHL teams regularly beat the less competitive Div I teams.

I don't agree...I think the schedule is brutal, especially for having such a young team...When you are the smallest school in the CHL and you schedule 5 (only played 4) GGCL teams, plus play schools that are always bigger than you then you have a brutal schedule...by far the toughest in the league...GGCL schools players come from all over the city regardless of location where reading players all come from reading despite having open enrollment...the girls from the GGCL are usually better athletes because they have the money to play summer ball...I never said the Reading schedule IS BRUTAL FOR EVERY SCHOOL, just really for brutal for them. Think things through before you get defensive!

I don't think anyone got defensive (except maybe you) No one really commented on the schedule until it became evident that a lot of the teams they played weren't as good as you originally thought. Bacon, Seton and Ursuline do not rise to the level of brutal. I gave them props for MND, Kings and CNE. They played some good teams, but definitely not brutal. They're a decent young team...nothing better, nothing worse. That's not a put down...
