Central Catholic League thoughts for 2022?

What are everyone’s thoughts this week?
-I’m kind of surprised how far Hartley has fallen in some peoples “D4” rankings. Losing big to one of the best D2 teams in the state doesn’t mean that they should be ranked below a lot of these programs i’m seeing above them.
- DeSales has a HUGE challenge against one of the best D3 teams. Badin has lost a lot so it may be a winnable game that could springboard them in to state level D2 convos
-if Watty gets a W this week they may be looking at a 6-0 start. I’ve said it before but this is smart scheduling on Watterson’s part. Builds confidence and excitement
Badin lost 26 seniors from last year so not the same group. That said, still a lot of numbers and talented kids for D3 program. I expect a close game for Desales.

Hartley is very good. They had a terrible open vs a good team. I expect a bounce back.

This is a big week for Watty IMO. DS is a beatable team but also has plenty of quality players, a wide open offense and experienced coaches. A W will go a long way with their mental too! GO Eagles!

Hartley is not an August team under the Sawyer scheme. The tight formations, movements, and snap counts are complicated. Takes a few weeks for the line to really gel. Especially after losing a critical leader. They'll be fine. With one game in, adjustments will be made. Little wood doesn't have the same efficiency in the real games like he did in 7v7.

Nut was a strong physical team with good discipline who capitalized on early mistakes. That's the recipe.

Last year the Warriors were a one-man JJ show, but Prep will still be a tough out. MSL threw them out for a reason. Good size and speed matchup.

I think Hawks are like 1-5 or so in openers the last few seasons and 6-0 in week2 games. Not sure that continues this week, but progress isn't always measured in how you do against them. Sometimes it's in how you improve against you.

Rough night for a few CCL teams, besides the Mighty Bishop Watterson.

Hartley loses again, this time to a DV team, they should beat Canal Winchester next week.

Desales goes on the road and loses to a very good Badin team 27-14. The Stallions will bounce back next week at home vs Berea-Midpark at team that has given up 76 pts in two weeks.

St. Charles after putting up 48 pts vs a city league team, gets shut out by a OCC team 17-0 at Delaware Hayes. I think St. Charles will bounce back and beat a bad Amanda team who has given up 91 pts in two games so far.

Watterson- Big big win over a OCC team that had high expectations coming into the year, but currently sits at 0-2. Great job by the Eagles on the 17-0 shutout victory over the Irish, Ohio Dominican was packed. Look for Watterson to take care of Bishop Ready next week, the Eagles schedule isn't that tough this year.

Walsh Jesuit 49
Desales 7
It was 42-0 at half time, ouch!

Washington C.H. 50
St. Charles 21

Watterson 52
Whitehall 6

Bishop Ready 49
Academy 21

Next week will be very interesting. Can St Chuck’s keep it close with Watty? Can DeSales turn it around? I still think DeSales and Hartley are the 2 best in this league but that may be simply because I look at it as “prove they aren’t”. Both Hartley and DeSales have had very strong schedules while Watterson definitely has not. Not criticizing Watty because I think they are scheduling smart considering where they are as a program….looking to rebound and build

I think your stance is fair. "prove they aren't" . I went last night and what I will say is Watterson defense is on a different level then last 5-6 years of Watty Def. Our LB's fly. They look more like big safeties then LB a lot of the time which is so helpful in todays spread game. LB's #6 (Purcell) and # 24 (Weber) close so quickly on outside runs. Cool to see. Watterson DB's are fast and smart. Safeties are 6'1 (Bauer) and 6'4 (Rudzinski) with speed so that helps on deep stuff.

What will need to be tested is the Offense. With #7 (AJ) throwing the ball the last 7 quarters, it has opened up to #27 (trout) and Rudzinski as receivers. I was expecting a closer game last night as Whitehall only lost by 10 to Granville. what I saw was pure dominance.

I know there's going to be other things to talk about regarding the wild Watterson game and the Stallions' big road win, but one other big story (and not in a good way) for the CCL tonight is St. Charles is likely eliminated from playoff contention (according to Drew Pasteur) due to them losing a bizarre game to Logan.

That's a bad loss for St. Chucks.

What was bizarre about it?

From what I heard they got bricked on a goal line stand late in the 4th quarter, down 21-20. That score held.

I don’t have all the details as to what happened in what sequence there. I did hear Logan got up 21-7 right after halftime.

Son was there. Said SC went for 2 and didn't get it.

Big Week! Can Watterson prove they’re real? This should be a great game. Also…when is the last time D4 Hartley had a losing record? Could they be battling Ready for a playoff spot?

Well it will be a huge match up none the less. Winner likely CCL champ.

For Desales, a loss to Watterson would really hurt for playoffs seeding as they play central catholic last game and looks like they would be an underdog. a 5-5 record would likely draw a 14-16 seed probably gets either Big Walnut, Massillon or Westerville South.

For Watterson, a win here might get them in top 4 in R11 and secure 2 homes.

I have no idea what to think of this game. Both have great Def. Watterson switches from run/pass by series where Desales is basically a run team.

Pasteur, a man much smarter than me, seems to think DeSales is most likely a 5-9 seed even if they lose to Watty….which he predicts Watty to win by 5

If they beat central catholic that might be true. I think they would be an underdog in that game but IDK. But maybe they wouldn't fall as low as i predicted. Maybe between 9-11??

I’m not sure who you’re talking about? DeSales has a non OHSAA game week 9 and then Broad Street. Are you accidentally looking at Toledo DeSales?

He’s good but I wouldn’t say he’s better
Not sure about better. Might depend on team they are playing as I saw highlights. The freshman is super fast but 5-10 170., Against Watterson I wouldn't think that would be as good as watty is fast in def back 7 (have only allowed 1 run over 33 yards all season). What watty seems to be more susceptible to is inside dives. Granville ran their RB 35 times all between tackles at 4.5 yards per pop. Hubbard is 6-0 195 so I would think he is better suited for that work.
