The first Friday night of the season was off to a promising start for the TVS Panthers as they found themselves ahead of the Carlisle Indians 7-6 at the end of the 1st quarter of play. But the Indians adjusted on both offense and defense to move ahead in the 2nd quarter and quickly putthe game out of reach. It was 52-7 at the final whistle.
Neither offense was effective out ofthe gate. Although both teams were able to move the ball, they werenot able to put together a consistent drive in the 1st quarter. So it was up to the respective defenses to score. After asack by Indian Chase Laughlin, on the next play Ashton Pelfry snaggeda TVS pass and raced 60 yards for the opening score of the game. Not to be outdone, South's Griff Roell also had a pick 6 where he returned the pass from midfield for the score. South made their extra point, while Carlisle missed theirs and so South had the lead at the end of the quarter.
Carlisle had a bigger team – biggerin size and in depth. And this size began to make a difference asthe Carlisle running game began to churn up the real estate. Carlisle's 1st offensive score was a 12 yard run by Blake Lawson on a 4th and 3 play. A quarterback keeper was good and the score was 14-7. After holding South to a 3 and out, again it was Lawson who scored on a 18 yard run.
The wheels really began to fall off thecart on South's next possession. The Indian defense struck again. This time Ethan Hamm picked off a pass and ran it in from about the 20 yard line for yet another score. Towards the end of the half, South made it to the redzone on a catch by Griff Roell from Caden Bishop. But the stubborn Carlisle defense made a stand as JacksonMcIntosh got a sack to put South into long yardage. Then Blake Lawson ended the threat when he intercepted the ball.
Carlisle quickly moved the ball downthe field and scored right before halftime. Quarterback KolbyMorgerson called his own number and scored from 18 yards out. This made the halftime score 35-7 in favor of Carlisle.
Lawson scored again after halftime on a17 yard run. Eli Komnenovich set up the next score with an interception at midfield. Then it was Jeremy Hamm who ran the ball in from the 8 yard line for the TD.
Drew Conger ended Carlisle scoring with a 41 yard field goal towards the end of the 4thquarter.
Next week Carlisle travels to MiamiEast while TVS hosts Arcanum.
