Canton McKinley Football 2024

It is what it is, go back to the last five coaches and staff and what's so different?Nothing it may be worse in someways, its the kids not getting it at the very lower level that would be a start...BAM!

The hurricane is getting close to us where I live in Florida. Yikes! McKinley needs to play a clean game and play like a hurricane.

One has to get back to the Brian Cross coaching years to witness a well-disciplined Bulldog football team. Coach Cross was a strict disciplinarian, which many parents didn't care for, because their kid wasn't being showcased. There's been a lot of solid well thought-out and rational posts on this thread the past several days, excluding the MassiLOONs. Suffice to say, nevertheless, that not many folks have strong confidence in HC Hall.

JAF, With all due respect, haven't you also posted on these pages your thoughts regarding the lack of discipline by our team? As I do not recall anyone calling for a mid season personnel replacement, please enlighten me given that this is our Head Coach's FOURTH Year on the job. Thank you, sam
While I've made comments about the need to reduce the number of penalties, I've not said anything specifically about lack of discipline or the coaching. I also didn't anyone said anything about mid-season personnel replacement, I said "the perpetual mid-season complaints [about the coach] do no good."

I live in St Petersburg,we kept losing power alot. And had storm surge and palm trees breaking in half. But I am alright.

Hey McKinley fans in Canton and near Canton how is your weather? Is there alot of rain? A little rain? Thank you.

Good Job PUPS on a hard earned win over GREEN 26-17 on Friday night. Our players are a tough and resilient group of athletes who should be successful on the field and in life.

Our coaches, on the other hand, are the worst bunch of inept stumble bums imaginable. They show very little leadership and teaching ability. If they had an ounce of integrity, they would submit letters of resignation now for the end of the season.

I can not find an OFFICIAL log of the penalties, so I am using my own UNOFFICIAL STATS. From my notes during the game, I counted 13 penalties for approx 115 yards. The penalties breakdown as:

=THREE Personal Fouls (Roughing the Kicker, Dead Ball Fouls on Defense and Offense.)

- Four Defensive OFFSIDES.

-TWO HOLDING calls (one each for the Defense and the Offense.)

- Two Offensive Delay of Game.

- One Offensive False Start.

- One Pass Interference.

To be fair, there is always going to be penalties in a contact sport like football. However, one must separate between Physical AND Mental Errors. There should be no place on our team for Mental Errors. It is a matter of GOOD Coaching.

This is the FOURTH Year for our Head Coach. The above performance should not be acceptable to McKinley fans. We should expect to see better progress and leadership by now.

Good luck to all. Go PUPS against Hoover at Fawcett next Friday. sam

Hi McK, Please let me count some of the many ways that it was disgusting:

1. Two Extra Point Attempts failed

2. One short chip shot Field Goal failed.

3. Our Defense does NOT set up quickly. We just nonchalantly mosey over to the ball.

4. Our Offense is back to primarily pounding the ball up the middle.

5. We are using a THREE Man Defense Front - it is just that our defensive backs appear to not know where to line up.

6. Our coaching staff has turned McKinley into a careless, sloppy, undisciplined, brawling, lack of progression, rag tag outfit.

7. Do we really want to give this collection of "ROOKIES" another FIFTH Year to learn how to coach a top quality football team.

In summary, we need better leadership!

Good luck to all. Go PUPS! sam

Hall has had most of these kids for four years. He has not improved as a coach and you can tell by the lack of discipline of his teams. This is a COACHING problem. This team should be a rolling machine with so much talent.

McK, I fear what a FIFTH Year under this Head Coach would look like. Eventually, he may turn into a good coach. Unfortunately, he is going to do a lot of damage in the meantime. The kids on the team deserve better.

WHY do I care? Because at one time I was one of those kids on the field, and football was my way out of poverty. I would like to see other kids have the same chance of opportunity which I had.

Good luck to all. GO PUPS! sam

spyros I now just assume McKinley will have somewhere between 8 to 15 penalties a game and that's just who McKinley is. It helps with anger management. 😁 I use the same philosophy with the Indians ooops I mean Guardians, Browns and Dallas.

Hi Caleb, Thank you for your kind words. I believe your heart is in the right place. If I had half a brain, I would follow your advice.

Here is my problem - the lack of discipline hurts our players in so many ways. I remember:

1. Woody Hayes (OSU) refusing to come to Fawcett Stadium to recruit players due to our bad reputations.

2. The Federal League Office threatening punitive action against McKinley unless our players changed their on field behavior. (H.C. Todd Filtz was fired.)

3. Last year's McK - Mass melee at game's end.

The fact is that an undisciplined team hurts players in so many ways. Our current HC does nobody a favor by condoning such behavior. Our players deserve better from our coaches.

Good luck to all. GO PUPS! sam

If I am not mistaken, the last heavy recruiting by Ohio State's Woody Haves, pertaining to Canton McKinley football players, occurred in the mid-late 1960s, with Bulldog players such as, Nick Roman, Jim Roman and Rocco Rich. There were a few in the 1990s, such as Peterson and Martin, but over the past 25 years not much to talk about. Hmmm.

I've posted this comment before.... if Hall and his coaching staff oversee another melee, and the Superintendent and BOE don't make coaching changes, then just down the program indefinitely.

Ohiocrew, Thanks for the memories:

Nick and Jim Roman were cousins... class of '65.... played for HC Don Nehlen in his only year at McKinley.... I was a Freshman.

When I was a Senior, Rocco Rich was a SOPH.... we were both Varsity Starters for HC Ron Chismar.

A very long time ago! Good luck to all. GO PUPS! sam

The 1966 game was the 1st McKinley/Massillon game. I remember it well. The 1966, 67, 68 and 69 games I still look back on. lol

Hi Caleb, Thank you for sharing... I wish to be careful here of what I say... 1965, '66, '67 were my years at Fawcett... we were treated like Kings... full 6 foot double wide steel lockers... carpeted floors... a juke box... separate tape room... daily clean "whites" (clothing) ... whirlpool soaking tub... hot water... orange juice table... 15 to 20,000 cheering fans per game... who could ask for more?

It was a "tough" experience to go through, but it was so worth it to make it out onto the other side.

Good luck to all. GO PUPS! sam

Canton McKinley welcomes NC Hoover to Fawcett this friday. The Pups defense should be the difference in a close hard hitting game.

Lets go Pups...Lets go Pups...Lets go Pups!!!

spyros1950, you played on some outstanding Bulldog teams...state championship caliber, especially following your time on the varsity, the years 1968 and 1969.

Ohiocrew, Thanks! It was a much different time back then. The coaches were No Nonsense individuals who accepted No Excuses. You either did your job, or they called you out and found somebody who could.

I still remember both Head Coaches, Nehlen and Chismar, walking the halls of McKinley saying, "I'm Crazy, You Crazy? You have to be CRAZY to play this game!"

As players, you were always wide awake and on your toes. And, that was all year round.

Good luck to all. GO PUPS! sam
