This guy (CWEagle) wrote a nice piece on the CC/DLS game...His school is a common opponent.
Clovis West has experience with DLS and CC........
and, this will be an interesting match-up. Though CW has played CC 5 times and lost 4, this year, I thought CC was beatable. CW went into that game without Jelmini, a true difference maker from the ball control standpoint, and lost by a touchdown at CC. Unless the defense has improved drastically, CC will have a tough time limiting the DLS offense.
CW has not played DLS for two years, but, some things about that program never change. DLS supporters will insist that they were "down" for a couple of years (what ever that means) and were not playing up to the DLS standard of excellence. Whatever. Both years were very successful and, for what it's worth, ALL high school teams experience personnel turnovers on an annual basis.
DLS operates like a very well-oiled machine. The kids are very strong and work weights year-round like none other. They believe in their system, their coach, and each other. They are also very quick. Almost impossible to replicate their offense in practice. Even when you know what they intend to do, they do it anyway. In terms of fundamentals, they approach perfection.
CC operates the best spread I've seen in high school. Probably the most explosive offense around. Scott and Bass have a way of making defenses pay when they make any mistakes at all. If a defence guesses wrong, it's too late.....TD. I don't know how they draw up plays but, it almost reminds me of Hawaii. The receivers seem to adjust to the dbs mid-route and Scott seems to find them or, break off big runs. DLSs' quickness may hurt them and expose them to big plays if they react too quickly. By the same token, CC has probably not seen a defense as quick as DLS's since the CW game.
Both teams are extremely well-coached. And, though Lad has been accused of walking on water, I think the CC kids have every bit as much confidence in their coach and system. Neither team has played the toughest of schedules but, they have smashed everyone in their way (except MD on the CC schedule) and that's all you can ask.
As always, it will come down to preparation, execution, and adjustments. I would expect both teams to move the ball and have difficulty on the defensive side. It may well come down to special teams play or a crucial turnover. In my opnion, a DLS vs CC match-up favors DLS by 10.
