Big Ten Basketball 2024-2025 Season

So in your philosophy, if you cheer for a team you have to cheer for the entire conference they play in? Wtf kind of rationale is that? Like I give a crap what Rutgers and Iowa do on a game-to-game basis

Lots of rationale for it in my opinion. I root local more than I root for some team I've never seen and have no hope to see in person. Conference contains my team's wins. The better they look, the better my team looks. Conference is more likely to contain local players.

Might be a product of being a fan of a smaller conference team that I grew up with.

It's kind of funny thinking about it. I'll root for my alma-mater (B10) over most teams. But the team I grew up with (Toledo), I'll root for them over my alma-mater in most cases. I'd root for Toledo over the big three, Ohio St, UM, ND, unless something important was on the line not available to Toledo, like an chance an NC. I was rooting for Northern Illinois. a conference member, over ND.

Ok you’re a Toledo fan. Does that mean you cared that BG beat Taylor? No way

Whatever, I don’t like them but they are a necessary evil to cheer for if you want OSU to be good.

I get what you are saying, but here is my view.

I want OSU to be very good. Let's imagine they are, and they go something like 26-7 this year. The only reason to care about the results of a game like Michigan vs. Wake Forest is that it helps improve OSU's strength of schedule, by the tiniest fraction. Is it enough to make the difference between a 2-seed and a 3-seed in the tourney? Probably not.

I'd rather see Michigan lose. Repeatedly. Hopefully in heartbreaking fashion.

Yes you're correct. The results are small but they do add up and every game counts. The Big Ten has an even worse view about it in basketball vs football and I hate ACC basketball. ACC Basketball is SEC football in terms of my hate level.

Yes, I did. As I rooted for them against Penn St and Texas A&M. You'd be right to say to a point. Once they beat Toledo, then maybe not so hard rooting for them, lol.

And I rooted Indiana to beat former P10 and pretty much anyone but Purdue or Ohio St.

Who wants to brag about beating weak teams? It makes sense to me to root for the competition.

The MAC is a one bid league. It really doesn’t matter

Anecdotally, no Toledo fan should be rooting for BGSUcks under any circumstances. ;)

Don’t know how Michigan State is hanging around in this one but they look god awful. Doesn’t make sense for them to still be in this event since they aren’t a blue blood and are really not all that close to being one. UCONN should be inserted into their place.

As a Big Ten fan I’m ready for Tom Izzo to be fired/retire. No coach brings more shame to the conference continually losing to the big dogs than him. He’s the Ryan Day of Big Ten basketball.

I haven't decided if he's lost weight or just surrounded by bigger guys now.

The year's Boilers have a lot of newer parts. Players most likely to have moved up in playing time seem to have gotten supplanted. Covlin, probably as athletic as Ivey but in comes Big Dog's boy who didn't get the height gene and is playing combo. Two former Mr Basketball centers (which at Purdue translates to forward, lol) but in come the Ohio kid from Sycamore, they decided not to redshirt. Edey's heir apparent apparently too short at 7'3" so the 7'4" Fr from Chicago is starting. Too frail IMO, he should redshirt. Got hurt nearly first play against a real center.

Painter openly states he hates players doing all the practices and not getting game time. With Smith and Loyer keeping their time even in blow-out, the rest of the time gets spread thin. I doubt we keep Colvin (who did get decent time) and Heidy (who didn't), the most athletic parts of the team. They both could easily find a high P5 needing their skills.
Officially, Purdue had Edey listed at 7'4" and 300 lbs, this year Memphis has him listed a 7'4" 305

Michigan State is the Pittsburgh Steelers of college basketball. They've had two men's basketball coaches since 1976. Jud Heathcoat for 19 years, and Izzo since. Izzo has a unique style where he's rarely blessed with NBA type players, he gets grinders and physical players and has always been pretty competitive. I respect them because they play anyone anytime, traditionally have one of the toughest schedules and normally get better as the season goes on. He is a whiner and his teams have underperformed at times.

His teams don’t win the big games out of conference or against the blue bloods in the NCAAs. Time to move on from him and find somebody who can elevate that program to what they were in the late 90s/early 00s. Those teams had NBA guys and won big games

Izzo will decide when he's done. There is no way they are going to fire him. Heck he'd fire the President of the University before it would be the other way around. And my guess is Michigan State never becomes what it was back then. I don't see that school as big NIL type school either. The have to grow and develop players. Best NBA player from Michigan State not named Magic Johnson?? Draymond Green. He's a hall of famer, many will be surprised by this. The does all the "other" things that make a team successful. Don't like him but he's that guy you want on your team and hate him on others. His day to day intensity has supported Golden State for years.

Then they will continue to be stuck in a purgatory of never being good enough to win it all and not bad enough to warrant firing. They’ve been lucky to make the NCAAs some of the last few seasons.

Also, I would take Jason Richardson, Morris Peterson, and Shannon Brown over Draymond.

Draymond is a winner. He's a winning kind of player. I think he has a good shot at getting in. The NFL and NBA use some of those intangibles rather than raw stats to evaluate players.
I'm not for or against Michigan State, I'm just saying Izzo will call his shot.

No doubt he’s a winner but it helps a lot to be playing alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Made him look a lot better than he is. All the players I just mentioned are better than him

I admit, I did not see that coming. No way did I have Purdue over Alabama. 56% from 3pt even with Braden Smith going 0 for 4? Definitely did not see that coming.
I’ll take it. Conference needed that one badly and now we have a big win against the SEC. Purdue just gets it done out of conference every year. Thank God for them.

Penn State currently pounding Virginia Tech. Penn State is looking like a sleeper in this conference, they have alot of length.
