Best Coach?

The top two coaches in Cincinnati, and two of the best coaches in the state are Tom Kennedy (Moeller) and Pat Collura (St. Xavier), bar none.

To not include Dave Reed is absurd.

Nearly every player in Cincy has had some kind of association with Dave Reed through various All-Star/NDP teams, and everyone of them can tell you how dedicated and insightful the man is.

He was offered the Moeller coaching spot after their old coach left, but turned down the offer to continue helping Lakota West grow. He's also the UC club coach (which just like Lakota West lacrosse, he started), which is taking turns into become a varsity sport, much like girls lacrosse there.

Agreed.

Valid points however, he doesn't have any state rings on his fingers, and he has not put Lakota West on the state map yet. West's schedule does not include the best of the best year in and year out and West has not moved above the middle of the pack in Cincinnati in the last five year. Don't get me wrong he is a great guy and good teacher of the game, but not a great coach.

no, coach collura doesnt have a state ring, but he can say he has beaten Upper Arlington. Not many coaches in ohio can say that theyve beaten UA, i think that this best coach award should go to Tom Kennedy though. The guy has done alot in previous years as a coach and is starting to build the Moe Lacrosse Program into a state contender yearly. This says alot because of how poor the program was, under the previous coach. The kids in the program want to work hard for coach Kennedy, this is why they are consistantly winning.
As for Coach Reed, yeah...one could say he is affliated with alot of different players all throughout cincy, but that really doesnt mean much. Someone who doesnt really know much about lacrosse could just go start up a programs at different places. One thing that i think coach Reed lacks is discipline with his players. Not so much as doing what they are told, but discipline in his players stick skills. His players tend to throw side arm alot, and do not have that disciplined of throwing habits.
Now best coach in the state, easily goes to WRA's coach (Skip Flanagan) or UA's coach (Ted Wolford). Both coaches are very accomplished and very well known in the lacrosse world

It is not what Coach Kennedy is doing now with Moeller that makes him the best and most accomplished coach but what he did in his first tenure as head coach of the program. He won back to back state championships and a midwest title and was always in the running the years they didn't win. He did this in 92 and 93 when the program started in 88. So he turned moeller into a successful program very quickly.

Another point though, not to take away from Kennedy or Collura, to be a good coach you have to have good players. Coach Reed or Coach Nugent could probably do a good job at a school like Moeller or X. The fact is that the sport has caught on quicker in those schools than their current schools they coach. They are constantly trying to get the program started that it is impossible to know how well they could do with an already established program where their knowledge of the game could reach its potential.

Nugent of Syc?

Isn't this the guy who moves varsity players down to JV just to win a game? Or (to be accurate) to try to win a game?

Just heard Sycamore moved at least 3 varsity players down to JV to try to beat X. Sycamore has plenty of JV players.
They do the same thing between JV and the Developmental team. Don't even bother to try and hide the fact, they cheerfully admit it.

I don't know, how bad do you "need" to win a Developmental game? :Ohno:

It hasn't "caught" on with Lakota West not due to Reed, but the AD.

Lacrosse, simply put, is strongly discouraged by baseball and football coaches at West. It's worse than any of you can imagine, and it's a miracle there's even a team at all.

Marc Brogden was going to play lacrosse for West this year, but quit when he was told "if you play lacrosse, you'll never play D1 football".

And I guess that moving a team from D3, to D2 the next year, to D1b the next year, and then finally into D1 and still being competitive doesn't mean progress?

:Ohno:
