2024 Cincinnati Reds Season Recap: Progress and Promise

Onto the outfield.
This was easily the weak spot of the team. You started the season with Friedl hurt, Steer, Fraley, Martini, Benson and Fairchild. Injury and ineffectiveness really just stunted this group the entire season. Outfield are positions that you hope to get alot of offense from, especially the corner outfielders. Fraley hit for a high average at .277, but only 5 homers. Your most productive outfield, Spencer Steer, played more first base than anywhere else.
So while you have some nice pieces, the majority of our outfielders are more backup type players.

Ok sorry, it's been a few days, let's look at the starting pitching in 2024.
As a group, this was the best facet of the team in 2024, and it was really a group effort. The Reds used 16 different players to start games this season on the mound. That's pretty astonishing. Hunter Greene (26), Andrew Abbott (25) Nick Lodolo (21) and Frankie Motas (19) led the way. However as we know, only Greene had a start in September. But even when the core of the regular starters got hurt and couldn't pitch late in the year, there seemed to be little dropoff. Nick Martinez was the NL pitcher of the month in September and held the staff together down the stretch along with 2023 pick Rhett Loweder.
For most of the Reds starters in 2024, you could point to some good times and bad.
Hunter Greene has proven to be a bona fide #1 starter, which we were never sure we'd get here, but here we are. Frankie Montas never did what we'd hope he'd do. He was at best our #3 starter and probably be #4 to be honest, and for what he was getting paid, it didn't work.
Nick Lodolo, Oh Nick Lodolo. His ceiling is Cy Young stuff, his floor is a journeyman. If we can ever figure out a way to keep him on the mound.
Andrew Abbott I've said is the glue guy of the staff. He's not going to blow people away, but he's rock solid and can be counted on every 5th day to start. Graham Ashcraft, again a question mark because of health. He's been good at times but not consistently.
I'll be honest, I didn't want to force Rhett Lowder up too fast. He took the league by storm having great start after great start. To me, as of today, he's our #2 starter.
So going into 2025, my rotation is Greene, Lowder, Lodolo, Abbott and if we could bring him back, Nick Martinez. My guess is he'll get a better offer from someone else. So then you have Carson Spires, Ashcraft or Junis. At this point I've seen enough of Carson Spires and I can move off him. Also think that there may be an opportunity for this years draftee Chase Burns to make an appearance.
Simply put the Reds wasted a pretty good year of starting pitching. The starting pitching this season was playoff caliber. Let's hope there is little backsliding.

Never apologize for not posting for a few days. It is like Christmas for the rest of us. Not reading this wall of text, I know it is either all painfully obvious or 100% wrong.

Hey, someone has to try to educate some of you guys, as difficult as that may be.

Ok other than wolves, who doesn't have anything better to do than be critical of message board posters...I'll keep this going with the final piece, the 2024 bullpen. Other than a few guys here and there, the bullpen stayed relatively healthy and Bell turned to the same guys over and over most of the season. Appearance wise, Fernando Cruz (69), Buck Farmer (61), Alexis Diaz (60), Justin Wilson (60), Sam Moll (48), Brent Suter (47), Lucas Sims (43) led the way. Although Cruz seemed to tire as the season went on, there was some talk about him being added to the NL all star team because he was so good the first half of the season. Buck Famer seems to be the guy that gets alot of eye rolls and such, but he had an incredibly solid year lead the relief corp with 71 innings. Alexis Diaz was Alexiz Diaz.
So this was back to back years that the Reds had a pretty good bullpen.

Reds bullpen 2024.
- 4.09 ERA - 17th best in the MLB
- 1.28 WHIP - 17th best in the MLB
- Earned Runs = 274 - 20th best in MLB
- HRs allowed = 80 - 24th best in MLB

Certain sports writer wanna-be's think that is a "pretty good bullpen". Realistic people like me would call it below average. Just the facts...
