They were really good last year, with quite a few underclassmen. However, I believe many of them defected to other schools such as Cleveland Heights. I don’t know much else about them or if they happened to attract some newcomers based on last year‘s success.

Update-their 3 best returning players (all D1 Caliber) all transferred, 1 to Brush, 2 To Cle Heights (1 of these was Jamal Sumlin, who subsequently transferred to Ypsilanti Prep to play with phenom Emoni Bates). I’m guessing the cupboard is now pretty bare, but I seriously think it was the best team Jackson played Last year, even Better than Shaker Hts

Jamal Sumlin and Keyshawn Hall went to Cleveland Heights. As noted above, Sumlin has since moved on to Ypsilanti Prep. Amarion Dickerson is playing for Richmond Heights. I am not aware of any Rhodes players who are at Brush right now.

I am also under the impression that all winter sports at CMSD schools have been cancelled this year. I do not expect Rhodes to play against McKinley or any other school this season.

extra impressive without Walker again. Perry is solid team that has given McKinley fits past couple years with their style of play

--- Massillon State Runner-up
1993: 62~61 OHSAA Sectional
2003: 71~67 OHSAA District Final

- - - - -

* no regular season games in 1987 thru 1990 (4 seasons); what happened.
To understand what happened; up until Massillon built the new school next to
PBTS they were playing their games in their gym, with very limited seating
and while the floor size was regulation it was bordered by brick wall with
limited out-of-bounds space.

Late 1970's: Massillon had a home game scheduled against the Barberton Magics
led by Bodner twins; in anticipation of a huge following (not to mention the
gate - $$$) Massillon moved their home game to Canton's Civic Center.

(McKinley-Massillon basketball contracts were usually written for 2 or 4 years,
home and home, with 2 or 4 year renewal options)

Jump ahead to the mid-1980's. McKinley is loaded with a Gary Grant led team and
requested that Massillon move their home game to Canton's Civic Center to handle
the anticipated crowd; negotiations reached a stand still, the game was not moved
and McKinley did not renew the contract when it expired. There were 2 Tournament
games (1988 & 1990) in this time frame with McKinley winning both. The series
renewed once the Tigers completed the new school.

Tournament Showings
Massillon
08 - Sweet-16 (Dist-Champ)
03 - Final-4 **
----- 1937, 1940, 1945
01 - State Runner-up
----- 1937
00 - State Champions

McKinley
48 - Sweet-16 (Dist-Champ)
23 - Final-4
08 - State Runner-up
03 - State Champions

** McKinley and Massillon both advanced to the Final-4 in these 3 years.
The 1937 & 1940 tournament games required the 16 teams to play multiple
games each day to advance. Preliminary games were played on Friday with
Saturday for the Semis in the morning and the Title game later the same day.
Due to WW-II the OHSAA adopted the Regional format that we see today, so in
1945 each Classification advanced 4 teams to Columbus.

In 1937 Massillon (Paul Brown) defeated McKinley in the State Semis 33~28.
This was a 'rubber' match; the teams had split the regular season games,
McKinley (Reed) had won game-1 (36~29), game 2 went to Massillon (44~33).
Massillon fell to Hamilton in the Title game 37~32.

In 1940 McKinley (Rearick) defeated Massillon (Brown) in both regular season
games (30~20 & 40~38). The game in Columbus became so heated that the referees
stopped play and issued warnings to clean it up: "This isn't Stark County!"
Massillon finished the game short a player on the floor in the closing minute
of play falling to the Bulldogs 46~14. McK lost to New Philadelphia in the Title
game 30~22. (This was the first Championship game to feature undefeated teams)

1945: Both Bulldogs and Tigers Advanced to the Final-4; Massillon thru the Kent
Regional and McKinley via the Zanesville Regional. Alas the would not meet
in the Championship game as rivals lost in the Semi-finals. Massillon lost
to Bellevue 47~44 and McKinley lost their game to Middletown 29~28.
Bellevue won the Title over the Middies 36~34.

With the advent of the new District format starting in the 1950's; Massillon
would be playing in the same District as McKinley and future State-Level
match-ups would no longer happen.

I miss those games in the old Massillon gym. There was nothing like it. Also I think they need to go back to playing twice a season but that's just me. The other thing that people don't realize is how many total wins Massillon has. I know both schools have been around but still it's pretty impressive. Are they in the top 5 in wins around the state?

No. They are barely in the top 25. They're around 22, 23 or 24.
