So, pretty much the usual in the top 5... the BIG THREE from Cincy, Hilliard Darby and then a parochial from Cleveland (Iggy, Eds).

Crystal ball prediction: Westerville South will make their way into the top 3 of the state rankings at some point this year

WS starts off with the defending State Champs in a tri-match with St Charles tomorrow, so we'll see how they stand right off the bat.

We all know Elder tends to struggle early in the season before they put it all together come playoff time. Wouldn't be surprised if WS takes down the champs. WS's top 4 players are better than anyone else's top 4, it comes down to how well they fill/hide those other two spots on the court

Can't comment on how the match went, but Elder won in 3 despite missing a likely starter (either OH or OPP). Didn't think Elder looked great Thursday, but based on what everyone has said about WS in the preseason that's a good win.

Things I find interesting

St. Edward nowhere to be found in state poll. Probably the first time in awhile they have not been in the state top 10.

Westerville South ranked higher than Darby in the East region poll. I always give more credence to the regional polls when comparing teams because the coaches voting are more likely to have actually seen the teams.

Alter shockingly lost to both Northmont and Westerville South this weekend. The gulf in talent between Division 1 and Division 2 is quite large this year

St. Eds is very weak this year and may struggle to get out of the North.

W. South's big 4 might be the most dynamic group in the state and wouldn't be surprised if they beat Darby later this season.

Moeller will need to get points from their middles to win, but I don't know if either are good enough to carry them to a title. Bowles is a nice athlete, but I don't know if he is capable of carrying the load himself on the pin against the other top teams.

Darby's top end will be the best in the state by season's end IMO. They have athletes! This is the same team as last year minus the setter, and the kid they have plugged is a player.

I also think South has too many holes to beat Darby. The biggest is serve receive. Other than Woodson, they can't pass.

As long as they don't meet in the final 4, I see an Elder/Darby final.

Moeller has the best middle duo in the state, and just beat Darby in Chicago this past weekend. Who is setting for Darby? Is it not Lee?

I agree Moeller has best middle duo, but Darby has the best Middle.

The freshman was setting for Darby. I don't have the name but he set for Vanguard's 18-2's

I know Moeller just beat Darby in Chicago, but I''m telling as a Moeller fan something wasn't right with Darby.

Granted it's only been one week, here's my top 10:
1. Elder - defending state Champs, here until they get beat
2. St X - strong wins over Moe and Ignatius thus far, rely WAY too much on Pung
3. St Ignatius - played even with St X, all sets decided by 2 points
4. Moeller - based on their defeat of Darby, struggled in Chicago 2-3
5. Darby - see above, didn't get their record but assume they struggled as well
6. Lakota East - best team in GMC
7. Northmont - just beat Alter in 3 on Saturday
8. Westerville South - playing good teams tight but haven't broken through yet
9. Beavercreek - played Elder tight, they'll fight LE or Nmont for the 2nd West spot
10. LaSalle - older group for LS with lots of experience, wouldn't shock me to see them take a match from either Elder/Moeller/X this year

Westerville also beat Alter in 3 Saturday as well as beating Northmont in 3.

You're right, missed that one while going over the scores. Based on that, I would have Westerville South one spot ahead of Northmont.

Darby also went 2-3. Moeller 6th place in Silver Flight; Darby 7th place in Silver Flight. (via Twitter)
