2013 Swimming Season

Okay, practice has started. Who are the teams and swimmers to watch in 2013?

Can anyone unseat St. X in the state meet? Or is it a contest for second?

Will UA girls hold off Cin. Ursuline in the girls D1?

How about Hawken, are they the best girls team in Ohio?

Can University retain the D2 crown or will Oakwood win it?

What freshman will stand out?

Who will win each district meet? If the NW District is truly realigned for D1 can St.F still prevail? Will that effect their state performance?

Speaking of St.F what effect will their new coach have?

What are the big inseason meets to watch for?

Like always I'm very excited for the High School season. It will be interesting to see these next few weeks as many club teams will be competing in meets to see where everybody is at.

To answer a couple of your questions:

I don't think anybody is going to be St. X at the State meet this year. Again they might not have any individual champions, but their overall team is just too good.

Yes this is a boys forum but it will be interesting to see if Ursaline can beat the UA girls. I don't think Ursaline has any really good incoming freshmen and UA always seems to reload what they lost.

For the D2 meet Oakwood is going to be tough again. If they hadn't had that relay DQ'd at Districts they might have won last year. Should be fun to watch.

Hopefully all the teams you mentioned will be at the Big 8 meet and we can see what the teams have this season.

I don't know of too many Freshmen (will have to wait to see teams compete/rosters before we know who is where), but one that you should watch out for is Matt Slabe (sister Emily 2 time state champ). He went 4:48 in the 500 and he is at St. X and you know they crank out some good distance swimmers. Would be impressive for him to score at State his first season and he has a good chance to do that.

Another Freshmen that I jus thought of is Cooper Hodge and I'm pretty sure he is at Moeller. He swims for CAC year round and he is fast at just about whatever he swims. He will add some much needed depth to Moeller who has a strong team this year.

St. Francis should still win the NW District, but it will be a whole lot closer than in years past. The sprints will be loaded at the district meet, with the possibility of having all 8 swimmers in the 50 free making it to Canton.

St. Francis should be a factor in all 3 relays again. St. Francis has a lot of promising sophomores and juniors this year. They only have 4 seniors on the swim team. Coach Tony Kurth is bringing some fresh ideas and has a history of coaching some very fast swimmers, so everyone is excited about the possibilities of getting some individual swimmers to compete for state titles.

Will Erik Risolvato be swimming in high school his senior year? Rumors have circulated that he may not be swimming. Sure would love to see him push Mozov's national record.

"I don't think anybody is going to beat St. X at the State meet this year. Again they might not have any individual champions, but their overall team is just too good."

X has some swimmers who could be individual state champions this year. Ian Wooley in 100 Fly and 100 Back. Jack Hendricks in 500 Free. Grant Johnson in 50 or 100 free. Coach Brower and his staff prepares the team incredibly every year.

I said they might not have individual champions. I agree they have a lot of great opportunities to win.

Wooley in the 100 Fly and 100 Back look to be the closest shot for individual shots looking at last years results. He had some great Butterfly swims at Y Nationals and is going to be tough to beat in the 100 Fly.

Hendricks is going to have a tough time to be champ as Joey Long looks to be the favorite in the 200 and 500.

Those 3 swimmers are extremely good. They are very respected and highly thought of, but there will not be any tears shed in NW Ohio when those 3 graduate this year!!! Does St. X have any juniors or sophomores that are the same caliber of swimmer?

A few swimmers that may come forward and step up this year, Mitchell Frey (100 Fly and 100 Breast), Mike Montague (200 Free) and Kevin Mosko (500 Free).

I am sure there are others. We'll all be checking meet results as the season goes on. Big 8 Meet in Canton in mid-Dec should be interesting.

other swimmers to watch out for on st. x's team are Keinan Adams (100 breast/100fly) and Liam Morran(500). my friend Jim Brower said they were both training very hard and showing promise. however, even with st. x's depth, i dont think they should provide much of a challenge for moeller, especially after the strong showing they had at big 8/canton invitational. my sources said they left the st.x section speechless! i think this year will be the start of a moeller swimming dynasty, especially with reports that they will being construction of a pool on their fourth floor.

Look for Gates Mills Hawkens Girls' to be a heavy favorite in Girls D2. Results from last weeks Viking Meet showed depth and talent.
