2012 NW District

The D1 NW District just got much much faster. The Lakewood Sectional out of the NE has been moved to the NW for D1. Strongsville, St. Ignatius, and St. Edwards are now in the NW. I bet St. Francis is loving this.

Facinating news odeeps. What is your source for this as I have not seen anything from the OHSAA about it. However, with the revamping of the automatics last year, equalizing the number of teams in each district makes sense.

It is true that the NW District has changed to include the Sectional from Lakewood. Rumor has it that some schools were not real happy with the fact that the NW District had a super sectional last year, and a lot of swimmers did not have to swim in the sectional. The added teams will "balance" the districts a little better according to the people making this decision.

St. Francis should not be affected over the next few years, as they have a very good sophomore, junior, and senior class. But, there could be a problem for them in the future, as there is a drop in the number of male age group swimmers currently in the Toledo area.

The NW District will be loaded in the sprints this year!!!

This is interesting news. Although it makes sense by making the districts more even in the number of teams, is there a precedent for this? Presumably to move the teams into a different district for swimming requires action by the OHSAA. At least from what I can find there doesn't seem to be a public anouncement of this move. I'm not saying that it isn't true, but I am curious whether someone has seen an official announcement or has just heard "talk" which may or may not have a basis in fact.

It is a fact. The St. Francis swim and dive coaches have met with the "powers to be" and have been informed of the changes. It really will change in the diving more than swimming, as the Lakewood sectional had about as many divers as the entire NW district.

An interesting development. Should improve the Northwest District Meet. Will the meet still be held at BG or will they find a site closer to the Northeast teams, like Fremont Ross?

There is precedent for moving schools to a different district. In 1956 Fremont Ross swam in the Central District. And from 1932 through 1942 the Central Ohio schools swam in Cincinnati. During those years the qualifying meets for the State Meet (held at OSU in Columbus) happened in Cleveland, Cincinnati and Toledo. So shuffling schools around to balance out the district meets has happened before. Making the D1 meet in the Northwest District more competitive will strengthen swimming there and throughout the state.
