Cambridge Post 84 'walks-off' with Ed Breehl Sr. Tournament title

The Daily Jeffersonian

Cambridge Post 84's team proudly shows off the Ed Breehl Sr. American Legion Tournament championship trophy on Sunday afternoon at Tuscora Park in New Philadelphia. Post 84 rallied for a 7-6 walk-off win over the New Philadelphia Black Sox in the title game.

NEW PHILADELPHIA — Following Saturday's completion of the pool play round of the Ed Breehl Sr. American Legion Tournament, Cambridge Post 84 manager Ron Antill had a good feeling about his squad entering Sunday's Championship round.

"We have both our No. 1 pitcher Jake Valentine and our No.2, Blake Brumfield ready to go for tomorrow's championship round," Antill explained after Saturday's 12-7 win over Columbus Post 457. "Pretty sure nobody else can say that, so I have a good feeling about tomorrow."

Turns out Antill's feeling was correct, after his Post 84 squad picked up a pair victories to claim the tournament championship...but it wasn't easy.
Cambridge fell behind 6-0 after five innings to host New Philadelphia Black Sox in the championship game before mounting a big comeback.

Post 84 got back into the game with a huge five run rally in the bottom of the sixth to pull within 6-5 with Blake Brumfield, Andy Ogle, and Blade Barclay all collecting key RBIs.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Post 84 completed the exciting comeback with a pair of runs for the walk-off victory to claim the tournament title.

Brumfield picked up the win on the mound, allowing nine hits and six runs over seven innings, striking out four.

Brumfield also banged out three singles with three RBIs to lead the 12-hit Cambridge offense, with Bryce Murdock added a pair of base hits with an RBI. Caleb Bond and Gates Thompson each banged out two singles and Jake Valentine ripped a double.

In semi-final action Valentine turned in lights out performance to roll past Barnesville Post by a 12-2 final score in a five-inning mercy to earn a spot in the championship game.

Valentine was in complete control on the mound, as the talented righthander tossed a five-inning one-hitter allowing two runs, with just one earned. Valentine finished with eight Ks and five walks to pick up the victory.

Valentine also turned in an impressive day at the plate, turning in a 3-for-4 effort with a double, two singles and a whopping five RBIs. Thompson also picked up three hits, with a double, two singles with an RBI for Post 84.

Caleb Bond racked up a double, single with three RBIs, while Barclay stroked an triple, and Brumfield banged out an RBI double.
Cambridge wasted little time in taking control, putting up a four run first inning followed by two more in the second frame to take a 6-1 advantage. Post 84 would maintain the upper hand thanks to Valentine's effort on the mound to improve to 7-6.
