Ohio State at NCAAs

Prior to 2024, has a wrestler at NCAAs ever wrestled 5 matches without giving up a takedown and not win a title?
There are so few resources to actually get play-by-play on old matches. I went through some old brackets and found some possibles since 2008:

- 2014 Nick Heflin won via injury default in 1st round (guessing he wasn't taken down here), med. forfeit, 8-1, and 2-1 before a 2-1 finals loss to J'Den Cox.
- 2013 Matt Brown won 10-1, Pin, 13-5, and 3-2 before 2-1 loss to Chris Perry
- 2011 Ryan Flores is the first one that came to mind (I just knew Zach Rey wasn't taking anybody down in the finals).
- Craig Brester lost 2-1 in the finals to Varner in 2009. Wins of 10-3, 14-5, 2-0, and 7-2 indicate a possible no-takedown tourney.
- Coincidentally enough, Jake Varner probably did not get taken down in 2008, winning 6-0, Pin, 2-0, and 4-2 before a 3-3 UTB loss to Ohio State's Mike Pucillo

- Trent Hidlay got reversed by Aaron Brooks in 2021, but other than that was not taken down.
- Technically, Myles Martin didn't give up a takedown in 2018...he did get reversed and pinned by Bo Nickal in the finals.

Let's see the 2024-2025 OSU lineup predictions / comments / speculation on rankings & team achievements thread!
125 - Kilkeary/McCrone. I like McCrone a lot, but Kilkeary seems like the future
133 - Bouzakis - I would be surprised if we don't see a much improved and focused wrestler. AA caliber
141 - Mendez
149 - Can D'Emilio come back with the COVID year? If not, I don't see a quality replacement. Perhaps targeting the transfer portal?
157 - Paddy is back - I'm not sure what to expect from him.
165 - Hepner is back and quite frankly I thought he would be more impactful than what he was. Not sure what to think here
174 - Rocco!
184 - Rogotzke or Shumate - Would assume someone may hit the transfer portal
197 - Geog
285 - Feldman

Still a really young team, but will be fun to watch. Can see a run at a trophy

149 - D'Emilio is a R-Senior, leaves Brown, Herman, incoming freshman
149 / 157 - will Sasso be able to come back

Don't forget Ben Davino coming in as a freshman. He is ranked at 132 so not sure where he will compete to try and get in the lineup. Do Mendez and Bouzakis bump up next year?

D'Emilio has another year

2020- Redshirt, no eligibility used
2021- Covid year, no eligibility used
2022- Freshman year
2023- Sophomore year
2024- Junior year

Will be a large group of wrestlers from all over the country deciding on whether to use that last year.

Sasso will get another year if he wants it, I have serious doubts on his ability to wrestle at the D1 level. Same with Kharchla

Some other top teams this year and their 2025 outlook:

Cornell: Unsure because of Ivy league rules regarding eligibility. Cardenas and Foca may have to transfer ala Slavikouski from Harvard to Rutgers. Meyer Shapiro returns, as well as qualifiers Ungar, Fernandez, Cornella, and Ramirez.

Iowa State: Losing David Carr hurts, but Frost, Swiderski, and Echemendia all return,. as well as Yonger Bastida. Chittum and Gaitan are prime candidates to improve on their 2024 NCAA runs as well.

Michigan: Losing just about everybody, but a prime portal spot for many guys (Dean Hamiti already rumored to go there). Ragusin/Cam Amine return, Sergio Lemley had a rough NCAAs but did well in the regular season.

NC State: Everyone but Hidlay is back. Kai Orine/Ryan Jack are the AAs, Camacho/Ed Scott/Trephan/Arrington will be right there. This is a sneaky good team, and one I might pick to win a trophy.

Iowa State has Paniro (sp?) Johnson coming off a redshirt next year. I think Penn State only loses Brooks. The rest of their lineup can return, but don't know if CS or GK will. SVN will return from injury.

Not sure who Iowa loses. But some folks will probably transfer there to get NIL $$$, to not drill scrambles, and to underachieve. It's the Iowa style under the Brands brothers. Also, they will underperform in freestyle after their college careers. Yes, there are some exceptions (Spencer Lee, probably), but I know at least one prominent NCAA coach who thinks the Iowa room is a clown show for development., even though he thinks the Brands are great people Look how Hardy and Robb got wins over Iowa guys who previously had their number. There are a number of other examples. Askren almost says this out loud a lot. I don't know why so many are afraid to point out the obvious truth about Iowa failing to develop. I assume it's fear of the wrath of the large, yet mostly delusional, Iowa fanbase. I am not going to be scrambled brain and suggest that Team Brands should be fired, but I just see a clear ceiling on development within that room.

A couple other guys who redshirted are Northwestern transfer Cannon for Michigan and Paniro Johnson for Iowa State.
However, it’s possible Ragusin could redshirt and Chittum or Swiderski could redshirt

Lucky to get a trophy? Put down the Elmer's glue. :)
Any team not named Penn State will be lucky to win a trophy. There is tremendous parity in spots 2-10. With most of the top teams teams so active in the portal—getting a trophy is gonna be very challenging and require some breaks including staying healthy. I hope the Bucks can get it done—but if you think they are a lock to beat out NC State, Iowa, Michigan, Iowa St., Va Tech, Nebraska, Missouri, Cornell and others I would say that is extremely optimistic. Can they? Of course. Should they? Maybe. But they are no lock.

I think cannon was a grad transfer and I thought Ragusin was out of eligibility but could be wrong. Might have Covid year

Starocci is my least favorite champ in a while! Makes himself really hard to like if you’re not a PSU fan. I get that he can back up his talk, but Brooks is a perfect side by side comparison that he doesn’t need to be a complete and utter d-bag. It’s rare to see Carter have any humility or ever even credit his opponents. Was hoping Rocco would win for multiple reasons.

Davis at 125 for PSU could have won it all but he used up a good bit of luck at the dual against Vinny ;)
Brooks is equally a complete and utter d-bag if not more imo.

Cannon was hurt in like match 1 this year and has already been in school five years, I have no idea how productive he will be.

Paniro I just forgot about because of the gambling stuff with him this year. Echemendia is supposedly going way up in weight so it might work itself out next year.

how so? elaborate I've never seen or heard him be nothing but class act, always well spoken and very spiritual when have you seen him be one? He's confident on mat as he should be but ...a d bag? maybe you are just a O state fan and dont like penn state that's cool, just making sure its not some other undertone there

Wild stab at way too early lineup guess for next year:

125 - Kilkeary/McCrone - McCrone had some big wins this year, but also some bad losses. He's young, so another year to grow and develop helps, but also Kilkeary proved in the PSU dual he's game and ready to compete as well.
133 - Bouzakis - had some inconsistencies this year. Can he button that up with a full year to continue to develop? I think he's an AA contender next year.
141 - Mendez - Will he repeat?
149 - D'Emilio - As mentioned above I believe he has another year if he wants it. Does he come back? If not, is Herman the guy?
157 - Paddy - hoping he can make a full return health wise and hoping he gets back on track next year.
165 - Hepner - Not sure here. His style is interesting. He can provide a big win, but also look lethargic and uninterested as well. Do the Bucks have the resources to go after Hamiti?
174 - Rocco - Can he win it next year?
184 - Rogotzke - He's dangerous from any position. I think a full year to develop and grow will help him.
197 - Geog - I think he has large upside in college wrestling. Same as the other young bucks, a full offseason to continue to grow and develop I think helps him tremendously.
285 - Feldman - Had a good run at NCAA tournament. Excited for his development and growth as well.

I think again next year is another young team, but at the end of the day I think Coach Ryan will have the team in the right position and frame of mine come NCAA tournament time to contend for a trophy next year. There are a multitude of teams who will be in that trophy hunt next year behind PSU same as this year, but I think if some guys develop this offseason and fine tune a few things, the bucks can make a run next year and be in the hunt for a trophy.

I know it is unlikely, but imagine Sasso at 157 and Carson at 165.

Interesting. I agree it seems highly unlikely, but Sasso at 157 would be ideal.

Carson at 165? Can his body hold up through another college season and wasn't that the reason he went up to 174 in the first place? Do we really want to watch another season of Carson at 165?

If Carson is healthy and wants to go next year, do you put him in at 174 and redshirt Welsh?

As much

Umm no. As much as I would like to see it—no way. Good team—but the gap is way too large. I would bet my car on it. They will be lucky to get a trophy. Just being honest.

Not looking at it the right way. The question is whether or not Ryan will break with what he talks about in being "loyal". He stated he would stick with his guys and he believes in them. In the meantime, Michigan lost most of their line-up from 2023 - then went out and grabbed guys from the portal in Augustino, Gomez, Griffin, and Davison. Both Davison and Gomez made it the finals. Griffin almost did and was a past champion. Penn State picked up Nagao and Truax to fill gaps. May have been others - not sure.

Who has OSU picked up from the portal? Maybe Coach Ryan should go talk to Coach Day about the benefits of the portal. He may not lose many to the portal, but that will not change if you get active in picking up guys from the portal. Those that go to the portal would be the ones that are not likely going to be in your future plans. The top tier guys will be looking for the best opportunities available. The support for wrestling in Ohio far exceeds that of the state of Michigan. Get the NIL money for wrestling and compete against Penn State for the best athletes for your spots on the team. They will do it They will have guys knocking down doors to get a PSU portal transfer opportunity. OSU needs to be the 2nd best option.

Agree and disagree at the same time. I am nowhere close to understanding what discussions or conversations happen with new recruits, existing wrestlers, or RTC guys. I think it would be an easier sell for PSU with all of their resources and talent to sit a guy for a year or 2 and see how he develops or if there is a need to fill a gap while he matures. I don't think OSU is there yet and needs to get a couple really good result driven classes and retain them long term to build that same level. Once they have the depth from the RTC to incoming guys then they fill a gap here or there while giving the new guys time to develop. My not so scientific view of what separates PSU is the ability to bring in talent and gauge quickly if they are ready or if they need a little time to develop then strategically filling that gap. I think in 2-3 years they can go the route you are talking about.
