Hundreds of three-eyed 'dinosaur shrimp' emerge after Arizona monsoon

Go Buckeyes
Following a torrential summer downpour in northern Arizona, hundreds of bizarre, prehistoric-looking critters emerged from tiny eggs and began swimming around a temporary lake on the desert landscape, according to officials at Wupatki National Monument.

These tadpole-size creatures, called Triops "look like little mini-horseshoe crabs with three eyes," Lauren Carter, lead interpretation ranger at Wupatki National Monument, told Live Science. Their eggs can lay dormant for decades in the desert until enough rainfall falls to create lakes that provide real estate and time for the hatchlings to mature and lay eggs for the next generation, according to Central Michigan University.

Maybe the three "eyes" are just the points on their crowns.

Not too far from where I live. How was it? Tree colors? On my to-do list.
It was great. Our first time there but I was surprised how touristy it was. So many places that sell crap. Like NYC has the electronic stores, Gatlinburg has gift stores everywhere and Pigeon Forge was even worse. We got out of the main strip though and did some nature stuff. Now we‘re in Damascus and did the Virginia Creeper bike trail today. That was pretty cool. The foliage was perfect.

Forty years ago, Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge was unspoiled. The last time I was there (twenty years ago, work-related), it was just as you noted. I can only imagine what it is like now. Yes, if you get off the main strip it is really nice. Looking forward to doing the Virginia Creeper. Maybe, next year this season.

Can a town get any more touristy or cheesy than Pigeon Forge? At least Gatlinburg still has a bit of mountain village charm. Pigeon Forge, not so much.

It's a shame. Hopefully, nearby Cade's Cove has not been screwed up, too. (I can't imagine it nor do I want to).

Wonder if Cherokee has gone the same way. :(

Cherokee has the casino but hasn't developed much besides that. The drive over is always nice.
We either stay in downtown Gatlinburg or in a cabin. We try to stay out of Pigeon Forge.

Yep, I knew about the casino. Nice to know Cherokee has not gone full loco.

I'll check it out again one day - but, not during a holiday or peak leaf season. Been there, done that. (Yikes!)
