Elder (6-5) comes to RDI Stadium Friday 11/4 for a second round region 4 playoff game with the Bombers (9-2)
This will be the 104th meeting between the 2 teams
Elder leads the series 53-44-6
They have played every year since the first game in 1923 and this will be the 7th time in the post-season.
Specht vs Ramsey head to head since 2004 has St. X with a 15-7 advantage
StX has beaten Elder twice in the same season in 2001, 2007 and 2020.
Let's add 2021 to the list

Post Season X vs Elder (Tied 3-3)
2001 X won 24-21 Regional Final at Nippert Stadium
2002 X lost 20-16 1st Round at Nippert Stadium
2007 X won 45-14 1st Round at Ballaban Field
2009 X lost 17-14 2nd Round at Nippert Stadium
2019 X lost 28-24 2nd Round at Mason Dwier Field
2020 X won 56-28 3rd Round at Ballaban Field
2021 11/4 7pm 2nd Round at Ballaban Field

Time to break the post-season record tie

This senior class has 5 players who are 3 year varsity contributors:
OL Brian Parker, OL Cam Collins, RB Luke Vrsansky, PK Mason Rohmiller, FS Eli Kirk.
Collins missed half of the Ignatius game (week 9) and all of the ELCA and Hamilton games (weeks 10 and 11)
He is doubtful for this Friday
OL Jack Renneker has yet to play this year due to injury and not likely eligible this post season
Renneker would have been the 6th player on the list
Usually 2 maybe 3 sophomores get significant minutes on varsity but 6???

I think we need to fact-check Ramsey’s GCL titles. Elder really didn’t win GCL in 2002 or 2003?

EDIT: Elder was GCL champ in 2002 and 2003, along with co-champ in 1999.

It’s true, it’s true. Trust me …

I would have rather seen Colerain this week. I don't know if Elder can stop the X offense, but the X defense has seemed a bit off the past few weeks. Elder can score some points, and hung with the Bombers into Q3. Can't say I love this match up. Then again, there's probably not a match up I'm going to love the rest of the year.

Good catch, I only went back to 2004 (Specht's 1st year) instead of 1997 (Ramsey's 1st year)
Here is what I have on GCL Titles for 1997-2003

Year, StX Overall Record, StX GCL record, StX finish in GCL, if X not 1st then what team(s) won/shared the title
1997: 9-3, 2-1, 2nd, Moeller
1998: 11-2, 3-0, 1st
1999: 10-1, 3-0, 1st
2000: 8-4, 2-1, 1st (tied), StX/Moeller/Elder
2001: 13-1, 3-0, 1st
2002: 7-4, 2-1, 2nd, Elder
2003: 6-3, 0-3, 4th, Elder

So Elder shared GCL title in 2000 (3 way tie at 2-1 in 2000 with X and Moeller) and outright GCL champs in 2002 and 2003
In 1999 I have X as sole GCL champs at 3-0
I updated the original post......check those dates, let me know if incorrect. Thanks!

Post Season 7-6 (LaSalle 2-0, Moeller 2-3, Elder 3-3)

Ramsey vs GCL-S 41-42 (LaSalle 17-8), Moeller 14-13, StX 10-21)

Pressure (10x+) and sack Hambleton (4x+) and slow down Ramsey (under 150 total yards)
Unless the Panther's offensive line has drastically improved and/or they found another offensive playmaker X should be able to do both again.
Week 6: 10+ hurries, 4 sacks and Ramsey had 87 total yards (5 rushing, 12 receiving and 71 on kick returns)

This go around hoping to snag at least 1 interception, have zero punts rather than 1 and cut the penalty yards in half (50)

No doubt Elder was more competitive with X than Colerain-- and I think Elder will be again. X's defensive backfield has been found out-- I think that may be the reason that "there's probably not a match up (you're) going to love the rest of the year." I'd bet that Elder will struggle to pass block X's defensive front-- and Hambleton is NOT the elusive runner that past Elder QBs (e.g.- Ramsay, Bittner, Luebbe) have been, that torched X's defense-- but I have to believe that Elder will try rolling Hambleton out more this time, to buy him some more time, in this return matchup-- and then have him just throw some jump balls up to Ramsay to see what happens-- since so many others have had luck with a similar strategy this year against X's DBs. After that first game, Coach Ramsay seemed awfully confident that his team could fix some things, and be competitive with X for a full game.

The big receivers (from Trinity, Ig, Hamilton, LW) have just jumped over the X DB's and taken the ball away from him (it helps when the refs refuse to call offensive pass interference on Hamilton's bully-boy receiver), and the fast receivers (Trinity, Moeller) have run by them. I imagine that it is troubling (to anyone who hopes to see this X team win a state title this year) that X is having this many problems in the defensive backfield; I'd argue that on ALL of the X state title teams, X had better results on pass defense than X has had this season-- which makes me seriously wonder whether this season can turn out as those seasons did...

Looking out at potential future playoff matchups, I wouldn't bet against Elder finding a way to exploit this weakness, in a second game-- and then, should X win, I've got to figure that LW (despite Bolden's limitations as a passing QB) will use his athleticism to buy time to throw-- and then be throwing to one of LW's top defensive backs (as a two-way WR) more often this time-- LW's Afari just jumped over X's DB and took the ball away from him for the second LW TD in that game-- and I'd bet those jump balls will be a staple this time, if LW proves unable to run it (again). If X gets past those likely matchups, I'd expect Moeller (with a different QB this time) to do a better job of hitting those open WRs, as they run past the X DBs than Moeller's backup QB did last time; then, it's likely that Springfield's Smoot would make life difficult (for both X's defensive front and the DBs), with his athleticism-- I'd expect a LOT of broken plays, with WRs running free, uncovered in the backfield. If X can surmount ALL of those "matchups you're not going to love", then it's likely that X would face either an athletic Ed QB (Ramos) throwing to some equally athletic WRs, or a nationally ranked Medina QB throwing to 4 talented WRs-- with neither matchup giving me any warm fuzzies about the likely outcome.

If X is going to win the title this year, it feels like they will need to play better in the defensive secondary... oh, and stop shooting themselves in the foot with their offensive play-calling-- ESPECIALLY at the end of the first half.

Harp is the guy that worries me more than Ramsey given his size and the X db's seeming unable to cover bigger receivers- which is a bit crazy given that the backfield has some taller guys than you usually see in HS. Luckily, Hambleton really doesn't have the wheels to escape well, and the Elder line is abysmal. I think X can get home rushing 4-5 consistently, have a spy on Ramsey, and drop at least one safety to help on the deep ball. I would have to re-watch the first match up, but I don't think Elder has the players to stop X on offense, especially with BMc starting to get the other WR's and TE's involved in the passing game. This game will be closer I think, and Elder will probably hit on 2-3 deep balls. I can see 38-21 X winning.

Down the road, LW will be the toughest defense until (hopefully) X gets to the state semis. I am not scared of their offense still. Their numbers are gaudy against the GMC patsies, and didn't reach 250 yards against Colerain. Their scoring drives against X covered a total of less than 50 yards. They may hit a couple of deep balls, but they cannot run consistently enough to be a threat on the ground. If X's playcalling is disciplined enough to stay with the run, it will wear them out again.

Moeller is a different animal right now with their QB1 playing. He is able to throw short- intermediate timing routes well, and they have the two burners, and Kattus can give the defense some trouble. The downside of their offense is that they do not have a power game like Ignatius, or a big receiver to run deep. X adjusted to their deep routes, and does not have to load the box to stop the run. Their defense is not good, so they will have to keep control of the ball.

If both make it that far, I've thought all year that Springfield will be X's biggest test. They play well against the run with Brown and January up front on defense, and Bradley is great on the back end. X will have to get the full offense involved in the passing game. Smoot is a problem, though I think if X can keep him in the pocket, they will have success. I would like to see more inside stunts from the X defense in general- they get burned by mobile QB's because the ends and OLB's are so quick outside and get too far upfield. Last year, Gio and Devine were great cover for this. No offense to Hammond (who is very good, and will be a star), and Reilly, who is solid, but they are not those guys. Springfield has basically the same team from last year, and X only gave up 10 against them- I'll take my chances with the deep balls.

This team seems to have a habit of underestimating opponents with average or bad records, coming out especially flat on defense. After Elder, who I am fairly sure they will have zero problem getting up for, I don't see them running into anyone they could possibly take lightly. Hopefully they can get 74 healthy and keep the rest healthy for stretch run.

So with GameDay coming to UC on Saturday and a certain member of the GameDay crew having a son who plays football for the Bombers, is it possible we could see the GameDay crew on North Bend Rd. Friday evening?? Hmm...

Ramsey gets player of the year in the GCL?? What a farce.
Not only was CK more impressive over the course of a year with reduced PT due to 7 turbo clock games but weighed more heavily is performance in GCL games specifically because those are the games seen "live" by the other coaches voting.

GCL Games
Kellom 82 carries for 482 yards (5.9 ypc) and 9 TDs; 6 catches for 125 yards (20.8 ypc) and 1 TD; Totals: 607 yards and 10 TDs
Ramsey 31 carries for 120 yards (3.9 ypc) and 3 TDs; 28 catches for 186 yards (6.6 ypc) and 0 TD; Totals: 306 yards and 3 TDS

It's not even close.
This is an effing outrage.
Something needs to be done regarding dad's being allowed to vote for their son and influencing the voting process.
Kellom got totally screwed on this........all the more reason to play the starters the whole game on Friday

#55 being left off the list is just as bad. Two year starter who has played both tackle positions and RG this year for the Bombers. Hope he uses this for inspiration the rest of the way. #61 also a two year starter who can play C or G. Plays much bigger than his size.

What a crock of crap. Hope we get to see CK running over Elder defenders again Friday, and the students chanting MVP.

I believe Ramsey has over a 100 catches this season? You better check your stats.......

I believe Ramsey has over a 100 catches this season? You better check your stats.......
He posted both Ramsey's total season stats (at 105 catches) and his GCL league game-only stats (at 28 catches); either way, it does not look like Ramsey warranted this award (certainly not exclusively), when compared with Kellom's stats (or McCaughey's stats, for that matter)-- if the (offensive) award is given primarily for having the gaudiest scoring and yardage stats among skill players (we all know that an 18-year old Anthony Munoz could play for a GCL, or any HS, team, pancake his blocking assignment on every play, score 3 TDs on tackle-eligible pass plays, and STILL not get a sniff of the offensive player of the year award)...

I know that there is major "log-rolling" that goes on in these All-League awards: "You vote for my player(s), and I'll vote for yours" (since coaches apparently can't vote for their own players)-- and X DID get the most players on the All-League teams (rightfully so, as they defeated all three league opponents by more than 30 points, and had the best season of any team in the league)-- but, for X's top two offensive players to NOT get even a "Co" Player of the Year designation suggests to me that maybe something else is going on here...

It feels like the log-rolling only went so far-- and maybe the other three coaches decided (somehow) that it didn't serve their purposes (or interests) to have X not only have the most players on the All-GCL team, but to ALSO have both the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year-- if you want to attract future top players to play at your school, MAYBE it just won't do, to have another school in the league dominating the league's games, stats, and awards, the way Moeller did in the 1970's-1980's.
