XC Info

To kick-off the upcoming X-C season, I thought I'd post a link I found for X-C historians out there. From the 1997-98 season, issues of Ohio Cross Country News.

Good luck to all the athletes, coaches, and families of those in the upcoming 2023 XC season!

I will be following the results for additions to the all-time lists I began last year. Sub-15 for boys, sub-18 for girls.

I tentatively have planned to begin a research project into the state XC meet. While OHSAA has the basic information on team winners and such, they lack team members info as well as other info. I'm thinking of starting that project during the 2024 XC season.

I hope you have better luck than I did. OHSAA "official" results are pretty mediocre and the states major newspapers didn't have much more. I have no full results pre-1978.

Thank you. Newspaper reports of the past were really at the mercy of their local reporters' interest in a particular sport. Some years are good, some years are just awful. But I'm sure you and others have known that for years, too. I do have the time for the 1st 10 places from the 1st XC state meet in '28. They are:

Place Mark Name Grade School

1 14:10 MR Charles Medberry Columbus East

2 14:11 Howard Bennett Columbus Central

3 14:16 Richard Womer 12 Lakewood

4 tie 14:18 Harvey Smith 11 Lakewood

4 tie 14:18 Harold Shepard 11 Wooster

6 14:26 William Mills Columbus East

7 14:38 Ray Sampson Toledo Scott

8 14:40 Charles Liffiton 12 Lakewood

9 14:44 Sam Krakowsky 11 Lakewood

10 14:50 Clarence Walker 10 Salem

I doubt I'll find more times, though, unless I stumble across them in a school yearbook or newsletter. My first goal is to accumulate the basics from OHSAA, then expand and revise based on other sources.

11 11 Jacob Levine no time Lakewood

12 12 Ken Smith no time Lakewood

13 13 Enos Nixon no time Greenville

14 14 Robert Gray no time Columbus East

15 John Wagner no time Sandusky

16 Donald Brattin no time Sandusky

Javman - curious where you found times for the top 10. OHSAA and all newspapers only listed the top 3 times.

November 10th edition of The Coshocton Tribune, pg. 6.

I've already located the top 12 times from the 1929 race as well. Over time, I'll be building this database.

The OHSAA (I assume) had typed copies of full meet results that were distributed post-state meet to coaches. They were printed on pink and orange and yellow paper (depending on what color they were trying to get rid of). I have 78. 80, 83, 84 and 87 forward. I am curious when those sheets started being distributed.

Up until 2 years ago, I had the scoreboard for one of the state meet CC races from '83. Our bibs were hand written numbers on the back of vinyl wall paper. Stickers with our names and school were on labels that were stuck on a large sheet of cardboard with had written division etc... Meant more to my parents than me and when they passed, I got rid of it. Had it for close to 40 years. Burned it in my parents yard. It was very primitive, but it got the job done. Regret a little not keeping it.
