Xavier hires Richard Pitino

I am surprised. Wonder what happened with Return of the Mack?!

I’d say this is a good hire for XU. I now expect Willard to take Nova job, once Maryland loses.

Xavier moved quickly after Chris Mack announced he would remain at the College of Charleston. Had Mack decided to return to Xavier, where he led the Musketeers for nine seasons, it would have marked the second time he followed Miller as coach at the Cincinnati school.

A man has to know his limitations. Pitino did poorly at Minny, BIG East is not the BIG TEN in quality of depth but a step up from Mountain West. Will see if he can compete with the better teams in the Big East. Sometimes being content is not a bad thing.

Per the crazed Muskie fan I reside with (and her school source), Xavier decision makers passed on Mack, not the other way around.

As a Bearcat fan, I am very pleased that X did not bring Mack back.....He might be a punk, but dude can recruit and coach. He can game plan, gets his guys to play hard, and makes good in game adjustments. Don't know why his UofL time went sideways the way it did, but I actually hope UC makes a run at Chris Mack if we run Miller off after next season.......

All is true about Mack as a coach, but I cannot see UC making a run at him.

Mack is a Xavier guy all the way. Besides, he’s good friends with John Brannen, and we all know how UC feels about him and that situation.

And before we get rid of Miller and Satterfield, John Cunningham needs to be fired. He is not capable of making good hires or biz decisions.

I chalk up the struggles at Minnesota as a young coach (30 when he took the job) being in over his head.

I assume they didn’t bring Mack back due to fear of getting used again as they did with Miller.

This is a good hire for X.
The reality is if Pitino does well at Xavier, he’ll probably replace his dad at St John’s. Xavier is a stepping stone but so is every other program outside of maybe 15 schools.

Kelsey was the only coach that would’ve stayed long term with any success, and he’s a unique situation where he not only coached at Xavier, but is from Cincinnati and has strong family ties to the city. Now that he’s at Louisville, only 90 mins away, he’s not going anywhere.

In listening to the media reports, the talking heads were stating that Xavier had plenty of NIL money that could be spent on players, since no money had to be allocated for football. Where is this money coming from? Who are the major contributors? LaRosa's? Skyline? Rumpke? Doc Rusk?

Revenue sharing that allows basketball only schools to spend money. Link is below, but …

“Simply put, while details about the revenue sharing settlement are still being sketched out, non-football schools will likely be able to directly pay basketball players more money than Power 5 schools. Perhaps this is why Richard Pitino came to Xavier and Kevin Willard is contemplating a move to Villanova.”

Don't forget Deer Park Roofing and Dilly Deli......
