Why hate the good?

This is probably more of a general sports question overall but we can make it specific to the NFL. We are now what, 6 seasons into the Chiefs dynasty. Did you know that prior to Mahomes showing up, the Chiefs were a pretty ordinary franchise, occasionally making the playoffs. They won Super Bowl #4 way back in 1969, had been to one conference championship since then. Today, outside of Chiefs fans, they are largely hated by many fanbases, including the Bengals, Browns and Bills. But wait, remember back in the 2018s - 2020's, another team was hated, the Patriots. Their run had lasted for nearly two decades with the same QB and coach and many hated them. When does hatred turn into respect and why doesn't that happen immediately?
Do we like our team, or do we like to root against others? Why is that? All things being equal, Mahomes seems like a pretty good guy. You don't see him into trouble off the field, Tom Brady was the same way. I still say deflate gate was nit picky and really didn't provide an advantage at all for Brady.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's. Back then, the Steelers were hated, the Cowboys, obviously in this area the Broncos in the late 80's and Elway, although they didn't win it all at the time. Obviously the Patriots have carried the water the last 20 years.

I can only speak for myself, but in the absence of any real rooting interest, I tend to pull for the underdog (or, at minimum, the team that hasn't had as much success). I don't equate that to hating, just finding some reason to pull for one team over another. Let's face it - when you win a lot, the majority of people outside that area are going to be rooting against you.

I wouldn't necessarily call it hate, but sometimes I just get tired of hearing about the same player(s) over and over. When Tiger Woods was in his glory, ESPN would show you highlight 20 of his shots during a tournament...then tell you that he finished at -3...and oh yeah, this other guy won the title. Mahomes with all of his commercials. Maauto with the Taylor Swift crap. Enough already.

This goes against the bandwagon concept where it seems like fans gravitate to a team that wins. I've seen more Lions fans this year than I have in my lifetime.

But the networks would tell us this is what "we" want. Tiger Woods an excellent example. A few years ago, you could have a tournament with the top 10 players of the year without Tiger and the ratings stunk. The following weekend Tiger plays and there's only a couple other top players and the ratings are off the charts. I just want to know how State Farm and Subway can pay all these celebs and still make a profit? I mean I don't have State Farm, there isn't a celebrity that would make me change insurance companies, and I've not had a Subway sandwich in years! Jared may had been their spokesperson back then. :ROFLMAO:

Tiger is a good example of over the top highlights when he didn't place in the top ten. Lebron was another. ESPN Would show 10 highlights of his game, 8 or 9 featuring LeBron. His team may or may not have won. Lebron may or may not have been the leading scorer. On this site we are sports fans. ESPN, and others, are trying to maximize their profits with casual and non sports fans. Enter Taylor Swift and her fans. I understand WHY she's shown.
True sports fans have Swift fatigue. Swifties can't get enough. Either way it's been reported that the cheapest ticket for the Super Bowl is north of 8K. My bet that it will be the most watched SB in history. Can't wait to see how much a 30 second commercial is this year.
Oh, about Chief hate? Unless it's their fan base there will always be a " I'm tired of seeing so & so win" Unless there is some Michael Jordan phenomenon. Brady and Lebron doesn't rise to Jordan in that aspect. To a lesser degree Steph Curry might ( might)

Swift fatigue? Per a NY Times article, the NFL games Swift has attended this year the networks have shown her for an average of 25 seconds.

The average ticket for this years Super Bowl is north of $10,000.

I'll jump on the pile. Very little of it has to do with "hating the 'good'". It's moreso rooting for the underdog. Rooting for diversity. I don't want to see the same team win year after year. Repetition is boring. This is their fourth Super Bowl in 5 years. I don't care what team it is, that's annoying. Especially when their opponent has now been in it 8 times, and was in it just 4 seasons ago. And in the NFCCG for three straight years and 4 of the last 5 years.

Secondarily, humility. Nobody wants to hear that the Chiefs 'struggled' to get here... for the fourth time. It's not a struggle. it's expected. Don't whine about calls like Mahomes did against the Bills. Don't use a postgame handshake as a time to belittle your opponent that there were bad calls against your team when you just should be thanking them for a good game and congratulating them.

First game in Las Vegas. First of many, honestly. Huge party city is hosting the biggest annual event in the US. It's going to attract a crowd and that's going to shoot demand through the roof. Plus, LV also has a huge transplant population from other cities (and is not too far from LA which is another huge transplant population) and you're going to see a lot of locals whose only impediment to attending is the ticket. All that demand will drive up the price. We're also two weeks away. Most of those sky high prices are what they WANT to sell them for, not what they're willing to sell them for.

For instance, many fans (17% of all tickets go to each team's season ticket holders, 34% total) get them for the NFL face value and then put them up for sale. They INTEND to go to the game. But if some rube with money burning through their pocket will pay $10k each to go to the Super Bowl? Those happy ticket holders will gladly pocket the money and watch from home or still travel and make a weekend of it and just not see it in person.

There's opportunity cost and then there's actual sale cost.

Same reason people freak out over absurdly priced _ANYTHING_ used online. Some 2007 Toyota is being listed for $30k. Yeah, they're not trying to sell the car. They're willing to sell the car if someone is willing to give them that much for it. Same issue here. I'll sell my house for $1 million, no questions asked. But I'm not actively looking to sell it even for the going rates.

All great points. So is our fatigue has more to do with how the teams are covered? I mean if you only watched the games every week, no pregame, postgame, no sportstalk shows, you would only see who won on the field, and isn't that what sports is all about anyway? These sports networks, ESPN, ABC, FOX, etc. have to come up with narratives to keep interest high. I'm not sayting the games are scripted, but everything outside of that is. I mean do you really think the coaches enjoy the press conferences?? Most look like they are going to the dentist for a root canal. Their decisions are criticized by men and women, many of whom never played a down of football in their life. My point is it's all a big show. Are the games rigged? No, I don't think so. There would have to be so many people involved in a scheme like that it's not possible.

I have no problems with the Chiefs, I'm a Titans fan and I feel the Chiefs have just hit the lottery with the coach and QB they have. Reid may go down as one of the best ever behind Belichick. I can't do anything but respect that. Yea, Mahomes comes off looking childish after the Bills regular season game, but other than that, he's a pretty solid person to root for. Especially for a guy who's got the world by the tail like he does. Their time will come and go and there will be a new team to hate, that's the cycle of the NFL.

Don't get me started on the Vegas and Super Bowls and that whole thing. The super bowl has become anything but the game itself and that's sad. But then again, the NFL knows we're going to watch it as die hard fans, they need to go after the fringe.
My feeling is the biggest threat to sports is betting, and I'll be darned if they didn't just jump in bed with betting. It saddens me that so many talk about point spreads and overs and unders. I never started liking sports because of betting.

American culture prefers the underdog
This begs the question with the Super Bowl. The 49ers are currently a 2 pt. favorite on most betting apps, but would many consider them the underdog this year, given the past track record of Mahomes and the Chiefs?

I don't think people's perception of the underdog is that much influenced by Vegas odds. But America does tend to have a more melancholic view of the Super Bowl when two "always there" teams play compared to an elite vs real underdog. The football world would be talking about the Lions non-stop right now if they hadn't blown it.

The Lions could be 14 point favorites in a Super Bowl and America would consider them the underdog. It's not JUST the spread that determines underdog status.

As for sports betting, after the court case legalized it nationally, leagues were forced to either ride the wave or get pulled under. Though they would probably prefer to keep the foibles of gambling away from the league at least in terms of perception than reality, they could take command of it and use it as a revenue stream with loyal lapdog sponsors who will pay big money for exclusive rights. Which will be coming. Want to bet on nfl? Need to use MGM. Want to wager on NBA? Need Draft Kings, etc. Maybe they'll not be able to restrict it but they'll certainly find ways to funnel people to the preferred sports book.

The only big issue right now is that television and even websites are way behind sports book giving scoring updates. Makes live betting difficult.

I’m a Bengals fan, but I don’t hate the Chiefs. I was actually rooting for them to beat John Harbaugh’s no-good Ravens.

I will root for SF to win the Super Bowl; I believe Kyle Shanahan, Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Fred Warner, Trent Williams, George Kittle and others deserve to get a ring at some point in their careers, and this might be their best chance.

The only teams I really dislike are the Ravens and Steelers. And have Cowboys fatigue because ESPN talks about them nonstop until they get eliminated each year. The Chiefs don’t get nearly the media time (aside from commercials) that the Cowboys and Eagles have gotten.

I wouldn't necessarily call it hate, but sometimes I just get tired of hearing about the same player(s) over and over. I agree with your comments, but I think Andy Reid in the commercial with the "nuggies" is funny.

This principle of microeconomics explains the situation best:

What Is the Law of Diminishing Marginal Utility?

The law of diminishing marginal utility states that all else equal, as consumption increases, the marginal utility derived from each additional unit declines. Marginal utility is the incremental increase in utility that results from the consumption of one additional unit. "Utility" is an economic term used to represent satisfaction or happiness.

In simple terms, the law of diminishing marginal utility means that the more of an item that you use or consume, the less satisfaction you get from each additional unit consumed or used.

Yeah, you might like steak, but that 7th steak dinner in a row isn't going to make you as happy as if you replaced it with a plate of pasta.

For me it is not about hating a team as much the fan base … I respect both the Steelers and Ravens … they do a lot of things organizationally I like … both are usually well coached … much like KC … it is the fan bases that get to me … they start to get obnoxious and arrogant … I had to live near Pittsburgh for 3 years … and as a Browns fans, that is when I developed a deep hatred for the Steelers … I think all consistently winning team’s fan base get this way … I would hate Ohio State if I was not a fan … their fan base can be just as obnoxious and arrogant … it’s the fan base that does it for me.

I think all of us kind of act the same if our teams are winning. So why is it so hard to just disconnect how fan bases react and just appreciate the greatness? Now a slight twist to this is the Dallas Cowboys. If you are in your lower 30's and younger, you really don't associate the Cowboys with winning at all. I'm 58 years old and I don't associate UCLA basketball as great because in my lifetime, they've won the finals once and have only been good a few other times. I think with the Cowboys, it's all media driven. This has really one come about the last 10 years or so where sports talk shows has gone away from any kind of balanced coverage, to just picking out a few specific teams and reporting on them one of two ways - how great they are? or what's wrong with them? We see this weekly in the coverage of the NFL. There is a segment or two every Monday that the Cowboys are great, or the Cowboys are awful based on how they played that weekend. Since 1995, the Dallas Cowboys has not been to an NFC conference championship game.

If they only knew that she was a mindless Left Wing Commie, she would be the MAIN ATTRACTION!

It's funny that you mention that. I'd clearly say that I lean to the conservative side, although I really pay little attention to politics. But in my opinion, I think those who lean right are able to balance a persons political slants much much better than those on the left. I mean it seems like liberals cannot ever, ever, ever root for or agree with a conservative. Tim Tebow is a great example. Most pro athletes seem to lean to the left, most entertainers do as well. I feel for them it's more because they've really never lived a "real" life. For many of them, they've been pro athletes/ entertainers their whole careers. They don't live normal lives, pay taxes ( or at least calcuate their taxes) so don't have a real appreciation for the country at large.
Now weather Swift is really liberal or not, it behooves her career to be that way because if not, the cancel culture takes over.

I just get annoyed and start to 'hate' in instances like this when they (team, players, etc) are crammed down our throats in every instance.
In terms fo the Chefs....everywhwere you turn you see a Pats Mahomes commercial, see Mr. Taylor swift, etc etc etc.

Much of it is media driven to me.

Even tho the Patriots took out my Steelers in years we coulda won a SB, I never hated them. Had nothing but ultimate respect and I think some of it had to be with how they ran their franchise.....not overpaying everyone trying to buy a title, TB12 wasnt all over the place in commercials, etc.

Much is you ust get sick of hearing about them but I pretty much avoid the media with pre/post game, offseaon crap you see on the sports channels.

Marketing of sports has become as important as the games themselves, and it's really up to the participants/ their agents. As you said, Tom Brady laid pretty low during his days in New England, and that was his decision and the organizations. We will never see another run like the Patriots in professional football. The league sets it up so you can't create dynasties. The salary cap, draft, schedule changes and levels of contracts make it nerarly impossible to keep a core group together. For the Chiefs it's been Mahomes and Kelce and that's it on offense. Brady went through numerous running backs and receivers and the Patriots were really built around their defense.
The thing about the media and there is such a blurred line now because ESPN/ FOX/ all the sports networks are not journalists at all, they are marketers of the NFL and it's teams. The Dallas Cowboys are talked about so much because they have a HUGE fan base, and alot of haters, so that gets ratings, and ratings drives the bus in sports.

I'm with you, I don't follow much of the shows on ESPN. It's funny how if you follow a local team closely, their view of the team and the local media can be drastically different.

Anymore for the games I will tune it a kickoff, and turn off when it is over. I cannot stomach the pre, post game etc etc etc. I do not need to hear about what I am about to see, or what I just saw, or anyone 'breaking down the game' to me like I am some sweetie right off the turnup truck.
How they slobber over players and plays, to market the game, just turned me off years ago.

To make things worse now, for me, is the talk of the betting lines and such. The extent of non games of what I watch is always in passing at a restaurant, on the tv while on the treadmill at the gym, etc and yeah, just too many guys and programs trying to justify their salaries and/or saying outrageous things just to see themselves trend on myspace

Boy we are alot alike, and that should scare you. 🫢
I said from the jump that this legalization and allowance of gambling is going to hurt sports and it is. Sadly, the networks are too focused to the bottom line and sold their collective souls to the gambling devil. All sports shows, sports talk radio is now funded by the gambling companies and casinos.
It's funny when you do catch some of those shows for the postgame and you'll swear they "expert" saw a completely different game than what you just watched.

Ive seen that movie before, it was called The Last Boy Scout.

It doesnt scare me as much as it probably makes you feel honored.......

It's the arrogance that is despised. Ravens, Steelers, Cowboys, Lakers, Yankees fans are insufferable.

Never met a lot of Ravens fans, but I’ve never found the Steelers fans to be arrogant. They all seem down to earth and very passionate about their team.

Cowboys, Yankees and Lakers fans all have that annoying front runner vibe. When their team is in a down cycle they lay low. When they are winning they are insufferable.
