What Cuomo did was stupid, but he did suffer under the disadvantage of making that decision early in the pandemic before we did not fully understand the disease and how it was spread. Now we do and governors like Noem still refuse to take actions necessary to prevent its spread. People are dead because of that.

Why are you not blasting NJ, NY, Conn., RI ? RI has a pop. of 1 million and has 1300 covid deaths despite strict mask policy and shutdowns. BTW how many meat packing plants are their in RI compared to SD ? At least Noem is not destroying SD's economy just to please the liberal narrative. Noem realizes that just doing something like mask mandates and shutdowns pleases the liberal media but does little to stop the spread of Covid and destroys small businesses and puts the taxpayer on the hoof for paying all of this crap. I appreciate a Gov. who stands up for the tax payer.

We've been over all of this before. There's no excuse for ND or SD to be so high up the death rate list given the time frames. Testing, treatment and overall knowledge related to COVID are better today than they were when the Mid-Atlantic and New England states got hit first. ND and SD also have the advantage of being very sparsely populated.

No, my position (which should be yours) is that he acted against the data that was available at the time, which showed how deadly this is to the elderly and his decision was criminally negligent. Be honest for once in your life and think what would have happened if Trump had ordered nursing home to take infected residents ??
A quick look at the numbers would seem to indicate this is more about Rhode Island not having sufficient hospital capacity overall.
It looks like Rhode Island only has 42 ICU beds. For comparisons, Cuyahoga County (whose population is only 15% larger than RI) has almost 400 ICU beds. Rhode Island only has 800 total hospital beds. Cuyahoga County has 4,800.
Probably wasn't any great answers at the time. Wasn't the goal to free up more hospital beds for new patients coming in the door with COVID (or other serious, time sensitive medical problems)? Would it have been better or worse to leave the elderly in the hospitals but others die due to lack of treatment? Again, there were no good answers early on.

Hindsight affords us the ability to say what was or wasn't a mistake after the fact. What should he have done differently? I think we agree something different should have been done. I'm not sure what that is given the circumstances at the time.

What should he have done instead? I'm not going to research the entire timeline for NY at this moment, but wasn't the alternatives doing what he did or start denying care at hospitals? Again, either option sounds pretty horrible.
If he had kept the elderly in hospitals and thousands of others died from lack of care, you'd all be crucifying him for that.

Your statistic is completely misleading. The states listed had their high death rates early in the pandemic when we did not fully understand the disease and how it was spread. Now we do and those such as Governor Noem who continue policies that cost lives and their willful ignorance makes them responsible.

Then what do you do with those infected patients instead? Remember, NY was struggling with capacity issues at hospitals at the time. Bodies were piling up in refrigerated trucks outside of hospitals.
It's easy to say in hindsight what NY shouldn't have done, but what should they have done instead that wouldn't have necessarily produced a worse outcome, especially considering the information they had available to them at the time.

But it's clearly spreading less in California. If California had the same death rate as North Dakota, there'd be an additional 40,000 dead in California than they have today.

Cuomo acted at a time when our information about the disease was limited. We now understand how the disease is spread. Noem and 'De Santis have access to this knowledge and chose not to accept it. They have a reckless indifference to the disease and its threat of their citizens.
