1. Brad Nessler
2. Vern Lundquest
3. Ron Franklin(Fired by ESPN a few years ago)
4. Keith Jackson
5. Mike Patrick






Brent Mussberger is the WORST!
 
 
1. Jim Ross - More than just a Wrasslin announcer. He made crap XFL games sound interesting.
2. Gus Johnson
3. Verne Lundquist
4. Brad Nessler
5. Matt Vasgersian (MLB The Show)

I prefer color commentators like Bill "Onions" Raftery. I like a little humor with my sporting events.

I realize this is your opinion, so that makes it valid, but I can't believe anyone would put Mike Patrick on their list. He is one of the all-time worst. Always giving wrong names and half the time it seems like he forgets which game he's doing.
 
Play by play is a different job then the color commentators; play by play is about conveying the action on field to the viewer/listener while color is about explaing what is happening on the field and adding to the experience. Here are my favorite play by play

All Around: Al Michaels


Baseball: Ernie Harwell


NCAA Football: Keith Jackson


Basketball: Joe Tait

Madden and Lapham don't/didn't do play-by-play. Lapham is absolutely horrible in the post-game show, though.

I'm sure if Marty posted his list he'd put himself first, too.

Lapham isn't a play by play but man he is HORRIBLE.

Also, obviously opinions are all different but I personally don't see how Gus Johnson can't be in peoples top 5.
 
Auggie is right, there is a big difference between play-by-play and color commentators. Since Bringtherain asked who are your top 5 PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCERS here is my list:
Keith Jackson
Ron Franklin
Lindsey Nelson
Dick Enberg
Pat Summerall
 
Gus Johnson is annoying. He was great like five years ago, but he basically became a parody of himself after awhile.
 
Another old-school guy who was outstanding was Ray Scott.

"This is Osborn................he gains three." Very understated, like Summeral.
