Versailles vs Marion Local

Marion Local has won 10 in a row in this series including playoffs but V still owns the overall series lead 37 - 30 as this series was lopsided in Versailles favor before Goodwin and before Hetrick retired. Whoever can run the football the best will win the game which favors Versailles as ML is small in the front 7 and offensively the Flyers have been playing musical chairs at running back. Against New Bremen 4 different Flyers played rb including wr Griffin Bruns before subs came in, Goodwin cannot find an every down back since Otte went out (injury) vs Wapak. Score V 21 - ML 14.

Not sure why you are sticking with the idea that don't think a backfield by committee won't work? Gives a fresh set of legs and the RB committee has looked pretty good the last 3 weeks.

I think whoever can pass the ball wins. ML will stack the box to stock Osborne. Versailles will have to pass to move the chains.

Didn't say it won't work but it is not ideal and last night vs NB, Flyer's running game was very hit and miss especially in the 1st half mostly miss. Goodwin even moved Heitkamp to tailback and played Griffin Bruns at tailback.
Edit: If Marion Local can get the running game going on a consistent basis Friday, yes, they will win as Marion Local has a good QB and 4 good receivers.

Both teams are capable of throwing the football esp. ML but the team that gave the Flyers the most "problems" this year was Wapak with Knous rushing for over a hundred yds. on 20 plus carries that is the formula for beating Marion Local as it keeps the Flyers offense off the field. Marion Local also has 2 dangerous punt returners in Hoelscher and Bruns but the Flyers have a frosh punter which could be an issue.

It'll be interesting to see to what degree ML can limit Versailles' potent rushing attack - Gehret (if he's healthy) and Osborne are highly productive ball carriers. I will be surprised if ML can hold the Tigers under 100 yards rushing, and not surprised if V gains over 150 yards on the ground.

ML's passing attack is impressive. If Marion can run the ball decently, they will likely gain the overall yards needed to win. But that's no guarantee against V's strong run defense.

If Marion cannot gain consistent yards on the ground, and must rely almost entirely on its air attack to move the ball, I see V winning.

Should be a great game, with a big crowd and lots of energy in the stadium.

In the three-dog race for the conference title, ML's got a bit of an advantage over V and CW. V must play both games on the road, and Coldwater must play V and ML in back-to-back weeks.

Marion plays both games at home - and four weeks apart.

One other thought: ML's Victor Hoelscher and V's Michael Osborne are both great punt returners (not sure if they both return kickoffs as well).

Anyway, should be another interesting element to a much-anticipated game.

p.s. Hoelscher's dad is a V grad

Versailles is allowing 2.8 points per game, and they haven't trailed yet. That alone makes them the favorite going into this game. I'm picking the upset however. I like the firepower Marion Local has this year. Sounds nuts, but Flyers over the Tigers 35-21.

Turnovers will be big in this game. With both teams trying to make big plays passing, this opens up interception opportunities.
Goodwin is advantage Marion.
Michael Osborne is advantage Versailles.
Marion Local wins this game unless #17 makes some plays like QB Otte did two years ago.

And how the schedule turned out, Marion follows up with teams that were beat up by Versailles.

Correct your nuts. Teams that win big games, win league titles, win state championship's, run the football.

Won't argue with that. Versailles may get their 4th shutout of the year Sept 22. I think the running game is progressing nicely. They had their struggles yesterday, but Bremen is a very physical bunch. They held Versailles to a mere 7 points for the first two quarters plus. Could be nuts. I really think the Flyers have the weapons to pull the upset here.

If Gehret is good to go, V has the advantage over ML this year in rushing prowess.

Still, Marion's strong passing game probably evens things up.
Dang you posted before I deleted that post, whoever wins the rushing battle will win the game less turnovers play a factor. ML lost to Kirtland twice because they couldn't stop K's running game, lost in 20 to NB had trouble stopping Wells plus TO's, lost to Minster in 19 when Minster had close to 200 yds. rushing, contrary to what some posters believe you beat ML upfront. Esp. this year the secondary for the Flyers is the strength of the defense if V rushes for 150 yds. plus the tigers will win unless they turn the football over. Passing the football is good for tv ratings but running the football wins big games just ask OSU in their last 2 games vs TTUN.

A ML victory would not be an upset.

But it probably won't happen anyway. I predict V will go +1 in the turnover battle, and have a big special teams play to win 16-14.

Plus Versailles is due to win vs Marion Local.
Anna was probably "due" for a win against the Flyers in 2019 as well. I'm more confident in the Flyers the closer we get to the game. I said a couple weeks ago or so, that the most likely team to end this winning streak is Versailles. Shouldn't shock anyone if the Flyers go down here.

I agree, but it seems like V plays against 12 when they play in Maria Stein. The Tigers have not defeated ML at Booster Field since Goodwin came to Marion.

V's best chances were in '99, '04, and '21 - great Tiger teams that didn't get the win.

So the Tigers have an opportunity to kind of make history Friday.

Knouff is the wild card in this game wouldn't surprise me if he has 10 to 15 carries this coming Friday.

I'm setting the over under at 42.5 points. Think historically Marion's ability to stop the run gives them the advantage, but are they big enough to stop the run between the tackles effectively? Something like Versailles 22 , Marion Local 21. Versailles wins on successful two point attempt in final minute.

That would be wild considering 2020 we lost by not converting the 2 pt conversion. And 2021 we lost by 2.

Yes David Hoelscher is the only former Versailles footballer to play in the NFL…. and then moves to Marion haha

Expecting a big crowd inside Booster stadium again though. Lot of Osgood / North Star church goers being bitter rivals for a week
