Toledo Area Basketball 23-24

Isn't Emmanual D3?

I think MVCD's path to/through the D4 regional is Toledo Christian (District), Antwerp (District), Lima CC (Regional) plus 1 other team mixed in at the regional level.

Lima CC is right there with Ottawa Glandorf and Findlay as far as results.

Taking transitive property to extremes here......

Lima CC 56 Ottawa Glandorf 54
Findlay 49 Ottawa Glandorf 47

Findlay 67 Whitmer 45
Whitmer 84 Perrysburg 57

I admit that there are games when kids don't show up and/or there are some matchups that are better/worse than others.

****EDIT: Might not have to go thru Lima CC (Wapakoneta District) - Not sure it that district goes to BGSU.
Yeah. Transitive property is probably one of the mathematical properties that for sure do not work when it comes to basketball. Perrysburg would for sure be one of the top D4 teams in northwest Ohio. Well coached, decent athletes all over the floor. Good shooters. There isn’t a team in D4 that can apply pressure like Whitmer. Not even Richmond Heights (Whitmer punked them in a scrimmage) Rucki’s ability to have guards that don’t get sped up and have great ball control are why they ran through Whitmer and Lima. Although I do see MVCD having a good chance of getting put out early. I think they just take too many awful shots and it will catch up with them eventually.

And then add to the transitive property that Delphos St. John's (D4) just beat Lima Central Catholic 58-53. And DSJ's has 2 losses to Elida and Lima Shawnee.....which lost to LCC by 26.

Matchups play a big role in HS hoops.

What's going on in the Northern Buckeye Conference?
Eastwood in 1st place now.

Eastwood 5-1
Genoa 4-2
Fostoria 4-2
Lake 4-3
Oak Harbor 4-3

Kind of figured one of Genoa, Fostoria, or Oak Harbor would be a top the standings.

According to the Blade today...... Northwood is leaving the TAAC for SBC River

Kids transfer from school to school, schools transfer from league to league. Both HS and college. The era of short term expectations or Im taking my ball and leaving. Just like a bad start to a video game. Just hit the re-start button, everything bad goes away, and you get a fresh start clean of any adversity. Rinse and repeat throughout life. No one should stay were they aren't wanted and no one should turn down better opportunities if they are presented with them. Some of this is just the way it is nowadays and Im just the old fool lamenting the development. But, there is something to be said for tenacity, loyalty, and overcoming bad situations. Or at least there used to be.

The Northwood dynasty is set to commence in the 25-26 seasons. Can't see many of the schools in the river being able to compete year to year in any of the sports. What a move for Northwood. Hopewell could present a challenge from time to time in football but baseball and basketball are shoe-ins.

Probably. What a weak move.

So far in 2024 Central Catholic basketball is as low as it's ever been. Only 6 freshmen show up to a game, JV team has 3 players who have never played high school basketball before. Varsity has only 10. Head coach Floyd is the king of social media but after last night's loss, maybe one of the worse in program history, no box score called in, no recap in the Blade and no post-game score update from the teams very active social media accounts. He's 0-3 against his 2 local rivals and he has only one fall back excuse, again this year like many before, "well were young". Would the Irish be young with Pike, Leach and others? Just to show you what kind of guy is leading this program, the day of the P'Burg game the team makes it's typical social media posting announcing the game, for the P'Burg game he used a freshman who isn't even on the varsity, because that kid is from P'Burg. That's how simple and stupid he is, flexing on Boyce and P'Burg through social media. Hope the administration on Cherry St is paying attention before other top talent flocks away.....

I mean, is he not wrong when he says "we are young?" Every single impact player he has is an underclassmen in a league and division that churns out D1 talent yearly, something that everyone KNEW was going to make it a tough league. They have one kid who should be playing in the post and two who have been "playing tall" since last year (their only upperclassmen). Yeah they lost talent, especially with Leach, but who hasn't Whitmer pulled thus far?

Whatever grievances you have with Floyd other than "social media" (if football doesn't meet expectations, do you react the same?) or a valid reason as to why they're behind their (very good) competition, you've been neither forthcoming nor specific with them.

I'm surprised you weren't calling for his head when he had the same record and predicament in 2021. Then 2022 came along and what, they had their best season in eight or so years? But not because the young talent he had grew up and matured, right? One down year doesn't mean it's time to blow everything up. Let them grow up another year.

It’s a lot of factors.

1st they are young.

2nd they are in a league that they do not belong in (none of the Toledo teams belong up there. The only team any of them have a chance to get ahead of is DCC and that won’t be for long)

3rd he has trouble keeping kids happy there. Leach(D1 kid), Pike (would help a lot this year), Kid went to Rogers, Hornbeak (D1 kid), Jones back to Whitmer and Jaynes back to Whitmer. Countless other kids not happy. I am not sure why but kids don’t like playing there.

At the end of the day though he has seen some post season success which is good for him.

As far as basketball right now with the conference they are in. They will never compete for a league title so the regular season is what it is. They will get absolutely thumped against the really good teams because offfense is always a struggle for them. But they will always have a chance at post season success because they are in D2 northwest Ohio.

I can't blame Northwood for picking up their ball and leaving the TAAC. Seriously, going up against three privates that have notoriously recruited in the last decade at the small school level is another level of absurd. I'm sorry, but TAAC teams don't get La Lumiere to show up randomly unless you have big time talent on the floor. Or for that matter have a kid start at Emmanuel, then proceed to transfer to La Lumiere. Northwood has every right to bail on the TAAC in these regards, and hope they can find a home that suits them. That said, considering their D3 most years in a lotta sports, their choices of homes aren't exactly numerous.....

Just watched the 1Q of the Brother Rice/TCC game on BCSN.

1. It was only 19-16 at the end of 1Q. Which means TCC only scores 19 the rest of the game. Yikes.

2. Brother Rice is HUGE. They start 6-8, 6-6, 6-5, 6-5 and 6-4. The two tallest kids are only Sophomores. One of which is the Pistons head coach, Monty Williams, son Elijah (6-6 Sophomore) who is also ESPN's #6 overall rated prospect in the 2026 class.

3. It's amazing Brother Rice has lost 5 game overall (4 out of the last 5) and is only 10-5. Shows how good the Detroit Catholic league is.

4. Brother Rice is #12 overall in the state of MI, according to Max Preps. The Detroit Catholic League has 3 teams in the Top 6, 4 in the Top 12 and 5 in the Top 15. Pretty impressive.

5. TCC only lost to #6 Catholic Central 64-59. SJJ lost 77-75 and St. Francis just lost 64-53. So really, outside of TCC's lopsided loss to BR, the Toledo teams are playing fairly respectable. SJJ lost to #1 St. Mary's Prep 61-49 a couple of weeks ago and only lost 72-63 to #4 U of Detroit Jesuit. SJJ, as a reference, is only ranked #65 in Ohio.

SJJ had a 17 point lead in the 3rd quarter against DCC and a 1 point lead going into the 4th quarter against UD Jesuit. I believe TCC also lost a late lead against DCC. If they could have finished those games stronger, the Toledo vs Detroit scoreboard would look much better.
