The Official 2023 Cincinnati Reds Thread

Yes but comparatively, he’s a seasoned vet. He’s played more games than all three combined so I get where RR is coming from. But if he accepts that role, I’d love to keep him. I don’t think he’d be super happy with it though and I don’t blame him.
He doesn’t have a choice.

I would love to keep him too as a DH and to give McClain a rest. I’m not sure the Reds see it that way and he is limited to only playing 2B. He seems to be the odd man out
He definitely has a role he can play next year for the Reds.

They need to decide if he is more valuable in that role or in a trade.

Figures - all the jerks and illiterate morons show up when the Reds get eliminated.

Great season by the young Reds, I am looking forward to years of contending teams. You three sad clowns only see negative. Enjoy your miserable lives.
I’ve been here all summer buddy.

Nothing wrong with having a seasoned vet at age 27 around. He's a really good ball player. India does not get to decide his role. He cannot be a free agent. He strikes me as the type of guy who will give 100% and make plays in whatever role he is given.

They aren’t going to cut him obviously.
He is cheap as an upcoming arb1 player.

The Reds will shop him and listen to offers as they should. The offer(s) will determine if his value is as a Red or in a trade. Either way he will bring value to the club.

I would think he knows he is going to be shopped, he sure sounded like he thought he won’t be back

Of course he'll be shopped. They shopped him at the trade deadline.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the offer will be good enough to move him though.

I’m fine if he’s back as a DH and reserve infielder. He is limited as a bench player defensively tho

The Reds have Hunter Greene under contract next season and will likely decline the option on Votto and Casali which means Griffey jr could be the second highest player on the payroll next season if they don’t add FA's.

One more year for that payment. The Reds are set up financially and talent wise for some success in the next several years. Here’s hoping they don’t screw it up

Yep.

It'll be interesting to see how they proceed. Will they spend $80M in the offseason or will they stay cheap?

No way they’re spending much of anything. I can see them maybe trying to get a middling pitcher but that’s about it. Maybe they will surprise me but I doubt it

Last I heard Miami is in. So I guess finishing the game isn’t necessary.
They have a half game lead over Arizona. A loss to the Mets ties them with Arizona. They must have the tie breaker if they don’t need to finish the game.

I'd imagine Arizona would prefer playing Philly with the 5 seed.

Yes, I guess that the case.

We have lots of time to discuss who's going to be here in '24 and who's not. Just wanted to wrap up some thoughts for this week. The Reds went into the week in basic playoff mode, every game was potentially an elimination game, and from 9/22 with the Pirates series, you go 3-5 and miss the playoffs. It just was a culmination from August 1, when the Reds were in first place in the NL central (remember that) to missing the playoffs. You go 10-17 in August, and 13-14 in September. Everyone is to blame, starting pitching was inconsistent, bullpen had some epic meltdowns and the offense simply wasn't good enough for the lack of starting pitching we had.
Like alot of others, I'll congratulate this team up and down for coming a LONG way in one season. But this is where we draw a mark on the wall and say this is the standard from now on and not backslide.
Lots of good this season, still some bad and we'll have months to disect and discuss.

The offense averaged 4.79 per game from August 1 on. They averaged 4.81 for the season. The offense wasn't the problem as they scored the 9th most runs in the league this year.
The pitching let them down and it was mostly injuries/covid that did them in as well as overuse of the bullpen.
The disappointing thing is many of us rightly identified that as a weakness prior to the trade deadline and yet the front office really didn’t do anything to address that area.

It cost them down the stretch.

The front office has to do better in the future. There is no guarantee they will be in a playoff hunt in the future so when you have that shot you have to pull the trigger.

Agreed. It was a surprisingly good season. Hopefully they will build on it in the offseason.

eh....i trust your numbers, but the 19-2 game the other night slurs those figures. This team lost too many games scoring 3 or less runs. From teams in the past, ok, but this team has too much offensive talent to score that few of runs that often. Don't get me started on the covid crap, as far as I can tell, no other team had players miss due to covid. I've been on record here stating I'm not buying Hunter Greene's mid season sabatical for a hip injury that we really saw nothing from. He looked the same before and after he returned. No one asks the club any pointed questions about this and to me, they were simply saving his innings this season. Would had been nice to have those 10 starts he missed.

There is no guarantees as we know, but this team has an incredibly bright future. I just hope they "go for it" and not play 3/4's of the season like it's exhibition games. Everyone makes a big deal about these games the last few weeks, but you know, the games in May mean just as much at the games in September, they all count as 1 game.

And it was more than a surprisingly good season, it was historic. The Reds have brought up kids before, but no where near the success these guys had. There are very few spots up for grabs going into 2024. We'll have months to figure that out, we know who the main characters for the 2024 will be.

Lol. I think the Reds front office also helped fake the moon landing in 1969, masterminded the Jan 6 insurrection, and shot JR Ewing. Those bastards!

They lost 24 games in the final two months when they scored 4 or fewer runs.

The Reds lost 7 games in the final two months while scoring 5 or more runs.
They lost 5 in the first two months.

That's an indication the pitching was to blame.
