Schools with a color in their name but that color isn’t one of their colors

Uniontown Green has no green in their uniforms but instead are orange and black. I have no idea why but if you know I’d like to hear the back story. My question is are there any others schools that are like this?

When Green started their football program they were a rural area between Akron and Canton with Massillon down the road. Massillon Washington gave them old uniforms and of course the colors were orange and black...there you go. Funny part us their nickname is Bulldogs like Canton Mckinley the arch rival of Massillon Washington!

I know some that kinda fit?
Jamestown Greeneview, red and blue
Greenon, red and black
Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets, orange and black
Bowling Green, red and white
interesting enough, some Greenon athletic teams over the years have used Green alternate uniforms

The Greeneview Rams have nothing to do with the color, they are located in Greene County, Ohio. Two most famous grads would be Gary Bradds of OSU hoops fame, and also played in the NBA. Roland James, who played for the New England Patriots for several years also is a Ram.

they have a great tradition for sure! I do wonder how they got the name Greeneview. Yes they are in Greene county, but what about the View part?

Very cool thread

Although they don't have football, you could throw White Oak High School in Mowrystown into the mix (orange and black).

This is common elsewhere too.

The most notable might be Bowling Green, Kentucky.

They're the Bowling Green Purples.

I took this thread to mean schools in Ohio, with the color in the town's name. I'll go with:
Orange High School is in Pepper Pike.
Greenville Green Wave is in Greenville.

Schools with a color in the name that don't wear that color.

Both Orange and Greenville wear their color.

Greenon is a combination of Enon Schools and Green Township Schools, sometime in the 50s. I believe Enon's colors were red and white and I can only assume Green was black. However, as long as I can remember, early 1980's, Greenon's official school colors were black and white with red being an accent. Now it seems red is becoming more of a staple in their colors. They also were a Block G logo and now seem to have adopted the Green Bay G, which I think happened in the early 2000s.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that, if you walk outside from the school, anywhere you look you will have a view of Greene County?

It is interesting to hear the back stories on how areas got their name. Usually it's in honor of a founding father, pioneer, Native American hero/tribe etc. But sometimes its kind of lame like "when Grover McMillain came upon the ridge and looked over the valley, he thought it was very pleasant. From that day forward it was known as Pleasant Valley."

i think red is going away now (thank goodness). only sports i see it in are volleyball and wrestling. i would be interested to see the block G logo you mentioned. i am a fan of the Green Bay G logo they use

Although this isn't related to the traditional sports. But isn't Matt Brown the UFC Fighter also from Greeneview? He's a guy with 26 career fights in the UFC which is very impressive. That's quite the list of athletes from one small town high school. Even though I'm not sure if Brown played any sports in HS.

Mt Vernon is the one that always makes me scratch my head. What came first - the name (Yellow Jackets) or the colors (Orange & Black)? Or did they start with yellow and they had a laundry problem and then just stayed with it?

Brown was born and raised in Jamestown, Ohio. After being home schooled for two years, he attended Greeneview High School.

On a side note - I always found it a little funny that Aurora are the GreenMen. Their womens' teams would naturally be the GreenWomen, right? Nope - they are the Lady GreenMen. Aurora was trans before it was cool.
Just like Garrettsville Garfield the G-Men..their lady teams are also the G-Men...

Greenon was black and silver when we played them in 1982. They only had home unis that year for some reason so it’s the only time a Milton-Union team wore its away jerseys at home. We won that game. Greenon was highly touted that year. I believe the score was 18-8. I was expecting a green and white team and was somewhat shocked at the black unis with sliver and white.

Personal pet peeve of mine. Like Lady Bulls or Lady Rams.

Then you have some that take it too far the other direction. Rimersburg Union in PA is the Knights and their girls teams are the Damsels.
