Bobcats endure tough day at Barnesville Diamond Classic​

BARNESVILLE — The Barnesville grounds crew work tirelessly the last two days to prepare and keep the diamond at Memorial Park in playable condition for the annual Brad Wilson Diamond Classic.

The field was more than playable, that was the good news. The bad? Cambridge lost its first two games of the 2022 campaign, each in an entirely different fashion.

The Bobcats fell to the host Shamrocks, 5-4, in an 8-inning classic during the first game of the afternoon, before running out of arms in a 7-1 loss to Fredericktown.

Admittedly, however, the first loss was the more difficult of the two to stomach.
Following a scoreless first, the visitors drew first blood when Drew Yanico ripped a groundball through the left side of the infield and into the grass. The result saw both Caden Moore and Davion Bahr score while Yanico advanced to second on the throw home.

The turning point came an inning later. Barnesville’s Gavin Carpenter hit the first batter of the inning, walked the second, then gave up a line drive single into right by opposing hurler Jake Valentine. A strong relay in from right kept a run from scoring, but the ’Cats had the bases juiced with nary an out.

Carpenter buckled down and proceeded to strike out the Bobcats’ Nos. 4, 5, and 6 hitters to end the threat. That inability to push just one more run across home plate came back to bite Cambridge a few innings later.

“We just didn’t get that timely hit,” Cambridge head coach Jamaal Lowery offered. “I thought we’d score one or two more that inning and be sitting a bit more comfy. But Barnesville is a good team. We knew they were tough but you hate to lose one like that.”
The “that” Lowery referred to happened during the seventh inning. Valentine was cruising on the mound, carrying a no-hitter into the potential final inning.

Jeremy Hunkler reached on an error to start the inning, followed by back-to-back base hits from Carpenter and Kyvan Johnson. Johnson’s liner to right scored Hunkler.

Spencer Bliss drove in Carpenter when he reached first via another error. Valentine managed to get out of the inning without any further damage. But now the score was knotted at 2-2 heading into extras.

“He was on and carried that no-no into the seventh inning,” Lowery said. “I think he had only 70 pitches going into that final inning. He was spotting his pitches really well. But a couple bloops later and it’s a different ball game.”

Valentine, Bryce Murdock, and Moore singled in succession to start the top half of the eighth, giving Cambridge a 4-2 lead.
But that only set the stage for Barnesville’s Spencer Bliss a half-inning later.

A Carpenter triple cut the deficit to 4-3. Taison Starr bounced into a fielder’s choice, reaching first as the ’Cats went home to get Carpenter out.
Bliss took two balls, then watched strike one fly ball. But the Shamrocks’ senior didn’t waste another pitch, taking relief pitcher Keaton Kyser’s offering deep over the fence in left for a walk-off, two-run blast.

Bliss finished with three RBI to lead the Shamrocks.

Kyser was on the opposite end of the long ball in the second game, as his solo shot provided the only run against the Freddies in the 7-1 defeat.
