Random Thoughts and Musings From Suburbia....

My Daughter Is Officially a Buckeye!

Well, this past week, we took my oldest daughter down to Columbus to tour the OSU campus, and sign her up for the fall semester later this year. She got her acceptance letter to Ohio State about a month ago, and she decided that OSU was where she wanted to go shortly after that.

Not only did she get accepted, she qualified for full scholarships through OSU, because she had such fantastic grades in high school. Also, due to the fact that she is a minority, she also got two other scholarships that were for minorities only that had a certain cumulative GPA. She's been busy filling out all kinds of scholarship applications so my mom and I won't have to pay for her school. And then, my Dad's best friend's son, who is an anesthesiologist (which is what Caitlin wants to be), and who has been mentoring Caitlin throughout high school, gave her some money for her tuition as well! I though that was SO cool of him! He has been having Caitlin come to the hospital where he works, and letting her sit in on surgeries and go on rounds with him, and such.

She's super excited to be a Buckeye, and stay in the dorms down there. She's going to room with her best friend Jessica from high school, being as they are both going to be Pre-Med students. Caitlin is graduating later next month from Jackson with honors, and she's ranked 11th in her class. I'm SO incredibly proud of her! She's the most level headed, responsible, intelligent kid I've ever met, and she's turned out to be such a wonderful adult. I just hope that all of my kids turn out to be exactly like her. She's every parent's dream- no problems, never gets into trouble, is always home on time, helps out around the house, and she has totally stepped up since my Dad died and has been helping Mom sort through wills, and paperwork, Dad's belongings, and such and hasn't had to be asked to do any of it. I am always so amazed at what a great kid she is. She has turned out better than I could have ever hoped or imagined. I'm so proud to be her mother. I really am.

So now, we'll get to go to OSU games with her and everything I'm really excited for her and I wish her the very best with her college experience!

GO BUCKS!!

A few Easter pics- we visited Dad's grave at Oakwood Cemetery in Cuyahoga Falls to put some flowers there for him (and a little windmill toy from Jack for Grandpa), and then at my cousin Mark's house in Stow for Easter dinner. Jack wore his very first suit, and I thought he looked really cute, and very grown up! We had a great day and it was really nice to visit with my Mom's sister's family for the day. There were about 30 of us there for dinner and it was super good.

P.S. Ignore the date stamp on the pics. I forgot to reset it after charging the camera battery. Oops.

Tweet, Tweet, Tweet....

Are you still not using Twitter? I know that a lot of people think it's just another Social media time waster, but it's actually pretty informative and helpful in various ways, depending on how you use it, and who you follow, and who follows you.

Just so you can see what I mean by that, check out the link below. I've already found some really excellent information for a business I plan on starting soon on there, as well as some great contacts in my area for things I was looking for. I absolutely LOVE Twitter!

Top Ten Tips for Twitter....and Life

The buzz this year is all about Twitter, the ‘microblog’ service.

Both the web and twitter are full of pleas from people who say they don’t ‘get it’. In a nutshell, the point of twitter is to post very short updates - no more than 140 characters. It’s a bit like a txt msg for the web, on ‘what you’re doing now’. These tweets can be links to cool sites you’ve found, conversations with other twitter users, questions you want a quick answer for, what you’re having for dinner or even haiku poetry.

The main difference between twitter and txt is: when you send it out it goes out to everyone who’s opted to follow you. On the receiving end, you’re getting these updates from everyone you’ve chosen to follow. This constant flow of short messages to and from is called the ‘twitter stream’. It can be a bit overwhelming at first. Just like modern life. In fact, it occurred to me that the people who ‘get it’ and rave about it the most are the very same people who have achieved vast levels of success in this information age. So, here’s my take on the top 10 success tips for twitter… and Life!

1. Fluff and filler are no longer an option. Nobody has time/interest in reading them. Get to the point.

2. Be real. 140 chars is cut to the bone - you can’t wear a fake character on top and still fit.

3. Pick what’s important. You could use twitter to talk about your day down to the bowel movements, but then you’d have nobody following you. People follow you on twitter because what’s important to you is a match with what’s important to them, so share it!

4. To keep the relationship alive, feed it. Share yourself, and your interests, and give stuff that matches the other person’s interests.

5. Don’t take following/unfollowing personally - as interests change, people will come and go. Faster than in real life, but no different. Accept it.

6. Don’t get overwhelmed. You don’t need to drink the river, just drink FROM it. (this is a major difference between big & small fish)

7. The big fish swim in big streams. They don’t try to control them, just swim in them.

8. Being part of that big stream is NOT a guarantee you’ll have their attention: a fish doesn’t swim through every drop of water on it’s way upstream.

9. To catch the attention of a big fish, you need to:

* send something past them just when they’re looking at that part of the stream;
* send something they’re looking for so they hunt it down; or
* send something so catchy/helpful/viral that others keep putting it in front of them for you.

10. Practice. Start small with a few friends, and gradually grow your circle of influence. Even if you could jump in with 10,000 followers, you probably wouldn’t know how to keep them long unless you’d developed the skill of catching and keeping interest. That skill will serve you well online and offline in ways you can’t imagine…

11. Have fun! The people having the most fun are the ones you most want to hang out with. Be one. (yes, I overdelivered again. Oops)

Texts From Last Night

I found a cute sight on Twitter. It's a user submitted site called "Texts From Last Night", and is exactly what it says it is.[

www.textsfromlastnight.com

I love their tagline: "Remember the text that you shouldn't have sent last night? We do."

A few of my favorites so far:

(319): addddeeerrraaaallll.
(641): ok i'm not sure if that was a success statement or a cry for help.

(714): He ignores my calls like im some kind of stalker chick
(714): Ive only called 5 times

(318): i either just vomited on a lesbian or a small boy

(812): Ummmm I went to see who was upstairs, he was the only one in his room so we had sex while the travel channel played in the background.
(917): Oh good. Romantic. Still, I'm jealous of the sex.
(812): Probably not, since he made me promise not to tell anyone it only lasted ten seconds.

(516): I dont like him- his parents came home and he hid me in his closet like anne frank

(803): I just saw the girl you left with - Chris Hansen's looking for you

Well, I'm now in Month 3.2 of my radial Nerve Palsy issue, and I just rolled over on my right hand, which sent shooting, sharp pain throughout my entire arm, which woke me up. So since I am waiting for my neurontin pain meds to kick in and start working so I can get back to sleep for a few hours till 6:30 when I get up to make Jordan her breakfast (yeah, like I'll get back to sleep...meh), I thought I'd post a very helpful link for you guys.

These are a few time management tips that a friend sent me a while back that I've found actually work for me. And since I'm normally terrible with time management, I figured that if they helped me, they can help just about anyone.

Graduation!!!

Well, I am officially the parent of a high school graduate, and an adult!

My oldest child, Caitlin, graduated from Jackson High School on June 3rd. Then, she turned 18 on June 16th. And we also had her graduation party this past Sunday. Whew- it's been a whirlwind month so far!

I just can't believe that I have a child heading to college this fall. And I especially can't believe that I have a child who is technically no longer a child. If I weren't for the fact that I'm also the parent of a 2 year old toddler, I'd feel pretty old right about now...lol

I'm so incredibly proud of Caitlin, too. She didn't just graduate, she graduated with honors, and with a cumulative 4.8 GPA (cumulative means that all four years of your high school grades are added up and averaged into one GPA). She was able to receive higher than a perfect 4.0 average from taking a lot of AP classes every year, and she was also a member of National Honor Society. In addition to all of that, Caitlin attended Kent State's Stark Campus her senior year in the afternoons, as part of Jackson's Advanced Placement program, so she already has a few college credits before even starting her first day of college. Although, even though she had a pretty high GPA, she wasn't even close to what their valedictorian and salutatorian had! The valedictorian had a cumulative 5.2 GPA, which is a new highest GPA record for Jackson High School, and their salutatorian had a 5.0 GPA. That's just crazy! I've never in my life heard of someone getting a 5.0 or 5.2 GPA- especially at a school like Jackson, where the curriculum is a bit more difficult than a lot of surrounding area schools.

Caitlin has already been accepted to Ohio State, and is going to be a Pre-Med major, and she plans to attend medical school after getting her bachelor's degree to become an anesthesiologist. She has always been a very precise, meticulous and detail-oriented type of person, so I think she'll do really well in the medical field.

In fact, she's SO meticulous with things (her clothes in her closet are organized by type-pants, skirts, long sleeved and short sleeved shirts, etc., and then by color, and each and every clothes hangar is exactly 2" apart from each other. Her dresser drawers are the same way.) She's so majorly organized, that it's almost like she has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but at least she's not a slob, or the type of kid who wads their clothes in a ball and tosses them in a corner or under their bed.

And besides, I think that being super meticulous and organized could only be good traits to posses if youwant to go into the medical field. Especially in something such as anesthesiology, where you HAVE to be meticulous and exact- because if you aren't, your patient could wind up paralyzed. Or dead.

Anyways, we all had a super fun time at graduation and her party. A lot of my family showed up for the graduation ceremony. I think Caitlin had somewhere around 45 people there for her that night. My ex-husband and his whole family traveled up from Kentucky to be there. My best friend Terry went with me as well, and we both got all teary eyed when she walked across the stage to receive her diploma. The only thing that kept it from being a totally perfect event was the fact that my Dad wasn't there to share it with us.

Dad bragged to anyone who would listen about Caitlin, and how intelligent she is, and how she was planning on becoming a doctor. He was SO proud of his "Bug" (a nickname I gave her at age 18 months that has stuck throughout her whole life so far), and he was so excited about her graduation ceremony. He used to tease Caitlin that he fully expected her to take care of and support him in his old age after she became a successful doctor and was "making the big bucks", as Dad would say. But I know he's watching from up in Heaven, and I know he cheered for Caitlin as she walked across the stage at the Canton Civic Center to get her diploma, and that he is STILL proud of her.

That one needs no added comment.

123270.jpg

Amy Winehouse: I had no idea that meth addicts took time out of their busy schedule of tweaking to go to the beach. Who knew?

123822.jpg

Yes, it does. And there are even coins that goes with it, too!

123211.jpg

Juliette Lewis: Hey! I have the exact same outfit! Seriously, though, all she needs is a giant clock necklace, and she's all set....Booooooooi!

123612.jpg

Memo to Fox News: Trying to be hip and funny FAIL. Just don't.

123094.jpg

Tara Reid: I call this one "Bleach and Bones". Seriously, get this girl a cheeseburger.

123085.jpg

KFed: This is what happens when your entire diet consists of shots of Jeagermeister and Cheetos. Perhaps he should ask Tara Reid for some dieting advice. Or just change his name to KOverfed.

122900.jpg

Donatella Versace: You know that saying that says "You can never be too rich or too thin"? I beg to differ on the "too thin" part. You can also be too tan, have too much bad plastic surgery, too many collagen lip injections, be too blond, be wearing a bikini that shows too much, and have lipstick that is way too pale. Good God. Just no.

122899.jpg

Al Pacino: Ok, now I love me some Al Pacino, and I hate to pick on him, but this is just wrong. I don't know which is the most disturbing- the white bird poo/melted ice cream/Monica Lewinsky stuff on his shoulder, the tux jacket/deep "V" neck/long chain combo he's chosen to wear in the middle of the day, or the fact that he's wearing my grandmother's wig.

122596.jpg

George Clinton: Now that's a rainbow I definitely DON'T want to taste.

122574.jpg

Weiners: Martha Stewart likes 'em BIG!!

122579.jpg

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen: Millions of middle-aged men's dreams finally come true! Oh, wait, there's too many people around and they still have clothes on.....Darn it, SO CLOSE!!!

122128.jpg

Fergie: She's already proven that she has no problem peeing herself on stage. So I guess she feels it's time to take it up a notch.

I'm sure that a lot of you have already seen this clip, but it's too funny not to post, so I'm putting it on my blog. It's definitely the most imaginative way to come down the wedding aisle that I've ever seen. I love it!

Funeral #2 For My Dad

I'm really dreading today. At 1:00 this afternoon, my family has to go up to Oakwood Cemetary in Cuyahoga Falls, where my Dad is buried, and watch him get buried again.

When my Mom & Dad purchased their grave plots last summer together, they were in this really pretty area of the cemetery that they both really like, and that has a pretty view of the rest of the cemetery. Apparently, it's a popular area of the cemetery, because the sales director of Oakwood, who sold them their plots last year, turned around and sold them AGAIN- after they had already been sold to my parents- to some other couple.

Then, when my father died this past February, and the hearse pulled into Oakwood for the graveside part of the service, those of us who were riding in the limo with my Mom were told by Mom that they were going the wrong way, and that the site they had dug up for my Dad wasn't the plot she had purchased. We have no idea whose grave it actually was, but my Mother didn't want to cause a scene at the funeral service, so she let them bury him there until the next day when she could get it all straightened out with the cemetery sales director.

When she did contact him, he kept telling her that the grave where they buried Dad was the one she and Dad had purchased. She kept arguing with him over the next few months, and when she finally told him that she had all the paperwork from the cemetery that showed that she had purchased those other graves in the nice area, and that she would be contacting the police and taking her paperwork with her to show them he finally admitted that he had sold them to someone else after my pare ts bought them

So all this time, my Dad has been in some other person's grave, and we haven't been able to order his head stone or anything, because we were waiting to move him to the spot that is supposed to be his. So that's what we're doing tomorrow at 1:00.

I'm glad we're getting this taken care of, but on the other hand, I'm sad, because it's like going through his funeral all over again, which makes me sad.

I just miss him so much and I hate thinking of him being in the ground like that. I know when I see the vault that the casket is in that I'm going to want to see him again, knowing that he's only a few feet away from us, but I'm sure that he doesn't look the same as the last time we saw him at his funeral, so it's best that we can't see him.

I just want him back so much that it hurts me every single day. I'd really rather not even go up there tomorrow, but my mother wants my sister and my kids, and my Dad's two siblings to go up there with her, so we all said we would.

Man, it just seems that crappy things just keep happening in my life and I really wish they'd stop. between all of my health issues and people in my family dying and such, it's been a really awful past year. It's going to be great when things start to improve.

But, for tomorrow, I just want to make it through this whole, ordeal and be there to support and be strong for my Mom. I know that's what Dad would have wanted for me to do, and that's what I've been doing for him since he passed away.

I love and miss you, Daddy.
