Girls OHSAA state cross country championships started in 1978. For the first four years, they only ran two classes, A and AA competed together. Three classes didn't start until 1982.

Not true. The 1982 results shows 3 classes for girls. https://www.ohsaa.org/Portals/0/Sports/Cross Country/Past Tournament Results/1982cc.pdf
You're nitpicking terminology. Before they were referred to as Divisions, they were called classes. Thus Class A became Division I, Class AA became Division II, Class AAA became Division III

In 1989 they went to two divisions for girls. I wasn't trying to nitpick about whether they were classes or divisions. I am curious as to why they only ran two races for girls from 1989 to 1993. I'm pretty sure it had to do with low participation. This had a direct effect on the team that I was coaching, as we were one of the smallest DI schools in 93. You were certainly right about 82 results.

They went back to 2 divisions for girls because they were below the 500 school cutoff for a third division at the time.

Girls are in danger of going back to 2 divisions. The turnout at the district meets was horrible. If OHSAA wanted to they could drop it back to 2 divisions. Most district races, for girls, were underrepresented.

Makes you wonder if need to do what college does and have the girls run a shorter race like 4k? Would that even help get more girls out for CC. I am not sure it would.
