New Men's Program in 2012-13

I really am surprised more colleges don't try to start men's volleyball programs. How much "marginal cost" is there to set one up?

You already have a gym and all of the equipment needed if you have a women's volleyball program. The women play in the fall, and the men play in the spring. So, there wouldn't be any scheduling conflicts.

You have to pay for what? Some uniforms, shoes, and an extra stipend to the women's coach to get things off the ground? That strikes me as a relatively low figure.

Compare that to something like lacrosse, which takes all sorts of equipment to get started, and a coach that probably doesn't even exist at all yet at your college. Men's volleyball would be a total bargain by comparison.

Its great that collegiate club teams exist and provide another venue for playing the sport. However their success is being used as a copout by collegiate athletic directors. Most ADs don't have the *&#%$ to approach their administrations with proposals for varsity programs even though they realize they would be very successful. That is the main reason more colleges and universities don't start men's programs.

It is tough to have a varsity team at a university that is successful when all the scholarships are currently in other programs, leaving the volleyball team to very little, to none. All the 'good athletes' wont be heading to a university that doesnt offer them money or financial aid. Most big universities are going to have their scholarships in the football and basketball teams. I know at least for UC, they have plenty of players on their womens varsity team that are on scholarship. Not to mention they are really good, top 25. But as for the mens side of the title ix predicament, the football team gets a whole bunch of that scholarship money. Especially with the recent success with the team (minus this past year). Its not that people wont step up and say they want a team. Its not that easy to start a successful team.
