Massillon asks to join Fed

FYI - If you haven't read, here's the Repository article from Sunday's newspaper:

Massillon applies to Federal

Each year the presidency of the Federal League rotates among member schools’ superintendents. This year, Boardman is in charge of league matters. Last week, Massillon Superintendent Al Hennon sent a letter to Boardman to officially request joining the league.

The league isn’t likely to admit Massillon this year or even next. However, Hennon would like to be considered as soon as the league either expands or another member of the eight-team league drops out.

Hennon’s letter also tries to clear up miscommunication that transpired between Massillon’s former athletic administration and league members four years ago when the Federal League expanded with McKinley, Fitch and Boardman.

Let em in

I say get rid of Fitch and Boardman and let Massillon and either Green or Wadsworth in. But, with Boardman's AD running the league this year, that isn't going to happen.

I have NO desire to cater to any of the Massillon wishes.
I still have some very deep anger with the football program and the booster club for pulling some of the things they pulled over the last few years.

I think they need th $$$ that being in the Federal League would bring. It is becoming extremely difficult for Independants to schedule games now. THey made their bed, they sleep in it as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not saying let Massillon have their way...they have to play by Fed rules. I think they'll do this because of the need to be in a league and the benefits they get (McKinley saw the same thing). Massillon gets a better visitor gate with NC than with the Weak Sisters of the Poor and they don't have to pay a guarantee. NC gets a better visitor gate with Massillon than with Fitch. We just need to get past Massillon's desire that everyone have a bigger visitor section to satisfy their faithful.

No, They need to get past that.

I guess that the Mass coach is an ordained minister. Maybe they are trying to repent from the nasty Sheep$%^ days.

I guess I have to see the booster club and fans in general move away from all the past stuff they pulled. A part of that is getting over the visitor stands at federal league schools. The fed stadiums IS WHAT THEY IS.

I agree 100%, Fritz. As far as I'm concerned, they are still on probation with the Fed. Let's see how they act over the next few years. A tiger doesn't usually change his stripes.

As far as getting rid of Fitch and Boardman, this is not reality TV. We don't dump a contestant each week; participants leave on their own.

I feel that Massilon is a great team, but wont fit in with the Federal League. The Federal League follows the OHSAA rules very roughly. If Massilon does join the Federal League the will have problems with the recruiting rule and their players will have some problems with the Alcohal, Tobacco and other drugs rule. If Massilon does enter then a team must leave. The last I heard about this subject was about Boardman. I heard that Boardman is going to drop out either for the 2006 season or the 2007 season. I feel that instead of Massilon joining, Green should join and be brought in over Massilon. Fitch should stay because they are a tough team and always a challenge.

From what I've been hearing I would look for Boardman to get out as soon as they are allowed to by the rest of the league. It was one of the main issues discussed by the candidates running for school board and I thought one of them said we were stuck in the league for a total of 5 years no matter what(which would mean through the '07-'08 school year I think). Of the candidates running they all were leaning towards leaving the league(they based their idea on what people around the community were saying). I think only one of the candidates was dead set on staying, but he didn't win. The main problem right now though is what league would Boardman move to. I think the big issue is Boardman doesn't want to be in a league w/ the city teams and Warren Harding. I know a lot of people complained about WGH being uncompetitive in a lot of sports when we were in the SVC(although I think they've improved a little all-around). Also, right now Beaver Local and Warren JFK(D-5) are members of the SVC, which really don't seem like they would be good fits for Boardman all-around in sports. I think the travel costs along w/ the lack of attendence at Fed games has a lot to do w/ it. You can see when Boardman plays say a pretty good team like Hoover at home in basketball there are maybe 1000 people there. When we play even a team like Niles, who we played last night, there were a good 1800-2000 people. Games vs Poland, Canfield, Mooney, Fitch, etc are always near full crowds. Same goes for football. We're lucky if there are more than 500 fans come up from a visiting Stark County team to Boardman and that hurts when the majority of your opponents are from down there. If you replace them w/ any local team you probably get another 2000 fans at each game. The Federal is a great league, but its just an issue right now of time(travel wise) and money. I do hope if we leave we keep 2 or 3 Fed teams a year on all of our schedules.

I've said for awhile Boardman really needs to get into a league w/ Canfield, Poland, and Howland(which are all D2 schools, somewhat growing areas, and have good all-around sports programs). Although, I think Mooney and Ursuline need to be a part of anything we do since they've been long rivals. Harding pretty much also would be a part of the league since they've been affiliated w/ the SVC teams for a decent amount of years too. Problem is Canfield, Poland, and Howland probably want nothing to do w/ the SVC teams as far as a league, so it could be difficult. And I'm not sure Boardman and Fitch would be able to get into the Metro Athletic Conference w/o some of the smaller schools objecting. It is going to be real interesting to see what happens. I'm just hoping we don't go back to an SVC that is the same + 2 Youngstown City Schools, which will be a worse all-around sports league(city schools only offer 1/2 the sports we do) than what we were in 5-10 years ago.

Nothing wrong with competition. I for one have taken a disliking towards Massillon the past years playing them in non-league games and hearing them talk on here. BUT... They are always competitive and put up a good fight and would not mind playing them rather than a HORRIBLE boardman football and basketball team. It's a toss up if u ask me

Next football season being '06 or '07? 2006 would be a fairly quick move and I'd assume you really couldn't do much to change your scheduling anyhow so '07 would make more sense.

I would like to see Massillon in the Federal League.

Fitch and Boardman should go and Massillon and Green should apply.

Massillon will need to work hard to get up to speed in some sports. But it makes a lot of sense.

The Fed is already the top football league in Ohio, according to me. IMHO Adding Massillon would make it perhaps the strongest in the nation.

Lots of hurdles and bad blood to be dealt with. Ultimately, it would be good for everyone involved.

In short the league does not need Massillon ----- Massillon needs the league.
They would more than likely be at the top of the league in Football and once every few years in boys basketball, and as I recall the baseball program is better than average. As I recall there are about 20 other sports being played by the member schools and I seriously doubt that they would be competative in very many of those. Case in point McKinley- They are strong in about 4 sports and after that its lights out. Any arguments out there????

Yeah sure. Massillon isn't the only team... I think it's time to investigate the Hoover bowling team. They got some "ringers" on that team for sure.

Until these "roided up bowling powerhouse sensations" stop dropping out of the sky, then Hoover is as guilty as sin.

(relax, it's a joke)

The Federal league doesn't need Massillon, and we definately DON'T NEED their "fans." Do you really want to put up with that stupid chant they have at every game?

Thank you Viking Proud, i've been saying that for years. We don't need teams like them in the league. :Ohno:

Not to mention their behavior. A large percentage of their fans show up intoxicated and obnoxious. I've witnessed this at PBTS, Fawcett Stadium, The Rubber Bowl, and when they showed up in OUR parking lot for the playoff game a few years ago. I'll never forget the sight of the one Massillon "fan" shouting out in the parking lot "Hey North Canton, watch this" and he broke into a bad rendition of Chuck Berry's chicken walk to the pump up song "Rock and Roll' that Massillon's band plays about every three minutes. Who can forget their "fans" calling our AD in the middle of the night at his home to curse him for not getting tickets? For every one decent Massillon fan like Obie Girl or Tiger Voice Chris, there about 50 who take boorish, white trash behavior to another level. Who needs it?

Yes at the playoff game this year my neace took her little kids to the restroom and was yell'd at and called A north canton s---- by Mass. fans ( women ) do we want to listen to this whenever we play them every year in all sports?

As i said previously they need us we don't need them. Case in point, two years ago the girls put a hundred plus on them and thats all we heard was that Coach ran it up. Its only right when they do it. Who can forget Shepis or whatever his name was (they ran him out of town) throwing the ball in the last three minutes of the game even though they were up by at least 30. Tell them to play their independent schedule and be happy with it.

im in favor of adding Massillon. sure they have obnoxious fans but one true way to shut them up, or at least ruin their year, is to beat them which you can only do if you play them...and how much sweeter would it be to defeat them with the league on the line? they would only add competition in Football, Boys basketball and Baseball...who could argue with the Fed as the best public football league with the addition of the Tigers? a tradition rich league adding more tradition. and i dont think Boardman, Fitch or Lake have to leave either...Mckinley is the program most concerned about losing weeks on the schedule to league play but obviously they already play the Tigers and for the rest of the Fed losing a non league game to the addition of Massillon would be an upgrade over the current non league schedule in most years.

I must say that I am torn about this issue. One the one hand, I agree that the Massillon fans have no class (I was heckled by some drunk fans while leaving last season's playoff game at PBTS). I MIGHT be a little more tolerant of this behavior if they would occasionally win a state championship. But we all know that that just doesnt happen very often at Washington High School, don't we? On the other hand, I wan't a chance to beat these guys. This seems to be the 1 and only team we have yet to conquer (since we beat McKinley a couple seasons ago, they don't count anymore). Putting them in the Fed would certainly improve the league and give us our shot at them year after year. We would not have to schedule some scrub team from Washington DC or another D3 team. I am tired of scheduling weak non-league opponents. I am certainly not one to shy away from a challenge, and Massillon is certainly that.

Why are we still discussing this? Didn't they get turned down again? I though this was not an issue right now.
