Mason Invite - MILE ASSAULT !

Looks like the annual Angela Bizzari (Mason, '06) mile runs (1600m splits included) did not disappoint at last nights' Rod Russell Invite @ Mason.

2 boys under 4:10 for the mile, 4 under 4:10 for the 1600m
8 girls under 5:00 for the mile, 1 under 4:50, and 10 under 5:00 for the 1600m.

Bella Butler moves up to #8 all-time for the 1600m & #9 for the mile.

4x1s & 4x2s on both boys & girls comps were excellent, especially Moeller's wins of 41.41 & 1:25.99, both moving them into the top-10 all-time (I think...lists in progress). Moeller's relays remind me of the heady Moeller days of 1983-1985, headed up by Hiawatha & D'Juan Francisco and the rest of the Crusaders back then.

Wonderful race. Dyer made a decisive move from about 500 out and was the class of the field from there. Tied up just a bit on the homestretch, but the damage was done. He looks every bit a serious contender to give Loveland the back-to-back state title in the 1600.

As discussed on these boards prior, the depth of talent right now is unbelievable. 15 or 16 guys under 4:20 in a single regular season race is mind boggling.

With his en route time in the race, Hoover's Noah Johnson shattered his own 1600 school record and tied the all-time Stark County 1600 record right down to the hundredth. After making the 4-hour trip home, he competed on Saturday at the Optimist Meet and netted a big PR in the 800, missing his school's record in the event by a mere .11 seconds. It was a rather productive weekend for him.

Defending DII state champion Colin Cernansky of Marlington chipped a few tenths off his school record but is probably a little disappointed to have not run faster at Mason on Friday night after having beaten Johnson in both the 1600 and 800 two weeks ago at the Stark County Meet.

How about that girls race? 9 girls under 5:00 en route at the 1600 mark with 3 of them from the host school! Has there ever been another girls 1600 race in Ohio HS history where a sub-5:00 finisher did not score? Maybe it has happened at this meet before. I checked DI state results back through 2015 and found none. 2018 had the top 8 under 5:00, but 9th was just over 5:00.

Not sure about the depth, but that is a side-line project I've had in the back of my head for a few years to do what T&F News has done with their "best marks for place" lists. It took them years to put those together.

Since everyone likes to debate things on boards. Is the Mason Invitation (with the teams/athletes that they bring in) the best invitational in the state? It seems like the winning marks across the board and depth in events is pretty good! Bonus is that they were done by 9:15ish.

Not even sure Mason is tops in SW Ohio. Though they were down a bit this year Wayne would certainly have an argument.

It will be interesting to see how much the return of the Roosevelt meet at the refurbished Welcome Stadium next year affects Mason's field.

To the tune of tens of millions of dollars. Might turn out great and might also be lipstick on a pig.
I never liked track meets at Welcome. The only seating right at the finish line was reserved for coaches only. Seemed to me that the people that actually paid to get in should have access to best seats.

As for Roosevelt. This meet is not elite. It would take a company or reputable coach or company to turn this meet around. At this time in Ohio teams/coaches want to attend invites with reputable coaching staffs that are accountable. Dayton City schools are not accountable for running anything reputable.

A couple of thoughts as a coach that has been to both multiple times.

Wayne
Wayne is larger- 50+ partial teams every year.
Wayne has more depth and competition in every area 20+ deep
Wayne is LONGER. Thursday 3 until midnight. Friday 3 pm until midnight. It is physically draining for your team and coaching staff.
Wayne has rising star races for distance events, DMR, shuttle hurdles, and hammer throw. These are nice because as a distance coach you can get in 4 kids in each event if needed.
Wayne is two weeks from the league meet which is nice for a last-chance race before the league/conference. A lot of times this meet is the last weekend before humidity hits Ohio hard. Many times fast times are abundant at Wayne.
Wayne has Filipino food for coaches/pizza, wings, and other items in their spread.

Mason
Mason has 12-16 full teams and only partial people for the dream mile.
Mason has elite 12 teams.
Mason is one day. The Mason meet is over before 10 pm every year.
Mason's MILE is elite.
Mason's meet is the weekend before the league/conference meet. Tough to run/perform well every weekend and bounce back to run well at the league in 5-7 days later. Some kids/teams/coaches don't like to run/compete every weekend. Mason has a history of storms. For some reason, storms and humidity hit Ohio this weekend. But not this year.
Mason has a great coach's spread with food from 3-4 elite chain restaurants.

DPS did a fine job with the Relays this year. Despite the ongoing construction the meet came off without a hitch. Kids got a chance to meet Edwin Moses and you cant put a price tag on that. Looking forward to returning to Roosevelt next year(and beyond)

Know this post is about the mile/1600 mainly.. But being a Moeller alum I’m not only really impressed with the Crusaders 4x100 and 4x200 but also Tennel Bryant 21.81 200m I know he ran around 10.59-10.60 or something at state in the 100 last year but do not recall his 200 matching his 100 speed. 21.81 shows increased strength and speed endurance. He looked to get out extremely well in the 100m state finals last year before ending up 4th. The weather this season has been hit or miss to say the least. I think if he gets out like he did at state last year, and finishes strong yet relaxed..no headwind or slight tailwind he could push the 10.50 mark. Curious what the top wind legal times in the state are. Hope troy lane is running and healthy.. incredible athlete

The storms still came but just in time for the Flying Pig instead of Mason this year 😜

In all seriousness though, I was at Mason with one of our girls who was in the Bizzarri Mile and the weather could not have been better. It was a little warm earlier in the meet, but by the time the Bizzarris rolled around, it was dusk with no wind and absolutely perfect for distance running.

We were also at Wayne the week before and while it was better run than in years past (out by 10:00 Thursday night and 10:30 Friday night), I agree with you that it is an exhausting meet to coach and compete in. Overall, Wayne is the stronger meet but I think that is largely due to the increased number of teams. Per capita, they are probably pretty equal and Mason may actually be slightly ahead.

Fortunately, the long hours were not an issue with Wayne this year, and although there was a smaller field, then there was last year personally, I felt the competition was at a higher level. Wayne certainly did have an issue with late ending times last year though. Definitely appreciate Mason ending before 10.
