Mascots- Do you really find them offensive? or know anyone that finds them offensive?

This thread got my attention and was a curious read. I am a bit older so my answer is no, I am not offended nor do I know any folks that find mascots offensive. Make is easy like playing youth sports....Team Blue Vs. Team Orange at Field 1. Just rename all team names to colors or numbers. All sports, all levels.

I lie, I am offended by the Yankees. Not because of the northern reference but because they are the Yankees.

I used to think the whole Chief Wahoo debate was a little silly, then it struck me one day that who am I to judge what is offensive to a group of people?

I think society is going a bit overboard in a lot of areas right now, but there's no reason to retain a name that's essentially slur that offends a defined large group of people.

A couple weeks ago, a well meaning Doctor and State Senator from Tipp City lost his job for using the antiquated phrase “colored population” in a statehouse session.
The NAACP should immediately change its name in this current climate.
Post the whole comment he said. You’re leaving out the part that caused controversy.

Except "Redskins" is as derogatory as saying African Americans are black or that Irish are white.

I understand that there are some Woke! individuals who think saying African Americans are black or that Irish are white is racist.
lol no it isn't. In today's parlance, "black" is a widely-accepted and promoted connotation referring to people whose ancestry dates back to the African continent. Not everyone who is black in the US is "African-American" nor identifies as such. e.g. Bahamian-Americans, Haitian-Americans, the Creole.

Dock - you know using facts doesn't help an emotional argument.

This was an especially weird thing for him to say, for reasons not the least of which include [checks notes] his constituency of Miami County being one of the earliest sources of COVID-19 outbreak and surges in COVID-19 related death in the infancy of the coronavirus pandemic in Ohio back in March/early April.

I'm inclined to care less personally if a high school is called the "Redskins", because that's more a matter for themselves to hash out and none of them are remotely significant in the public eye. There's a difference between Utica High School and the Washington football team that plays in the NFL, though. I don't think Anderson, Utica or other Ohio HS's with the mascot are raking in beaucoup dollars on the licensing of its apparel the way that the professional football team for our nation's capital is. This would probably be a different discussion if this were the first time it was ever discussed. Dan Snyder repeatedly digging his heels in on this topic, though, is what's galvanizing the backlash toward changing their mascot.

Who are you? You don't get to decide what others feel is racist. Some people believe that recognizing any differences is racist.

Somewhere today I said the Washington Redskins should change their name to the Gridlocks or the Potomac Punters.

You realize some African Americans can be white. If I was born in South Africa as a white individual I could say I'm African American...

Not only do the nicknames and mascots suck they are also incredibly I'll fitting for most if not all schools. Sure natives lived in your region 200+ years ago but they sure don't live there anymore and trotting out a caricature of a tribal chief for your school that's 95% white isn't honoring anybody. Pick a mascot that represents your town and the history of it you can be proud of, don't just keep the one you have because it's been that way for as long as you can remember. There's 80+ schools in the state with nicknames based on Native people, you can't tell me there aren't better ones out there

If they change it I'd probably go with Warriors or Senators. It would be kind of cool to bring back the name Washington Senators.
If they were to change it to the "Senators", that would be the end of a tempo offense. They would need to discuss it at length before coming up with a play to run. They would lead the league in delay of game penalties.

Isn't it funny how those who don't think that some of these mascots are offensive are middle aged men who've never faced discrimination?

I find it particularly hypocritical that Daniel Snyder, who as a Jew should be sensitive to genocide, stood by a team name derogatorily referencing a group that faced genocide in his home country. Funny how he didn't find principle until it was about money with Nike, FedEx and Pepsi.

At a couple of nursing homes.

I have for more than thirty years consistently found fault with the school in Huber Heights for adopting the name Wayne High School. True, the school takes its moniker from Wayne Township. But the Township is named for Mad Anthony Wayne, the notorious Revolutionary General infamous for commanding his Warriors to slaughter indigenous people in this area. The school then had the gall to adopt the caricature of an indigenous person adorned with a prejudicial headdress as the team logo. Now that is absolute, for the lack of a better word, chutzpah.

You can’t win against someone claiming to be offended or that they are a “victim”. Your only stance can be to give in or go on record that you support something that hurts another person emotionally, which can cover a huge spectrum and possibly even be fabricated.

A large group of people, American Indian pop. in Ohio is less than 18000. and American Indians make up around 2 % of the American pop. Chief Wahoo never was an issue for American liberals for years now he is. Enough of the cancel culture.

Actually those Native American mascot names have been a problem for decades. They just weren't allowed to have a voice in the matter.

As previously mentioned, if people shouldn't be offended by team names, then the opposing group shouldn't be offended when it changes. It is just a name after all.
