Zappa is an acquired taste. Much of his catalog I do not like, but as you said, his band makes it work.

I dig most of his music but have to be in a certain mood to listen to it.
By the way this is a cool video on his music told by one of his key musicians, xylophone player Ruth Gordon.
The amount of crack musicians that played with him is incredible, probably the best of any modern "rock" musicians.
