Jerome wins fifth consecutive title

As it has for half a decade, the Dublin Jerome High School girls golf team found enough answers over a two-day period to leave with the biggest piece of hardware from the Division I state tournament.
The Celtics shot 635 in the 36-hole tournament that concluded Oct. 24 on Ohio State’s Gray Course to edge Uniontown Green (637) for the championship. Centerville also shot 637 but finished third based on the fifth-score tiebreaker.
It was the fifth state title in a row for Jerome, which had only the fourth-best score (322) in the second round after shooting the second-best score (313) in the opening round Oct. 23 to put itself in position to contend for the title.
Centerville was the leader after the first round with a 310, but shot a 327 in the second. Green was third (320) after the opening round and turned in the best score of the second round with a 317.
“We had a similar feeling from years past that something good was going to happen,” said Jerome junior Mariana Erana, who has been a part of the last three state titles.
Sophomore Taby Robinson led the Celtics with a 152, which also was the best score among area competitors. She finished seventh overall to make second-team all-state as Cincinnati Sycamore’s Kellen Alsip was medalist with a 147.
Also for Jerome, sophomore Abby Kiefer shot 159 (tied for 22nd) and Erana and senior Madelynn Zhang both shot 162 (tied for 30th).
Olentangy Orange shot a 319 in the second round, tying Toledo St. Ursula Academy for the second-best score of the day. The Pioneers improved on their first-round score by 13 strokes and placed fifth with a total of 651. St. Ursula Academy (641) was fourth in the 12-team event.
Orange was led by Ashley Au, who carded a 155 to tie for 13th. Also scoring for the Pioneers were Alyssa Kim (161, tied for 26th), Riley Dean (164, 35th) and Brittany Miller (171, tied for 46th).
Dublin Coffman shot a 335 in the second round — improving on its first-round score by four strokes — to move up one spot and finish ninth (674).
Jorie Hodapp led the Shamrocks with a 155 (tied for 13th), followed by Liz Kim (158, 21st) and Sabrina Slama (181, 62nd). Both Kim and Hodapp shot 77 during the final round.
Worthington Kilbourne’s Ashley Flynn carded an 82 in the final round for a total of 157 to place 20th.
Also competing individually were Olentangy’s Kara Raines (159, tied for 22nd) and Pickerington North’s Lavonca Davis (168, tied for 40th).
