Jackson Local School District Levy PASSES

well its about time someone in stark county sucked up and passed a levy to better their schools. Good stuff happening in Jackson Twp. Way to get it done.

Looking ahead, the next two years will be interesting. The current operating levy expires at the end of next year AND we'll be changing the guard at the top of the district, as the superintendent retires.

With that being said, Any levy after Cheryl is gone will most likely pass.

My friend, I have definitely heard that many times, however, I wouldn't count on that, and I offer an adjoining district as an example. In the Plain Local School District, former superintendent Jackie DeGarmo was loathed by many folks who said they wouldn't vote for a levy until she left. Well, she left over two years ago, and guess what? They STILL haven't passed a levy.

Some have said we need to hire a Jackson person for this spot, but in Ms. DeGarmo's case - that didn't help at all. She spent her entire life in the PLSD - as a student, educator and administrator.

I've also heard it said that people don't care for Haschak being nothing but a 'glorified educator' (as one person put it). They say that we need a business person to do the job. Yet I also hear some of these same people say former superintendent, Joe Larson, did a great job. What's interesting is that Joe Larson was a math teacher before being a principal before being a superintendent - virtually the same path Mrs. Haschak took. And for the record....Mr. Larson hand-picked Mrs. Haschak as his successor.

I'm not defending Cheryl Haschak, per se, but I will say that some things that you hear/think aren't necessarily entirely factual and/or will be supported later on.

I don't think she's doing a very good job. For example, I never remember the district having financial problems when Joe Larson was running the show.

And I don't ever remember hearing that JL was "double dipping" as far as his salary was concerned, as Ms. Haschak does. I think that's just wrong on so many levels, especially given our current economic situation in this country. It just seems so irresponsible and greedy of her.

First off, the state's share to the JLSD has steadily been dropping over the last two decades. Larson didn't have to worry about constantly having to ask the voters for more and more money, because our share was constantly going up as Haschak has. It's gotten especially bad in the last few years. Had Larson been in charge in the last five years - he would've had the same issue - a rapidly shrinking state revenue source.

Secondly, the JLSD suffered a whole series of levy defeats in the late 80's/early 90's on Larson's watch. The financial straits got pretty ugly then, too.

If memory serves correct, that option (double dipping) wasn't even available until about five years ago.

I'm not defending Haschak by any means, but do understand the history behind some of this. Also remember that she was hand-picked by Larson to be his successor - and I'm pretty sure he was the one who asked her to be his assistant superintendent when we didn't have an assistant prior to her position being created.

Alas, it will all be for naught, anyways. She retires in 15 months.
