Never underestimate the ability of fools to kill the golden goose.

March Madness is special because of the little guy vs big guy metric. It would also dampen the conference tournaments if there wasn't an automatic bid awaiting the winner. How many teams that have shocked the world in the first round or gone on Cinderella runs through the tournament wouldve been left out without the auto bid at the expense of a mediocre major college. No one is excited to watch a 500 Big Ten team play a 500 SEC, Big 12, ACC, Big East team. Michigan St has been in the tournament for 26 straight years, allowing mid major auto qualifiers hasn't hurt them. And before the argument is made regarding a mediocre small school getting hot and winning the auto bid, would NC St be here without the auto bid? Not only did they get to experience the dance they won their first game.

As an OSU fan i have no problem with them being in the NIT rather than taking a small schools spot, they didnt do enough to earn the opportunity.

The automatic bids to smaller leagues should remain, for all the popular reasons...but where some of these leagues miss the mark is by sending their conference tourney winner, who might not be their best team. Taking the MAC, for example, I get that the MAC tourney is a fun event and makes money, but if the regular season league champ gets upset in the conference tourney the MAC team that makes the NCAA tourney probably gets wiped out and the MAC remains a one bid league. Some of these smaller leagues should not have a league tourney and simply send their very best team...the regular season champ. Win a game a few years a row in the tourney and your league might be looked at more favorably down the road as maybe a multiple bid league.

This isn't football, there is plenty of room for small schools.
