Elder Wrestling 2019-2020

Assuming the schedule is correct, since all 14 Panthers are still alive in the championship bracket, they are finished for the night. Here are tomorrow's Championship Semifinal pairings (9:00 a.m.):
106: Magnuss vs Andrew Kenny (Walnut Hills)
113: Doepker vs Payton Abbott (Harrison)
120: Roth vs Dustin Norris (LaSalle)
126: Collins vs Austin Sodemann (Northwest)
132: Kaimann vs Dzhambulat Zam Tckhovrebov (Kings)
138: Williams vs Mason Kleinberg (Springboro)
145: Lambers vs Andrew Aquilia (Turpin)
152: Thomas vs Conner Sands (LaSalle)
160: Barrett vs Bobby Green (Northwest)
170: Weber vs Chase Stein (LaSalle)
182: Klayman vs Dillon Walker (LaSalle)
195: Tucker vs Jacob Kowalski (Springboro)
220: Mitchell vs Terell Wills (Oxford Talawanda)
285: Tolbert vs Nathan Detherage (Oxford Talawanda)

Does anyone know how La Salle was able to enter 9 wrestlers after having to withdraw from the state duals tournament and only having 2 or 3 for GCL. Were some of their injured guys waiting for the individual tournament?
State Duals are separate from individual State tournament. Some teams elect to not compete in the state duals tournament. Mentioned this before , they had injuries, disciplinary reasons and so on. There are 14 Elder wrestlers, good luck to these guys ! Go Panthers

The entry grid for the Lakota East sectional shows that the Panthers, Harrison, and Springboro will be entering full squads. The seed nomination list includes the following 11 Panthers: Magness (106, #2), Doepker (113, #1), Roth (120, #2), Collins (126, #2) Kaimann (132, #3), Lambers (145, #1), Thomas (152, #3), Barrett (160, #3), Klayman (182, #4), Tucker (195, #4), and Tolbert (285, #2).
Weigh-ins start at 4:00, with the action starting at 5:00. Hopefully everyone makes weight and passes skin check.
Best of luck to the Panthers!

A tight team race between our purple and white Panthers and the blue and white Panthers of Springboro, with five head-to-heads in the championship finals and one in a third place match: it's gonna be a barn burner of a finish!

The original schedule has matches resuming at 1:00, but I suspect things will get rolling before then. Stay tuned.

Is Collins over Skinner an upset?

Huge props to the Panther grapplers as they won the Lakota East sectional over second place Springboro, 252.5 to 240.5. The Panthers had five champions: Magness (106), Doepker (113), Collins (126), Lambers (145), and Thomas (152). Kaimann (132) and Tolbert (285) finished second; Roth (120), Barrett (160), and Tucker (195) finished third; and Williams (138), Weber (170), Klayman (182), and Mitchell finished (220) finished fourth. All 14 will be going to Kettering next week.
Great job, Panthers!

Congratulations to All the Panthers advancing to Districts! Keep working hard! POTP Thanks for the updates and your dedication to Elder Wrestling!!

I believe the OHSAA normally posts the district meet brackets sometime Saturday night or Sunday morning. There was a water main break at Centerville High School this morning, and they had to postpone the second day of wrestling until tomorrow. Their original schedule for the second day had the finals starting at 6:00 p.m. A message on baumspage doesn't state whether they will be following the original schedule or have found ways to speed things up. In any case, we can look for the Kettering district brackets to be released much later than usual, maybe tomorrow night.

Here are the opening pairings for the Panthers at Kettering Fairmont on Friday:

Championship Round 1
106: Magness vs Andrew Gibson (Lakota East)
113: Doepker vs Josh Cunningham (Springfield)
120: Roth vs Jake Cotsonas (Loveland)
(Previous h2h: Roth lost dec 6-0, SWOWCA)
126: Collins vs Isaac Bell (Sydney)
132: Kaimann vs Jake Ransbottom (West Clermont)
138: Williams vs Alex Epstein (Lakota East)
145: Lambers vs Derek Elliott (Milford)
152: Thomas vs Ian Baird (Beavercreek)
160: Barrett vs Kurt Thompson (Moeller)
170: Weber vs Wyatt Ferguson (Oak Hills)
(Previous h2h: Weber lost pin, Elder-Oak Hills dual)
182: Klayman vs Evan McHugh (Anderson)
195: Tucker vs Justice McFadden (Springfield)
220: Mitchell vs Ace Ehrenschwender (Colerain)
285: Tolbert vs Justin Knipper (Beavercreek)
(Previous h2h: Tolbert lost pin, SWOWCA)

Sectional notes
Although I root for all the Panthers grapplers (and Panther teams), it was hard for me not to root just a smidge more for Doepker and Barrett. Doepker won 113 and Barrett was third at 160.
Danimal Dan is correct, before Saturday Collins had not wrestled Cole Skinner in a varsity match. Skinner placed third last year at 106 and was ranked fourth at 126 in D-I by one yappi seer (Collins was not ranked in the top ten). Collins’ win was a big upset as he won 126.
For the sectional, three Panthers – Lambers, Thomas, and Tucker – dropped down a weight from the weight each had been wrestling the latter part of the year. Lambers started the year wrestling at 160 before dropping down to 152 at the CIT and all subsequent matches. That is, until the GCL-S meet when he took a forfeit at 145 against LaSalle (he won at 152 against X in the finals). The nugget of Lambers at 145 was noticed by one eagle-eyed yappi poster in the wrestling forum the next day. Thomas started the year wrestling mainly at 170. He then dropped down to 160 starting at the CIT and stayed there until the GCL-S meet, when he wrestled 152 against LaSalle’s Conner Sands and beat him 4-2 in OT. (Thomas won at 160 against X in the finals.) By my records, Tucker had wrestled 220 all season. We’ll see this weekend whether the decision to drop down a weight pays off for each of them, but so far, so good.
When Tucker dropped down to 195, that left 220 open, and junior Gaillin Mitchell took advantage of the opportunity. His only previous varsity match this year was at the Western Brown dual, where he won by pin at 285.

From the ElderHS Instagram account.

Congratulations to Coach McCoy on his retirement. Thank you Coach for all you did for Elder HS and the wrestling program. You made a huge impact in many young men's lives. Thank you and all the best! Altoria!

We bid a sad farewell to Dick McCoy as he officially retires Friday, February 28th. Dick first came to Elder High School as the Head Wrestling Coach in the fall of 1982. During his tenure, Elder was GCL Champions 6 times, Sectional Champions 14 times, and District Champions 4 times. Dick coached 3 individual state champions and 30 individual state placers. Because of his record, Dick was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame, the Southwest Ohio Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and the Western Hills High School Hall of Fame.
But it was never just about winning for Dick. He was an amazing influence on the student-athletes he coached. He recognized and appreciated what each kid brought to the team. He taught more than wrestling (and soccer at Elder, as well); he taught the boys to work hard, be determined, be organized, and never underestimate what they could bring to their team. And although a West High graduate, Dick mentored the boys to become good men and leaders and strive for Altiora – in other words, Men of Elder.
Dick retired as Head Wrestling Coach after the 2013 season and became the first Panther Athletic Complex Facilities Manager. The PAC has been a source of pride for the Elder Community, offering a state of the art sports complex, and Dick was extremely instrumental in helping to maintain the complex.
Although we are saddened by Dick’s departure, we are excited for him to now have more time to spend with his wife, Connie, his three children, Todd (Nikki), Erin (Doug), and Brad (Jen), and his many grandchildren.
Dick’s positive outlook and upbeat personality will not be forgotten. He was a blessing to us all, and we will truly miss him. Thank you, Dick, for all you have done for the students, faculty, staff, parents, and the whole Elder Community! You are truly one of the best! #elderhighschool #altiora #thankyou

District Prospects from my limited point of view. I hope every Elder kid entered wins his bracket, but since this is unlikely, let's look at what we might expect to happen starting Friday at 4:00pm in Kettering...

106 - Magness has a great draw for winning his first two matches to meet Mitchell from Oak Hills in the semi-final. He beat him in Coaches Classic but many in the state seem to like Mitchell. I expect Magness to advance to the final and drop that to the projected State Champ Pacey N from Mason.
113 - Willie looked rested and sharp at Sectionals, but Districts is grueling. Hopefully his injury stays healed and he can go at "full on Willie." He'll meet Damion Ryan Centerville in the semis, a kid he beat at Coaches in OT. So that really is the final on this bracket, winner wins the final. I'll take Willie.
120 - Pretty loaded weight class with lots of competitive kids. Jack faces a tough Loveland boy with 36 wins first, if he gets past him, talented Oak Hills frosh awaits. I'm thinking Jack goes 2-2 and DNP.
126- at least 5 different guys have a good shot at winning this weight and Jack Collins is one of them, but not the favorite. He should advance to the semi to face Matt Verdes Butler senior who is very tough, but beatable. More difficult would be knocking off Antoine Allen Princeton. Jack is runner up.
132 - Kody looked really good at sectionals and should win his opening bout. Next he'll likely fall to stud from Princeton Dawson who I think wins the bracket. Kody needs to wrestle back beating likely Tecumseh senior Rodgers to advance. Next he would get rematch with Kings wrestler he beat or Adams from Fairfield. He is capable of winning both, so if he does he might meet Brayden Zenni from Moeller who will drop from semi. 5th is likely.
138 - Aiden had a great season. District Qualifier and great contributor, but he is most likely DNP.
145 - Seth dropping to 145 opens the door to the final where if all goes well, he meets Austin Mullins Wayne, a beast who only has 15 matches this year. He'll have to clear a scrambling roller from Colerain named Tim Smith as well as McKenzie from Moeller who is a gamer. Tough road, but he gets there.
152 - Bartley has a packed bracket to deal with starting with likely semi-final opponent, Andrew Knick, senior at 46-2 and likely winner of bracket. If this happens, he drops down to meet either Avery Bair or Jestin Love, both very good seniors. Probably finishes as state alternate, but he might surprise me and others. I hope the sophomore makes it to State because someday I see him on the podium.
160 - No easy road ahead for Pat Barrett starting with his first bout vs. Thompson from Moe, the lanky and difficult in one package. He will have to deliver an exceptional day to wrestle back for a chance at a "go to" match. Possible, but more likely DNP.
170 - Joe was a great contributor all year and achieves District Qualifier status, way to go kid. Nevan Snodgrass will win this bracket easily.
182 - Its always really hard to advance when you start with your foot in a hole as a 4th place at sectionals. Montana will give it all he has and score some points, but end up DNP.
195 - Jack Tucker might surprise some people this weekend if he believes in himself. I think Kowalski from Springboro is your champ here.
220 - Great experience for Mitchell to learn from for next year, but DNP.
285 - Rowan faces Knipper to start and it doesn't get any easier from there. A stack of kids ranked ahead of you at State makes it hard, but anything can happen at this weight and Rowan is capable of beating anyone in the bracket except Padilla who I think wins State Title again.

Elder could see 4 finalists and get at least one District Champion. I think 5 will qualify and we'll have an alternate or maybe two. A very good year all around leading up to the big shows. Congratulations to what is a fabulous TEAM and certainly the best in SW Ohio as a team. Thanks. My opinions are just that and mean nothing to the outcomes.

Congrats to Seth Lambers getting career win 100. As far as the rankings , they only take 4 from each District! If you look at rankings they have some kids ranked top 8 and finishing district at 5/6th place! Ideally the goal is 1-3 finish this weekend to have a shot to place top 8 at state ! Finishing 4th can make a mountainside climb to have a chance to place! However anything is possible! There will be district champions that lose to a 4th place district placer . Happens every year! Willy’s weight at Perry district is loaded ! Some other districts are not that loaded and each weight has some long shot that will make some noise! Injuries play a significant roll this time of year ! Weight cutting and the grind ! At this point it’s 90% mental! I wish all the boys all the luck for this weekend ! Sometimes the wrestler with the biggest heart wins over the others ! Go Panthers!

Who are the "many" who like Mitchell over Magness? I saw Boro predicted Mitchell, but who else are you referencing? They split the two matches with Magness pinning Mitchell at SWOWCA and dropping a 7-5 decision at Oak Hills in their dual. Time will tell, but I like our guys chances to make it to the final against Pacey like you predicted. Question is, if that happens, what the difference in the seed between a second place district finish and a third place finish at State?

4:09 Baumspage has a "Bracket Corrections" page for Kettering; among others, it appears that top-ranked Pacey Najdusak of Mason (106) is not wrestling. For not only him but all in all divisions who thought they would be wrestling today but aren't, you have to feel badly for them, that is a sad situation.

6:13 (1) Springboro 32.0 (2) LaSalle 22.5 (3) Beavercreek 22.0 (4) Butler 19.5 (5) Elder 19.0 (6) Centerville/Lakota East 18.0
