Cheerleaders

Back in my day, student sections, pep rallies and cheerleaders were synonomous with Football. After attending Hoover's games these past few years I am truly disappointed with what I see. The cheerleaders do very little to get the fans cheering. The football players start cheers for themselves on the sidelines and I have noticed that fans in the stands start cheers "H-O-O-V-E-R" that seem to get more of the adult fans involved. Oh yeah...I can't forget the "whistler." Am I wrong in thinking that CHEERLEADERS are supposed to LEAD the CHEERS? Boy have times changed. I guess cheerleading isn't as popular as it was way back when.
A few years ago, there were a group of kids that attended many events and they did a better job of cheerleading than the cheerleaders did.

I certainly don't want to offend anyone, but if you're gonna be a cheerleader put your money where your mouth is.

What ever happened to Pep Rallies???? Again, during my day that was the responsibility of the cheerleaders and spirit committee. Does Hoover not have one?

Good Luck Vikes. Beat Fitch! GO H-O-O-V-E-R!

I totally agree about the cheerleaders. For some reason, in the past two years especially, they have been very disappointing. During the Boardman game last year, they started a DEFENSE cheer when Hoover was on offense! Is there a lack of knowledge of what is going on in the game? They also don't seem to understand the proper times to begin cheers. I look over at them many times when there is a crucial 3rd down stop needed by the Viking defense and the cheerleaders are just standing there with their pom-poms behind their back. The H-O-O-V-E-R cheers are almost non existant. They should be doing these throughout the whole game. I think one of the problems is that the cheerleaders are not "into" the game. They are just into being cheerleaders. I love to scream and yell because I want a win! If the cheerleaders wanted a win as bad as I do maybe that would help. I often see cheerleaders from other teams really get into the game and not just cheering. Also, the cheerleaders used to move around a lot more. They rarely come over to my section any more at all and i'm right next to the band. I hope someone connected to the cheerleaders is reading this. I assure you that this is not only my opinion. Many people in the stands are completely baffled by the lack of cheering and innovative cheers. I have to say that they are doing a better job than last year (at least they are doing back flips again after touchdowns). The student section was very good a few years back during their undefeated season. We don't seem to get much support from students, especially at away games. The Hoover crowd is still awsome and will always be. I think we are the best fans in HS football.

Thanks bb1100!
A lot of Hoover fans need to read this, and get off there hands ( i mean sitting on them ) and start cheering for the team, not just the band!!! " GO VIKES "

Something I've seen at college games might get the crowd into it a little more. They send band members or cheerleaders into the stands at key times to play the fight song or do a certain cheer. Plus, the fans would get to see some kids up close.

Cheerleaders haven't led cheers for years. Why...because the fans don't cheer back with them. It's not just a Hoover thing.
But at Hoover, the crowd is not good at cheering. The students are mostly behind the grandstand visiting and the adults don't get loud.
I was at both the Hoover and Perry games vs McK at Fawcett. While the Perry fans ignored the cheerleaders as much as Hoover's (they're stuck staying in their spot near the 20),the Perry fans were much much louder than Hoover's. McK's fans were louder than both put together.

I wonder why it is that Hoover home crowds are so much better than Hoover away crowds. Does anyone have any thoughts?

anyone who knows me knows i do my part...it is frustrating at times attempting to fire up the crowd with little response...definatly not like it used to be....ill stay loud and proud and cheer the Vikings on to victory!!! to the fans who respond to the cheers and realize their hands are for clapping and not for use as a cushion it is appreciated by the players and the more boisterous among us :thumb:

I think part of the problem is that some people have a bad taste in their mouth from the loss to Wadsworth and then the 1-9 season. It may be that some are not "sold" on the fact that we have a good team again. We fans really need to "bring it" in the next 3 games, especially the next two home games.

Having watched the so called cheerleaders the last couple of years I finally have come to the conclusion that they should be renamed the gymnastics team. It seems all they want to do is go up and down the sidelines and or basketball court doing flips cartwheels and other gymnastic moves. They don't have a clue as to weather they at a football, baseball, basketball or ping pong match or games.

Another thing that has bothered me a bit is that they go do that stupid Freshman / Sophomor / Junior / Senior cheer thing in the student section at the worst times. If we are blowing someone out of the water, then by all means, go do your student cheers, but if it's close and we need to get the defense fired up or need to score a TD, then get cheering! Again, I think this shows a lack of knowledge of the game. By the way, I realize that cheerleaders don't really lead cheers anymore, but I do believe that they ad to the overall atmosphere of a game and do get the crowd fired up. They have been great in the past, but something has really changed in the past 2 years. Did they get a new coach?

Maybe they need to get the PA involved. At Ohio State, every time the opposing team has a third down, they ring the ACDC bell. It's like a signal to the fans to make some noise.

I have been very disappointed recently with the Hoover crowds both home and away. It seems like when its a close game then the crowds cheer, but it seems like when we are leading big or are losing there is very tepid clapping. As a former player I can say that there is nothing more that gets you fired up then hearing the crowd cheer and go crazy. I do not totally blame the cheerleadrs and I still love the H-O-O-V-E-R cheer but they should have the crowd chant D-Fense, D-Fense when we need a stop or GO-GO-GO when we are moving the ball on Offense.

Lets make and NC an intimidating place to play at again, and also when we are visitors let it be known to the opposing team and fans that we are LOUD and PROUD of our VIKINGS - LETS GO HOOVER!!!

Cheerleaders have a lack of knowledge of when to cheer and what cheers to do. The last couple of years each senior class has taken it into their own hands by leading cheers, painting up, and getting people excited for the games. Also the adults need to get into it more, all it takes is a couple of people to start clapping and yelling to get others into it. Hoover fans are not even close to being the best fans. We are all bandwagoners and show up and yell when times are good and whine and cry when times are bad. There were soo many times when i was at the Hoover/Lake game that i just wanted to yell, and tried standing up and clapping and yelling to get some others into it, but didnt succeed. As a challenge i think that the Hoover fans young and old need to start getting behind and supporting your team.

Hoovers student section consists of mainly Juniors and Seniors. Just about ALL of the freshman and sophmores walk around behind the grandstand and talk to there friends as if they didn't just see them earlier in the day. It's the people standing in the front row who get the cheers started. The cheerleaders and other fans don't do anything.

I agree to many under classmen don't even know the score!
I've had students ask me on the way out, who won, so they can tell there mom and dad when they pick them up, so they think they watched the game. ( the middle school is the worst for running around!! )

I think it would help if the cheerleaders would stay down in front of the student's and the band, and then go up and cheer in front of the covered stands once in a while ! ( Most older fans don't care how many back flips they do )

Don't wait for the cheerleaders to stand in front of your section and lead you in cheers....if you think it's time to yell D-Fense...just do it...
