Where this would be the easy assumption, Elder and X will be playing the night before the Elite. You have to think this will have some affect on how both teams perform. Also, with the uncertainty of Moeller's starting setter, that could play another big role..I can’t see Darby having much success at this one. Think we’re likely looking at an all GCL final
In that case, I could definitely see Centerville and/or Iggy in the final. Think Northmont and Olentangy are a step below that top tier, while Darby is below those two. Whoever loses between Elder and X could be in for a tough Saturday after what will undoubtedly be a draining Friday. For one, I doubt Walnut was asked just from a tradition point of view, and although they were more of a known quantity in the Cincinnati area, around the state less so (as evidenced by the early polls not having them in the top 10). So, Centerville may not have realized they'd be back and as strong as they are after losing players to graduation.I think they have always had at least one representative from every region. So you would either remove Darby (Been a participant almost every year), Northmont, or Liberty.
Also, with Walnut getting a new coach this year, the scheduling could have fallen on the AD who wouldn't have known the prestige of the Elite and turned it down. That is all speculation on my part though, who knows if Walnut was even asked. It will still be a very competitive weekend of volleyball
Well said. They should definitely be playing a top-tier schedule this year, but I'm not sure when the new coach was hired so maybe he didn't have time? Or didn't know the process? I guess they can't do much with their conference, although Loveland isn't bad. But outside of the GCL and Sycamore, they're not doing much to challenge themselves. Would've been nice to see Centerville, Beavercreek, Badin, Carroll, CJ, etc. on the schedule at least. For one, I doubt Walnut was asked just from a tradition point of view, and although they were more of a known quantity in the Cincinnati area, around the state less so (as evidenced by the early polls not having them in the top 10). Two, by looking at their schedule (or lack thereof) the scheduling was not handled well as they don't have many matches (could be the new coach, could be the AD, could be both), and in between the X and Elder matches they don't have much of a challenge. The GCL teams always look to challenge themselves to prepare for the tournament run.
All that to say, I wish Walnut was playing this weekend as well. Would be good to see them against some other good teams. Until they play Elder, it's hard to pin them down.
The winner of this tournament, doesn't typically fair as well in the State Tournament, historically. What’s the history/correlation with this tournament’s champion and the state champion? I thought someone posted last year.
Agreed. Would be nice to see a tougher schedule. Also, I was at the Moeller quad beginning of the year. Walnut lost to Louisville St X (1-3 I think) but beat Fishers (3-1 I think). So the only in-state loss is Moeller, and both of their losses came the same day. And I think they could have beaten Louisville St X with their middles. Possibly Moeller as well.Well said. Also, their schedule on the OHSBVA website is definitely not complete, as they're missing 2 matches from the Moeller quad at the beginning of the year. I believe their record might be 7-3? Think they lost all 3 at that quad and have wins against Milford and Loveland that aren't yet recorded on the site, but haven't dropped a match since that quad (with their middles actually playing now; Welden has been nice on offense and Moyer puts up a very strong block).
Got it. Not sure why I thought they lost all 3 at that quad. Totally agree that they could’ve beaten those teams with their middles. They may have lost to Moe in 3, but, from what I recall, it was a very tight 3. Love to see a public school challenging the status quo.Agreed. Would be nice to see a tougher schedule. The current seniors were sophomores in 2020, juniors were freshman. And every school lost that year, so I'm confused on what you're trying to say I guess. This is when the COVID lost season is starting to show. Losing an entire year creates for a shake up across the board. If any year was the one where Walnut takes a step, this would be it. Or even next year if they get their studs seasoned.
